onerous undiclosed fees and take or leave reps

onerous and egregious fees compared to other car rental companies - $287 if you take the car out of state. and mileage penalty for local use. bait and switch with car you signed up for is not available then say you may have to wait several hrs. then offer lower level car and no reduction. agent said take it or leave it. there were 5 parties returning to the airport that refused to rent from them after finding out what was happening. the total cost of the rental would have been double what i ended up paying for a fox rental for the suv i had reserved at the con company -do not rent from this company -complete hassle at every level-been renting cars a long time and never had such a dirty feeling after leaving the place.

No car on arrival

No car on arrival ! We had been told by the call center our car would be held until 10pm. Our flight had a long delay. We arrive in Calgary @ 7pm with a confirmed booking to find no car available. They wanted to charge an extra $25 per day for an upgraded car. Very unpleasant desk manager to deal with. We got a refund and AVIS was happy to help at a cheaper cost

AVOID ROUTES CAR RENTAL OTTAWA AT ALL…

AVOID ROUTES CAR RENTAL OTTAWA AT ALL COSTS
I had a very disappointing experience with this company. At first, they offered a price that seemed fair, but later they tried to charge many extra fees. They told me that I could drive unlimited kilometers within Ontario, but in the end they still charged me extra for the kilometers I drove.

They also did not properly check my personal insurance and insisted that I buy their insurance instead. Because of all these additional charges, the final price I had to pay was much higher compared to other rental companies.

When I asked for an explanation, the receptionist refused to answer my questions and continued charging my card since they already had my card information. She did not seem to care about my concerns at all.

If you are looking for a rental company that you can trust and that provides good customer service, I recommend staying away from this one.

Car Insurance Policy Needs to be Evident on website

Routes would not allow me to use my car insurance to cover the cost of rental insurance. They require written documentation. Who carries their car insurance policy with them? Routes had a great low daily rate but by the time I paid for their insurance I could of gotten better deals from many other rental companies. The cost of insurance literally doubled the total cost of the 3 day rental from $142.75 to $286.69.
The car was clean, mechanically sound, and what we had ordered online through Booking.com.
Staff at the check-in, out, and shuttle drivers were excellent.

Take the credit card with you and be aware of downgrades

I've rented a car from Routes Car Rental through Carjet, pick up spot Marrakesh airport. I got into some issues:
- nobody was there with my name on a card expecting me at the airport, as stated on the rental voucher, I called the phone number and got an answer decently fast.
- the shuttle car arrived in about 15 minutes. In fact, this is a typical route duration between the airport and the company parking lot in Marrakesh.
- I've requested a "Clio or similar with manual transmission", which normally translates to a "mid-range small hatchback with a decent level of tech". I got a entry level mini cross-over instead (Geely GX3 Pro). I have no idea how this company can consider a car with decent equipment to be similar with one that doesn't have the cruise control. Size-wise - the Geely had a small trunk, I can say that there is a similarity here, a higher ride 18 cm instead of 13), but the comfort level is in another dimension - in the worse direction. The Geely seems to be built for shorter people, for someone 6.7 inch tall the wheel might be quite far and the wheel doesn't have depth adjustment, only height adjustment.
The company didn't offer any discount for this downgrade, the standard listing price for the Geely was 2/3 of the listing price of the Clio.

Another tip worth sharing is that the office in Marrakesh operates for four brands: Routes Car Rental, Noktauto, Next Car, and Priceless. The contact number for Noktauto is the same as the one that Routes have, in the office and/or Google Maps there are marketing materials for all brands above.

About the other issues that many customers complain about: if you don't have a physical credit card, expect fees. It is what it is, get on with it. I believe this happens because this gives car rental companies the greatest insurance level that they will be able to charge the client at a later time with the same card, for traffic fines, for example.

Rating two stars out of 5, mainly because of the unfair downgrade of the comfort level.

