In my experience thred up is a scam

In my experience thred up is a scam! I would strongly advise against using them. Essentially they make you pay to send in your clothes and then make you pay if you want them back as they didn’t sell. It’s a win win for them but a loose loose for your. I had brands like Levi kut from the kloth and Janie and jack all in excellent to new condition and they wanted me to purchase back my items for 6$ a piece. I sold a Disney sweather with price tag on so never used and i make 1.20$ and they take home the 20$

Don’t fall for this scam.

They state a good game

They state a good game. Send in your stuff, we'll keep you in the loop. No they don't. I had e-mails letting me know my things were listed and I could change the prices, make changes...no they set the price, the e-mails come later so you have zero control over pricing and even the shoes that I sent with tags that have never been worn were listed as worn. I will not ever be using them again, you're basically giving things away for Thred up to make money.

Do not sell with this company!

Do not sell with this company!! They fee you to death so you end up making maybe $2 for brand new, name brand pieces you submit. Just give it away to someone in need or sale on FB marketplace before you waste your time basically making money for free for this company. As a buyer I’m also not impressed. I’m sure there are some gems tucked away on the site but it’s not worth my time to dig through the junk.

Better to donate to Goodwill

Taking a bag to Goodwill is no harder than taking a bag to UPS to mail to Thred UP , which charges you for sending the items. They don't list most things, including really special good clothes in good condition, if it doesn't have a designer label. If they do actually sell something, they pay you a pittance , so what you earn doesn't offset the "service fee" . They also charge you for getting back what doesn't sell. At Goodwill your stuff is more likely to find a good home, or if not GW recycles too, and you can at least take a tax deduction.

They rob sellers blind

I’ve had some good purchases. As a seller though, it’s robbery. They charge you to send in your items. Of the $500 worth of items I packed up and sent, I’ve been paid literally pennies, not even equaling a dollar. So I basically paid to get rid of my clothes and shoes. They make a ton of money scamming the people who send in items. I could have sold my items on Facebook and made at least $200. But I would have much rather donated them to a charity than pay them to make money off my items. Don’t do it.

Waste of Time

The search and size functions on the website seemed to work fine enough, but I couldn't even get to order completion.

I realised, once I put an item into my cart, they added a timer. This caused me great anxiety, as I had other items I had needed to shop for.

Despite my best attempts, I couldn't find my last items "in-time," and the website decided to throw out half of my order, completely disregarding the time spent to make my initial selections.

I managed to screenshot half of it, but I couldn't search for itemd by listed name and the items that were previously in my cart weren't suggested to me. It's possible that someone else purchased them, but I wouldn't know. I understand there's one of the item, so they can't 'put it on hold forever,' or it wouldn't sell. They should be able to do SOMETHING, though.

It would be one thing if I navigated away from the website. Or if they had given me a pop-up, delay, notification, any attempt to check-in; some saving grace. No. They were gone.

Notifications; any information about the timer, a prompt to "sign up, for more time, maybe. There is a myriad of ways to approach this to make it user-friendly.

Not everyone, myself included, can run multiple tabs to be able to add them all at one time to their cart, no one should have to, it(the shopping experience) shouldn't have a sense on manufactured urgency; that is inherently predatory.

TL,:DR: I nearly spent $100+ at Thredup for some second-hand clothes, and all I got was a rude shopping experience and a heap of wasted time.

Hello Ash,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this detailed feedback. We’re really sorry to hear that your experience left you feeling anxious and frustrated — that’s absolutely not the feeling we want anyone to have while shopping with ThredUp.

We completely understand where you’re coming from. Because many of our items are one-of-a-kind, our cart timers are in place to help create a fair shopping experience for all customers who may be interested in the same pieces. That said, we truly hear your concerns about how the timer felt sudden and stressful. If it helps for future shopping, one option is to start a bundle order. This allows you to purchase the items you’re sure about first, while still continuing to browse and add more pieces to your bundle afterward. If you’re not quite ready to check out, you can also add items to your Favorites and move them to your cart once you’re ready to complete your purchase.

