I wouldn't touch this garage with a barge pole

I wouldn't touch this garage with a BARGE POLE.
I was impressed by their website and thought they looked like a trust worthy outfit, the car we had seen a mini clubman looked great.
We were looking for a replacement car and a present for my wife's 50th birthday, i was assured that the car was in excellent condition and trusted them so we booked train tickets from Leeds to come down with my wife and daughter to buy the car.
Nathan collected us from the station and took us to the garage for us to find that the car wasn't in the condition we thought it would be or portrayed in the pictures, it had scratches to the roof and the side, a cigarette burn in the drivers seat which was also frayed and split. We were gutted and got the usual oh well its a second hand car from Paris. Had we seen it in Leeds we would have walked away but with a hotel booked in Cambridge for the night and being so far from home we felt like we needed to purchase which was where the mistakes started.

We negotiated £500 off for the damage after calling a valeting guy in Leeds and researching the cost of a replacement seat, test drove the car and paid £8500, carried out the deal and headed on our way to Cambridge.

10 or so miles down the road i called into a garage and got some fuel, another 15 miles later the car broke down on me with the engine management light on and the car stating drive train issues. I immediately called the garage back who accused me of putting diesel in a petrol car, i assured them that i hadn't and that i had a diesel car of my own and was careful to have put the correct fuel in but they were still insistent i had and i didn't have a receipt to prove it.

They said they would send out a recovery vehicle and we were sat at the side of the road in the cold for over an hour, when Arun the owner arrived with the pick up driver he stuck his finger in the exhaust and into the petrol cap and pushed them under my nose and said that's diesel mate, you have put diesel in. I said i wouldn't know the difference in smell but i was certain i hadn't and said isn't it impossible because they have different sized nozzles? Arun replied no it can be done but don't worry we will get it back to the garage flush the tank and get it sorted for you but this wont be until Monday. My wife was looking at me as if to call me an idiot but i knew i hadn't.

The pick up truck had one space left and we were in the middle of nowhere but could see a pub in the distance where i told Arun we would go for food and that a friend was on his way from Leeds to get us so off they went with the car, the pub was shut and we ended up having to jump on a bus into Cambridge.

I then decided to check the fuel transaction and gave the garage forecourt a call to ask them to trace our unique payment of £40.04 and they confirmed i had indeed put unleaded in it so i asked if they could sort me a receipt out which they did. When my friend arrived he drove us 30 miles in the wrong direction to obtain the proof which i then sent to Arun asking for a full refund of the car, we eventually got home at 11pm after starting out at 6:30 in the morning.

Arun passed me to Zack the following day who was saying to me they would do diagnostic checks, get it sorted and get it up to Leeds minus our expenses and again i said no and that we wanted our money back. My wife was in floods of tears worrying that we would get it and it placed a huge amount of stress and financial hardship on us.
£150 in train fares
£40 in petrol which they didn't offer to pay me for which we put in the car.
£19 road tax
£35 admin fee for insurance change and £109 additional for the car of which the insurance company only paid us £65 back.
£86 hotel we had to cancel
Bus fares into Cambridge
Nearly £400 out of pocket with the whole experience.
No offer to compensate us in any way.

If it wasn't for my friend collecting me and me gaining a receipt they would have had me believe i had put diesel in the car, fixed and passed it back to me.

We had one of the worst weekends of our lives and all of this was with our 11 year old daughter who was with us.

We got our money back for the car, no apology for accusing me of putting diesel in.

I learnt some very valuable lessons that weekend.

Reply from Stirling Cars

Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re truly sorry that things didn’t go as expected—it must have been incredibly frustrating, especially with your wife’s birthday plans disrupted and your daughter there too.

We understand how disappointing it was to find the car wasn’t in the condition you had hoped for. Unfortunately, with used cars, these situations can sometimes arise despite best efforts. We did ask at the time whether you had put diesel or petrol in the car, and your initial reply was that you couldn’t remember. Within an hour of your call, our recovery truck was there, and we refunded you in full the very next day. We genuinely believe we acted as quickly as possible under the circumstances.

After thoroughly inspecting the vehicle, we discovered that the timing chain had snapped—a fault that was repaired free of charge at Stephen James Enfield BMW.

Once again, we’re truly sorry for the stress this caused. We did our best to resolve the situation swiftly and fairly.

Best regards,

Friendly, honestly dealer that goes above and beyond

1. Fair prices and quality cars
2. AMAZING and honest sales process provided by lovely people
3. Out of this world after-care

I can't rate Stirling highly enough and will recommend to everyone I know when looking for a used car from now on.

After searching for a new car and visiting several "pushy" and frankly dishonest dealers I was so relieved to meet Paris and Zak at Stirling.

Paris was super friendly and patient with me (stressed single woman buying used car!) and she made sure the sales and process was easy including liasing with my finance company and getting the car ready for me to collect, making sure it was in mint condition.

I should mention they have a wide range of cars available and honestly I was just impressed by their whole set up from the moment I stepped into their premises.

Then there's the after care that Zak has arranged and managed for me - absolutely OUTSTANDING. The car had an issue that no-one could have forseen and Zak handled the rectification seamlessly and he was even able to provide me with a courtesy car while works were completed. I took out warranty with Zak, but I've had warranty before and never received this level of care and attention.

I can't thank Zak and Paris enough for their professionalism and care. Thank you guys, it's obvious to me why your business is so successful!

If you're thinking of buying a used car, make sure you check Stirling out!

Excellent experience

Excellent experience purchasing a Mercedes CLA220 this week. Paris was helpful, no main agent pushyness. The whole process was really good. Zak was there for the actual purchase and supported Paris appropriately. Very happy.

Avoid buying from this company.

Bought a Nissan Car from this garage and so far I’ve spent £1000 rectifying issues with the car I bought. There are still issues with the car that I need to rectify at a later date.

So far the car has had four new tyres, a quote from the garage was “Tyres have been patched up and patched up multiple times plus there was little to no tread on all of them”

Both Roll bar links had gone, the suspension arm and bearing had gone on drivers side. Unless you’re an actual mechanic, you wouldn’t have known to look for these faults. The car was totally unroadworthy when we took it home.

We had parts warranty but were quoted into the new year for the works.

Genuinely feel Stirling Cars knew the issues wrong with the car and did very well to pull the wool over our eyes.