Great service

Great service
Until I could buy my car I rented from Ottawa airport location 4x and the experience was really good and Anu was always great with me.
Only one complaint was the extra charge to cross to another province, so you can imagine you are in Ottawa right on the border of Quebec and you need to pay almost the price of the car daily rental to cross to Quebec every day you need to cross.

Horrible experience with deposit handling

I rented a car through EconomyBookings and the supplier was Routes Car Rental in Morocco. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely frustrating.

When we arrived to pick up the car, I did not have the physical version of my credit card with me. The staff suggested using my girlfriend’s card and adding her as a second driver so that the deposit could be processed. We paid an additional €100 fee for this.

Later, the company claimed that we explicitly requested the deposit to be processed as a direct purchase (“Achat”) instead of a normal security hold, which is completely untrue.

The WhatsApp message they referenced as “proof” was sent after the rental had already ended and the vehicle had been returned, where they were asking me to confirm something retroactively.

Additionally, the car was returned on 17 February, and many days passed without any clear information about the refund of the deposit.

Providing misleading information about customers and delaying communication about deposits is extremely disappointing. I strongly recommend that anyone renting a car carefully document everything and be cautious when dealing with this company.

They charged me $166 for accidently…

They charged me $166 for accidently driving on a road that briefly crossed into Quebec. My total rental was only $105. I understand their policy, but their strict application in this sense shows they’d rather poach some money instead of applying common sense. I can’t imagine how bad it would be to deal with them if there was an actual problem.

I was blacklisted for leaving a critical review

I was blacklisted for leaving a polite but critical review on Google maps. They didn't tell when I booked the second time. They waited until I was in the office to refuse me the car, leaving me with no options because I took a taxi to their remote way-off airport location and had nothing else booked. I spent two hours trying to figure out why they would not rent to me, since I have a perfect driving record, etc. They finally admitting that they blacklisted me for leaving a critical review. This happened on my birthday, ruined my plans for the day, and cost me a lot of money to taxi to another company and rent full rates for the week.

If you rent from Routes, know the risk. If you leave a critical review at Routes, do it anonymously. If they can figure out who you are, you run the risk that they will vengefully blacklist you with all their partners and not tell you.

The original issue for which I left a critical review was because Routes took 1.5 hours to pick me up from the airport and rent me a car. The front desk person was very nice and I was patient, but there were obviously issues with how the Ottawa detachment was run. I was 30 min past their grace period returning it because I was stuck in traffic. I had a $10/day rental deal for 5 days. They charged me $80 for being late, and refused to consider that they had taken the same amount of time from me when I rented it, making me late for my meeting. This extra charge more than doubled my rental bill. I pleaded with them to no avail. This was a big deal at the time because I was a student and was on a tight budget.

I tell all my friends about my experience with Routes. I had a friend with me that day who documented the whole 2-hours blacklist saga on his laptop and also left a Google map review. We both left without a car, stranded.

Although I was blacklisted, they still emailed me promotions and discounts to try to get me to rent. So, they didn't have the courtesy to notify me that I was blacklisted, didn't tell me when I booked in advance (though it was through a 3rd party), and didn't even have the courtesy to take secretly blacklisted customers off their mailing list. This isn’t just an unethical local manager, but a systemic problem with Routes.

Ripped off by Routes

1. There was no sales person, only a glass kiosk. Every group that tried to get their car coming out was furious and cancelled with route.
2. They wadded on fees, wanted an insurance declaration from my insurance company, questioned my license.
3. We cancelled then had to find another car rental
Company. Routes changed us in full and we never received a car. 354$and change and no car!!!
Expedia threw up its hands and said they- ROUTES- won’t reimburse funds. We did not cancel in time.
5. Stealing is taking some one’s money
and not providing g service for that money!!!

I rented a car from Routes Car Rental

I rented the car thru Expedia. Everything was OK until I returned the car. Routes said they would send me a statement and everything was paid. The next day my Visa had a new bill for $500 and no explanation from Routes. A feel cheated and will fight this bill. I will never rent from them again and have written Expedia about the very bad business practices of Routes.