We really appreciate you pointing out opportunities for clearer notifications and a more user-friendly approach. Feedback like yours is incredibly valuable, and we’ll be sure to share it with the appropriate teams as we continue improving the experience.

We’re sorry again that this visit didn’t go as hoped, and we truly appreciate you giving us a try. 💚

This site is a joke and will rip you off. I sent 3 evening gowns and they gave them away without my consent and sold an over $150 dress for $2. PLEASE DON’T GIVE YOUR CLOTHES TO THEM!!! You are better off donating it to people. What a scammer, BEWARE.

You Can Get Good Deals But Sizing Disclosure Is Unreliable

I've bought some excellent pieces from them and I find their assessment of the quality to be accurate. I've also sold a ton of my clothes with them. I don't get alot from those sales, but it is very easy to send them a bag and they do in fact sell almost everything I send.

They have improved alot since a year ago when I was ready to give up on them. They reported wrong information about clothes I bought, including wildly innaccurate sizing, and they did the same when they listed my clothes I sent for sale--I'd see measurements listed that were just absolutely false. But they seemed responsive to complaints like mine and there has been an improvement. I'm not happy with their payments for selling my clothes, but it's so easy to just send them a bag I'll live with it. It is extremely difficult in my experience to sell on Poshmark or eBay unless you want to spend a ton of time on it which I don't have.

They still need to work on their size disclosures. Unlike other resellers including The RealReal, they sometimes (not always) don't give good information on the measures for items they sell. It's never enough for a reseller to give only the size from the label. Clothing sizes vary enormously between and even within brands, and over time as well, so older items marked "M" may be a different size than the same brand today. Also people alter their clothes so sometimes the tag will say one thing but the size will be smaller.

Thred Up is better at this sizing disclosure nowadays but I can't understand why they aren't making it a priority to get it right. They must get so many returns, plus missed sales because I very frequently choose not to order something from them because they don't give measurements.

Great Opportunity

I recently sent many items in--ladies' clothing as well has several handbags and wallets. I was impressed with the listing prices--several were higher than I expected. And the best part is that I don't have to deal with bids, shipping, and taking photos. Sure, they deduct a fee for each shipment you send to them (not per item)--but if you read their policies, this is fully disclosed. I had 2 wallets deemed not to be sold--which is fine--they were older and well used. You can have them recycle--which is what I opted for, since I didn't want to deal with the hassle anymore--or pay a small fee to have the items returned. Is it perfect? No--what is? But, honestly, for me, I prefer this option over Poshmark, ebay and the like...and I've taken similar items to a local consignment shop and they didn't take 1/2 of the items that ThredUp accepted. It depends on what is selling at the moment. For me, I am very happy with ThredUp and looking forward to my next 'clean out'. THANK YOU!!!

Mostly Disappointed

I continually have ordered from ThredUp remaining hopeful. Once I’m awhile I get something good, but most often it’s a let down. My recent order contained jeggings which were described as actual jeans. I’m 55 years old. I don’t wear jeggings. It also contained a cute pair of booties that were described as “ good condition”. I threw them in the garbage a day later because the scuffs on the suede were so bad. I am waiting on a credit from the jeggings but I think I am done buying from them. I am more disappointed than satisfied. I’ve received items that were described as women’s and when I received it, it was a child’s pair of pants and an entirely different brand than what was listed.

I am so disappointed with my experience…

I am so disappointed with my experience with ThredUp.
A trusted friend recommended them for some of my nice jeans, etc. Actually disappointed doesn't describe how I feel... I am very angry and feel that I have been swindled by what I thought was a reliable consignment company. I sent four HUGE boxes of clothes to them...AG jeans, a purse that was brand new and cost $500, another purse carried once that was $300, numerous clothing items from Anthropologie, Eileen Fisher, JohnnyWas, and comparable brands. Most of these items were never even listed, and I never heard any response from them. Their website doesn't work, there is no customer service contact. My only emails from them are of items sold of which my grand total is about $200, and I can't figure out how to get that from them. I have lists of the items I sent to them and am going to report to BBB.I'm remembering silk blouses they listed for$2.00, Rails dress I never wore and on and on. I regret ever sending anything of value to them and will never send ANYTHING to them again. I would like to get my boxes back but not getting my hopes up because there is no customer service response. DO NOT SEND ANYTHING TO THREDUP... you will be better off giving to a friend, someone who needs clothes, or donating .

