Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 1,345 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers frequently experienced severe frustration due to unexpected extra charges, hidden booking fees, and steep financial penalties levied for minor or pre-existing vehicle damage upon returning cars. Reviewers also reported feeling heavily pressured by aggressive counter staff into purchasing expensive, mandatory-sounding additional insurance policies and extra services. Conversely, a small portion of people felt that the vehicle collection process was remarkably quick, smooth, and efficient overall. Some reviewers were happy with certain staff members who proved to be particularly accommodating, polite, and genuinely helpful throughout their entire rental visit.

Do not use this company!

They are totally unreliable and untrustworthy. They still owe me £2000 for my deposit payment which they have not refunded 50 days after the end of the car hire. This is the Menorca branch but their customer service seems equally poor. They acknowledge receipt of emails then do NOTHING. Phoning is no better.
There are plenty of other options available. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.

Will never use Goldcar again

Will never use Goldcar again. Told at the desk I couldn’t take the car without taking out their insurance cover or leaving a deposit of 2300 for 44 days. Do not use this company.

Avoid Goldcar if you’re wise

Avoid Goldcar if you’re wise! High pressure sales and upgrades at the desk in Alicante airport. Gave me a car with 77000km and loads of scratches on it. Car went fine but on return the car was inspected and found to have a minor dirty scrape mark on it, inside the boot lid and after i challenged the rep and wiped it mostly away with my finger nail, he said he would remove the damage and was quite rude. When I got home I received a bill from goldcar for 154 euros to repair the scrape which I did not cause.
I have challenged Goldcar and i am still awaiting a reply about my refund.
Avoid if you can!!

Horrendous

Horrendous experience with all 3 of the agents I dealt with at Goldcar (1 at drop off, 2 at collection).

Booked through a comparison site and paid extra for Full damage insurance and theft. When collecting the car the agent dismissed my insurance as it wasn't anything to do with Goldcar and I had to pay €114 for insurance or €1400 deposit with €3500 excess for any damage... This is exactly what I was trying to avoid by purchasing the added insurance upfront. But no empathy from the agent or calm explanation/advice...

The agent was horrendous from that point on... arrogant, patronising and incredibly rude. "Pay the insurance fee to Goldcar, or don't get the car", and then sarcastically saying "sign the contract, I'm presuming you do know what a contract is?!" when at the 3sign stage were just a couple of his lovely quotes that stayed with me. When I questioned the fuel deposit fee he then went on to tell me that all rental companies require this, when I told him that I got a car from the Thrifty desk opposite just 3 weeks ago and they didn't... His response was "well, go over to Thrifty now and get your car".

The drop off was just as bad... Got caught in a car park in Málaga as 2 vehicles had collided near the exit, so we got delayed and were just over an hour late and obviously stressing about catching the plane... The first thing the agent said to me when I asked them to double check the car was "senor, you're late"... Obviously more interested in getting their fee of €40 for being an hour late, than appreciating our predicament and showing understanding. DO NOT GO NEAR THIS COMPANY... don't even be tempted if their offers are too good to be true; it's because they are.

I booked and paid for a rental car…

I booked and paid for a rental car online in advance. However, when I arrived in Barcelona to collect the vehicle, I was told that there was a one-letter difference in my surname because I had accidentally entered an “e” instead of an “a.”

Despite having valid identification and proof of payment, the company refused to provide me with the car. I was also unable to get my money back at the time, which left me extremely frustrated after travelling to Barcelona specifically to collect the vehicle.

The situation became even more unpleasant when the police were called because I stated that I was not prepared to leave without receiving a refund.

What was particularly concerning was that three other customers were experiencing the same or a very similar problem at the same time.

Based on my experience, I strongly recommend being extremely careful before booking with this company. I personally lost money and had a very stressful experience. Please check the company's terms and reputation carefully before making any payment.
( don't hand your money to scammer)

I'm afraid it's the same old story

I'm afraid it's the same old story. A mysterious scratch on the drivers door handle that had not been present prior to drop off was found and charged for. Trying to contact customer service to get a proper invoice for the excess insurance absolutely impossible. I should have checked Trustpilot before I booked.

