Highly recommended company!

Purchased an inflatable stand up paddle board from Shipmates. I signed up as a new customer but the discount code didn’t work. I emailed the company on a weekend, not expecting a response but I had a reply within minutes! New discount code generated and I was able to complete my order online. Great quality goods (as described) and at a very reasonable price arrived promptly. I would highly recommend this company.

Excellent customer service

I ordered a pair of Chatham shoes at a very reasonable price. Unfortunately Royal Mail lost the parcel. Callum at Shipmates could not have been more helpful. He tried (without success) to get Royal Mail to find the parcel. Since they no longer had the right size in stock he offered to arrange for Chatham to send a pair at no extra cost to me. Before I had given the go ahead for this they had a delivery of stock and sent the correct pair by 24 hour delivery. I'm very grateful and very impressed at the excellent customer service.

Poor Customer Service

Shoes made by Chatham failed less than three weeks into ownership. Photographs of the problem were taken, making all very clear (the upper had come away from the sole). I was required to send the shoes back to the manufacturer before replacements could be sent out. Some three weeks later nothing received. Shipmates have effectively hidden from their responsibilities as supplier during this time – my purchase and contract was with them; not the manufacturer/their supplier. Their messages merely served to shift blame, instead of being upfront, taking ownership of the problem, and properly looking after their customer. At the time of writing this, I have still not received a refund. As ‘tangible’ compensation they offered a 10% discount on a future purchase – this (or similar) is available to any customer if they subscribe to newsletter.

Update (following response/reply from Shipmates): Any ‘grace period’ is erroneous in this. The Consumer Rights Act confers a right up to 30 days where a buyer can claim a full refund for goods that are of unsatisfactory quality, unfit for purpose, or not as described. It is clear the shoes had a manufacturing fault. It is reasonable to expect them to have sufficient durability so as to last more than three weeks – the shoes were not of satisfactory quality, and were not fit for purpose. My contract was with Shipmates; not the manufacturer/supplier, Chatham shoes. It is the retailer’s responsibility, and in this instance, it was Shipmates who were in breach of the Consumer Rights Act. Consumer rights are against the retailer (i.e Shipmate who sold me the shoes); not the manufacturer. Ignoring the Consumer Rights Act, giving a customer the run-around for c. three weeks, and hiding behind the manufacturer does not demonstrate Shipmates doing its “best to help our customers”. The sign of a good retailer is in their aftersales, and how they act when things go wrong. Shipmates did not support me, and failed to deliver reasonable satisfaction. And, I’m still waiting on that refund!

Reply from Shipmates

Hi Stephen, from start to finish we helped where we could. Unfortunately after 3 weeks the shoes are beyond our 14 day grace period as stated in our refund policy. At this point it was down to Chatham to take care of it as the warranty was with them. I tried my best to help where I could and had been on the phone to Chatham many times trying to work out what happened. When you expressed your upset I was quick to get a refund processed for you to avoid any further inconvenience. We now do not have the product and are out of pocket ourselves. We tried our best to accommodate with the discount code as you expressed the need to speak to a superior member of staff, even after I had refunded the order and did what I could to help you in this situation. We were unsure of what else we could have done to help you on this occasion as a refund had been given. We're sorry to hear you're disappointed but it does feel as though you wanted to find an issue with us on this occasion. As I'm sure you can tell based on our 200 other reviews its a rare event that we hate to see but we always try our best to help our customers

Lovely shoes from a great company

I ordered a pair of ladies Chatham boat shoes, they were very small fitting so I returned them no problem and asked for a bigger size, got the link to return and an email, got the next size they were perfect, lovely shoes, really pleased with how the return went, and I love the shoes... Thank you Jo
