Not fit for purpose

Well, rather suprisingly, from reading the general reviews - and as a person with a technical print background - who was attempting to liaise with this business on a simple novel in a hardback format, the result was unworkable. The two people I communicated with were simply not able to understand the basic printing processes. They may well be able to help if you want the simplest book ... say a 200pp B&W novel with a perfect bound cover, but I urge you to consider other printers for anything more complex. Their final quote was £4,496 for 30 copies. Ridiculous.

I have just received my first order…

I have just received my first order from ExWhyZed, which is an A6-sized photo booklet in landscape format. The print quality is excellent for a digital print and I found the customer service outstanding. The staff went beyond my expectations to ensure the final product was perfect. I can highly recommend this company to all photographers with regards to quality, price, speed and customer service.

Brilliant - The Printers I Needed!

Brilliant! Thank goodness for Ex Why Zed! I needed an urgent print run of my book so that I could take them to a conference in Ibiza. Mike got them printed for me in excellent time, got them to the depot and then sent a car in to pick them up and get them to me to make sure I got them on time!

The quality of the print is fantastic and they made a real difference to my launch. We're now exploring printing some hard backs with them too.

Fantastic experience for short run of postcards for personal project

I worked with Mike and Harriet on a short run of postcards for a personal project, and the experience was fantastic from start to finish. The postcards were ready in under a week and the quality was outstanding, far better than samples I’d tried with other printers. Mike and Harriet were also incredibly helpful in guiding me (as someone with limited printing knowledge) through paper choices, colours, bleed dimensions, and more. They were quick to respond to emails about dispatch and delivery, and to top it off, the price was significantly lower than two other printers I had contacted. Excellent service, superb quality, and great value; very highly recommended.

Made my dream project happen

I truly believe that this company is one of a kind. They support you with advice along the way to help you not make mistakes, double-check before printing, send you samples. They support you as an artist — by simply having amazing pricing and quality. I'd say, I quite literally am surprised places like this exist, but it definitely makes me super happy.

I printed an A5 zine with them a year ago, and I'm coming back to do a hard cover book this year.

Thank you for being so awesome, I'd give you a thousand stars if I could!

The fact that you are always available…

The fact that you are always available and eager to help answer all of our questions was really nice, especially when it's the first time you print something. Also, I really appreciated the quality of the final product and it's quick reliable delivery ! Thank you so much for helping me finalize my project !

Ex Why Zed - Ex Don't Bother

I got a quote from Ex Why Zed in 2022 for some folded flyers to be used as poster magazines. When I went to order them, I was told the quote was incorrect and it should be more expensive but as a goodwill gesture, they agreed to print at the original quoted price. The goods arrived (delivered to where I worked at the time) and they were great. That's where the positive experience ends.

A year later, I emailed Ex Why Zed for another quote, accepted it and sent off the artwork. Ex Why Zed sent the invoice which I paid and waited for the poster magazines to be printed. One morning I got an email saying the poster magazines were printed and ready to fold but they were checking how I wanted them to be folded. I replied back with the instructions. Two days later, I emailed to ask if they needed my delivery address as I'd not been asked. "Mike" said the order was delivered that morning. I explained that was strange as I was in that morning and nothing arrived to queried the delivery address. Mike said they were sent to the address I gave them a year before - my old work address that I hadn't worked at for over 8 months. Mike's response was, "Ok. It would have been handy to know that. We had printed the job before so it's not an unreasonable decision to send them to the same address given that no new address was supplied?"
Given the first order went smoothly, I overlooked the delivery issue and had a former colleague bring them home with him for me to collect.
When I went through the magazines, I noticed that around 10% of the poster magazines had been torn on the creases where folded and emailed Ex Why Zed to inform them of the damages, suggesting they check their paper folder. I explained that the first magazine pulled out of the box had a 1.5" tear on one of the creases. I checked the next half dozen or so and they appeared fine. I'd had several customers complain about tears in exactly the same place and mentioned I had spares to send out (only because my numbered run was 100 but I ordered 150 in case I messed up with the number stamping) but resending items is an additional expense for me and I'd now have to go through each one now to check the condition of them. Mike's uncaring and seemingly sarcastic response was, "Yes, sounds like a good plan. Do go through and check. Hope our machine isn't broken."
I should have known better before ordering again.

That brings me to today. I paid for another batch of poster magazines for a new design. Knowing the issue with the address from before and the torn copies, I made sure I gave my delivery address in capital letters and requested they print a few extra magazines in case I have issues with tears again. Mike arranged to print an extra 5 copies on top of the 100 run.
Mike knew I had a 1st May deadline so emailed over the weekend to make sure delivery would be made before the deadline. Mike emailed back this morning to state that Parcelforce had attempted to deliver it last Monday but there was no one in so they took it to a post office 30 minutes away. I explained I never saw anyone that day as I was working from home. I never had a card left so never knew about it.
I took an hour out to walk to the post office and back this afternoon, gave my ID and went through a difficult time retrieving the package as Ex Why Zed had actually sent it to the wrong house number. Wondering if it was my fault, I checked my emails and could see I clearly told them to send it to no. 28 but they decided to send it to no. 8. Luckily I know the post master at the Post Office and after showing my emails and ID, the lady at the counter let me leave with the package. I was told I was just in time because if it wasn't collected by 5pm today, it would have been returned.
I emailed Ex Why Zed to let them know that they had sent it to the wrong house number despite being told the correct address but they never bothered to respond.

It's one cock up after another with Ex Why Zed and despite the actual products being good, their customer service is absolutely shocking. No doubt Mike will try and say I gave them the wrong address but I have the emails to prove otherwise.
It's a shame they couldn't rectify the shoddy service from the last order and I think I will have to use an alternative company for future poster magazines.

Edit: After over a week of the review being live, Mike (who I assume is director Michael Heaton emailed me to sarcastically thank me for the review. Ex Why Zed are a company that cocks up not once, but twice and rather than apologise for the mistakes, they blame it on the customer or just ignore their mistakes. When you give a honest review of their customer service, you get the director sending you sarcastic emails at 10pm.

Update after reading Ex Why Zed's reply: Let's all thank Mick the Pr*ck for his ever so caring words.

There WAS a human error on this job and, yes, we accidentally sent them to number 8 rather than 28. A digit was missed off the address.

We are mortified how this happened but thankfully this kind of thing happens once in a blue moon.

This was seemingly a perfect storm on both Carl's jobs but has given him the opportunity to add Ex Why Zed to his growing list of 1 Star reviews on Trustpilot. I believe we are the 19th 🏆

Excellent quality products and after sales service

Having decided to plunge into the world of creating a regular zine of my photographic work, I picked Ex Why Zed on the back of watching a YouTube when they were highlighted. Have to say I think they are brilliant. I found their whole customer interface to be excellent and their website a great support when I was designing.

But most importantly for me (and the defining point which means I will use them again and again) is their after sales service. I found some slight errors in some of the print finishes - no ones fault, just one of those things but the response was excellent. They just reprinted - no fuss, no drama. I was impressed.

The other thing I just want to highlight is the quality. It is really good. Our zine looks just amazing with the paper choices. And there is just so much choice.