Car was battered. The lady at the collection desk is very rude. We paid in full and received our money back £85 less than we paid and the blamed exchange rates. Please please avoid this company

Avoid Goldcar – if I could give 0 stars, I would!

My experience with Goldcar in Alicante has been absolutely terrible, and I strongly advise others to think very carefully before renting a car from this company.

From the moment we collected the car, there was a very strong push to sell us additional insurance costing a significant amount of extra money. I found the sales approach aggressive and uncomfortable, especially as we had already considered our insurance situation.

The worst part, however, came after returning the car.

Goldcar charged me €618.83 for four alleged damages plus an administration fee.

The problem is that Goldcar’s own CHECK-OUT report from the beginning of the rental already lists the exact same four areas of damage that I was later charged for:

Front Right Wing
Front Right Door
Right Mirror Housing
Front Right Wheel Rim Damage

The same damage is also listed on the CHECK-IN report when the car was returned.

I therefore submitted a formal written complaint and disputed the charge. Goldcar confirmed on 27 August 2026 that they had received my complaint and registered it under a reference number.

Despite this, Goldcar later went ahead and charged €618.83 to my Mastercard while my complaint was still being reviewed.

I find this completely unacceptable.

When a rental company’s own documentation shows that the damage was already recorded at the beginning of the rental, I simply cannot understand how the customer can later be charged for exactly those same damages.

In my opinion, this experience feels like a scam. Charging a customer for damage that the company’s own documentation already records at the start of the rental is, in my view, deeply misleading and completely unacceptable.

I believe practices like this deserve serious scrutiny from consumer protection authorities. Customers should not have to fight to recover money for damage that the rental company’s own records indicate was already present.

I have now had to escalate the matter through my bank and formally dispute the card transaction.

Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Goldcar under any circumstances. My rental involved:

aggressive attempts to sell expensive extra insurance.
a damage claim that, in my view, is contradicted by Goldcar’s own documentation.
poor handling of my complaint.
a €618.83 card charge despite my written dispute already being open.

My advice to other customers: stay away from Goldcar. If you do rent from them, photograph the entire vehicle, keep every document, check the CHECK-OUT report in detail, and monitor your card carefully after the rental.

I will never rent from Goldcar again. If I could give 0 stars, I would.

Don't use - pay the extra for a company with a reputation.

When arriving at the booking desk the staff were rude and condescending - borderline threatening - when I mentioned I had xcover and didn't need their cover. They spoke to me as if I didn't understand how car insurance worked and I was practically thrown my Passport and license back.

Booked a Ford Kuga, was given a battered SsangYong Tivoli 1.5 which is much smaller - struggled to fit four people and luggage in this car where we wouldn't have if we'd had the vehicle we booked. Was told that it was in the same category and 'nothing we can do'.

It's been 10 days and the hold on my account for over £1500 has still not been released.

Will never book with Goldcar again.

Goldcar - KINSEN - Athens Airport - Worst Rental Experience

I want to mention from the start that this not refers to all Goldcar agencies. It is STRICTLY RELATED to the one in Athens Airport, operated by the Greek KINSEN company.

What went wrong this time?

We've booked online the car (Renault Clio or similar) with Super Relax Cover, which stated there won't be any excess deposit retained for the rental (excepting the fuel deposit).
We arrived in the Goldcar office, on August 26th, afternoon, 37-38 Celsius degrees outside, an impatient 7 years old child with us.

We've been approached by Ioannis Malliarakis. After he started our check-in procedure, he stayed more than 15 minutes on the phone with somebody else.
I've asked him to put away the phone while he's doing our paperwork. A second call was taken by him... another waiting.

Then we've been given a Skoda Fabia 1.2L. Seeing there's at least one Renault Clio on their parking lot, I've asked about this and I was told that THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE RENAULT CLIO on their fleet, although is advertised so.

Then, he insisted that we have to be retained a deposit, as our already bought inssurance doesn't cover this and he proposed us another additional inssurance on top of ours (extra 30 EUR) in order not to be retained the deposit.

I've explained him that the inssurance he proposed has the Premium Road Assistance as extra feature, but our inssurance has no deposit condition.