Thed Up is the biggest rip off if you're a seller! Sellers beware. I learned an expensive lesson and I hope to save other sellers from making the same mistake. You'll end up owning more money than you'll make. They charge you a ton to send your stuff in, then you'll make about $1.00 on high end stuff you're selling. Then if it doesn't sell you have to pay to get your stuff back plus $11.00 in shipping. I'm surprised they're still in business.

I had similar experiences as other reviewers who had a negative experience with this company.

I had similar experiences as other reviewers who had negative experiences. Have bought and sold with this company for a few years and in my early experiences with them they actually paid me something for some of my clothing items, but my latest experiences they have not been giving me reasonable amount of credit for clothing sent in, always charging higher processing fees that always exceed the amounts they state was earned from my goods sold. Some of my purchases from them I was satisfied with but I will never send anything to them ever again. It's sad that they are taking advantage of people by selling customers clothing for high prices and not paying anything for items they received.

Color was really off and pricing is ridiculous

Color was really off. What I thought was light tan/off white was pink. Jeans I purchased are too tight. Started a return to find out that there a 4$ fee for each item reducing my return $ to practically nothing.. not worth me packing, driving to the post office and sending. I ordered 4 simple items that ended up costing me more than what I thought it was suppose to be with the discounts they kept showing everywhere. So for three jeans and one child hood jacket It cost me nearly 90$ ..Only 2 pairs of the jeans are worth keeping, the third and the jacket should be returned due to sizing and color, but because it cost to return it’s stupidly not worth it! I won’t shop or support this company ever again. Total rip off and scam when it comes to pricing representation during the selecting process.

I had the same exact experience as a previous user. Sent in 3 pairs brand new Abercrombie pants. They never processed them and I had to reach out and ask why they weren’t posted. Claimed they were “men’s” clothing and don’t accept them. Something feels very off and dishonest. I have sold with them in the past with good payout, but the last few years, like all companies just looking to make money and not look out for their customers, they have been sketchy. Would absolutely never sell or maybe even never buy from them again. Really unfortunate. I was primarily getting clothing from them but I can’t stand behind their questionable standards now.

Non-existent customer service.

Price was OK, arrival was reasonable though could have been quicker. Gown was pretty much as advertized, but I had to return it: all I did was try it on and take it off, and I had sequins all over the floor. I have lots of experience with sequins and stones, and when they fall off that easily it usually means the garment is old and the glue dries out. It's impossible to get any help with how to return the item. I'll scope out the address and pay for shipping (they want $10.99 to have you print a label). This was my first, and now my last, purchase from Thred Up. Wish I'd looked here first!

UPDATE: After the above was posted, thredup reached out and waived the restocking fee and the return postage fee. Thank you, Shilo. It was still a hassle, but was resolved well.

Im getting ready to move and I have a shopping problem! Sending in many bags to Thread up only because process is easy. However my items are premium quality and in like new condition. I know the items they except, and its is disappointing what you net from doing business with them. HOWEVER, The last bag I sent to them definitely indicates they are stealing my items. The other reviews are correct. They are only processing a few items and most of my items are completely missing. They say there were 5 items in the bag. This is not true. the bag weighted 20 lbs and had many, many items including jackets and shoes. They can say they don't accept things all day long, but where are the missing items?? Seems a mystery what recourse there is. But I am looking into this. My local news channel is my current thought, they love investigating crooks and this would be a good company to expose. Please speak up if this is your experience with Thread up