He refused it so, given the waiting time, the impatient child, the heat we agreed to pay the extra 30 EUR. But this was a THEFT.

We've also booked for a Child Safety Seat 15-36 Kg (15-36 kg / BoosterSeat), but when receiving the car we've been given a smaller seat that wasn't right for our child.

When asking the employee to replace this with a suitable one, he insisted that that was what we booked, but for a 20-25 EUR TIP he would change it for us.

I had to open my booking confirmation and show it to him in order for him to replace the chair.

Then, the car.... was the lousiest ever rented car... a very very weak motor.... I had to drive all the uphill roads in either 2nd or 3rd gear.

Last, but not least, on both check-in and check-out procedures, the employees wouldn't show us the forms content that we were supposed to sign. When returning the car I had to ask and EXPLAIN WHY I need to see what I was supposed to sign for.

I am underlining that, we've rented cars from Goldcar in Italy and Spain, several times and had good experiences. This is just KINSEN operated local office from Athens Airport.

Hidden cost when initially booked

Hidden cost when initially booked. It was not clear they didn’t accept third party insurance and I had to pay double insurance at a much higher cost. They would not let me take the car unless I either paid the premium or left an outrageous amount for a deposit!
No transparency! You’d rather go to the most reliable : Europcar and Hertz!
Never again!

Avoid at all costs

Poor experience at pick up waiting in line for an hour despite a fair few number of staff being available and chatting to each other.
Tried to upsell insurance, added a fuel surcharge, which we where not expecting, still waiting for it to be refunded, despite being back nearly a month and multiple e mails to the company.
Return process efficient and painless.

The worst experience I ever had with a…

The worst experience I ever had with a company, one big scam. I booked a car 2 times because the first time they refused to give us the car unsless we booked a very expensive extra insurance. Then I booked again, this time with the exact same name as my creditcard (this was the issue first time), and then they refused again because my initials were on my creditcard in stead of my full name. Totally absurd. And again, if we paid for the expensive extra insurance, they didn't care anymore about the correct names. What a scam, i lost the money of 2 bookings.

Terrible

Terrible. Made to take out additional insurance at the last minute because the excess would be €2000 and only advised atbpoint of collection.
Car was damaged at point of collection also. Notified member of staff and they didnt record the damage.
At drop off i checked the car with staff who confirmed all was ok. Then received a bill for £500 3 dys later. I contested the charge and they simply charged my bank. AVOID GOLDCAR

Conned into paying more money on arrival

Big upselling on insurance . I said I had bought some but they denied it, they didn’t even ask if we booked through a third party as that might not come up on their system, which I didn’t realise I did as I added it on checkout when hiring the car online. So we had to pay almost £300 more on pick up, thinking we were mistaken. Then refused to give a refund once I found the proper documentation showing I had already payed insurance for the car.

Avoid- unexplained additional charges, no explanation

Wish I had read the other reviews and avoided this company

Rented from Goldcar via DoYouSpain, pickup Almeria Airport, return Seville Airport 17.08.26. At pickup we were charged £1,294 as a deposit plus additional charges, no credit card was available so this went on debit. £736 was later refunded with no explanation, receipt, or notification — leaving £558 unaccounted for.

I emailed Goldcar directly asking for an itemised breakdown and evidence for the deduction, with a 14-day deadline. They acknowledged the request (ref 27248354) and said they needed more time to gather documentation. Several weeks on, still nothing — no breakdown, no receipt, no response.

I've now had to raise a formal chargeback with my bank. Would strongly recommend paying by credit card if you rent with Goldcar, and photographing the vehicle and any documents at pickup and drop-off, since none was provided to us. But honestly I would avoid this company all together- it looks like we're far from the only people to experience this

Great service

Although I’ve seen quite a few negative reviews about Goldcar, my own experience has been very different. I’ve used them several times and have never had any problems. The staff have always been friendly, helpful and professional.

A special mention goes to Eugenia, who works in the returns area. She was incredibly kind, positive and welcoming, and really stood out because of her great attitude.

Based on my personal experience, I’ve always been happy with the service from Goldcar.
