It was easy to pick up and drop off. Both locations were good.

I rarely leave bad reviews, but this experience with Maui honestly left a really bad impression.
We booked and paid for a Maui Beach 4 Berth, but ended up getting a lower-tier Britz Wanderer instead.
Mistakes happen, and honestly, if the company had handled it properly from the start, I probably wouldn’t even be writing this review.
What really frustrated us was the way the refund process was handled afterward.
At first, Maui only offered NZD $175 compensation plus the road user charge waiver. The amount didn’t really make sense considering the difference between the camper we booked and the one we actually received.
So we ended up having to check the pricing ourselves, take screenshots, calculate the difference, and question the numbers directly.
Only after we pushed back did they revise the calculation and increase the refund by another NZD $445.
What made this even more disappointing was that one of the reasons we specifically booked the Maui Beach model was for the large rear window.
We had actually planned part of our trip around that experience and even booked accommodation at Lake Tekapo because we wanted to enjoy the scenic drives and views from inside the camper.
The vehicle we received had no rear window at all.
It might sound like a small detail to some people, but when you spend this much money on a premium campervan trip through New Zealand, those details are exactly what you are paying for.
Instead of enjoying the scenery the way we had planned, the experience felt compromised from the start.
For a company that markets itself as a premium brand, the whole process felt unnecessarily frustrating and disappointing.
At no point during pickup were we proactively offered a proper explanation or fair adjustment for receiving a different vehicle than the one we specifically booked and paid for.
Instead, it felt like the responsibility was entirely on us to notice the issue, question the numbers, and fight for a fair resolution ourselves.
The problem wasn’t just getting a different vehicle.
It was the feeling that we had to work far too hard just to get a reasonable outcome in the first place.
Definitely not the experience we expected from Maui.
My response to maui latest reply:
Thanks for your response.
I understand that substitutions may sometimes be necessary. However, I was disappointed that I was not notified before arriving to collect the vehicle. Finding out only at pickup left me with no real choice but to accept the replacement.
What I find even more surprising is that if the substitute vehicle was indeed a downgrade, no partial refund or compensation was offered at all.
From a customer's perspective, being given a lower-category vehicle without prior notice and without any adjustment in price is difficult to view as fair.
I'd appreciate an explanation regarding both points.

This is a tricky one as I have used Maui campers before with an overall good experience. This time has been different. I hired two beach 6 births this time round. A more modern Mercedes sprinter chassis RV which has been fine. And then there is the older IVECO daily RV I have been driving. This vehicle has clearly had a hard life and has not been well maintained and serviced. There have been several issues which have made it not suitable for off-grid camping. And if you can’t freedom camp or camp anywhere other than powered sites, wouldn’t you just hire a normal vehicle, stay in proper accommodation, being more comfortable and saving money along the way? The issues are: house battery that would not run the diesel heater for more than 2 hours, hot water heating that didn’t work, a door latch that would stick and not allow you to remove the key from the lock, and a tap on the gray water outlet that was seized and eventually broke. After trying to camp off grid two nights (each being after a full 16 hours of charging on mains then night prior) and freezing each night, we booked a service appointment back at Queenstown where we picked up the vehicle (we didn’t intend to return here). The house battery was replaced, the hot water fixed and the door lock replaced. They elected not to replace the gray water tap. The next night at a powered site was ok until we tried to empty the gray water in the morning and the tap would not open. So back to Queenstown again we went for another service call to have that replaced. Anyhow, tonight, despite new batteries, the battery would not run the diesel powered house heater for even 2 hours (whilst the other van in our party has been toasty all evening and night). No mention of reimbursement for the costs incurred driving back to Queenstown twice or the additional nights at powered sites. Honestly, if you want to stay in towns, then hire a normal car and stay in fixed accommodation. You’ll enjoy the roads in a car more, be warm and comfortable over night and you’ll save money. If you want to freedom camp or camp in DOC sites etc, these vans are not fit for that purpose, at least when they are a few years old. It should not be up to the renters to log all of the accumulated issues and then spend days and money returning to base to get things rectified. Surely the onboard systems should be tested between rental periods. This sadly, is the last time I will rent from Maui / THL.

Connie made the Maui experience absolutely amazing. She was helpful, knowledgeable and so hospitable. The Motorhomes are clean and maintained well, and the team is trained well to explain how a Motorhome works. As a first time Motorhome renter, I was initially worried, but thanks to Connie's clear explanation and helpfulness to even help us load our luggage, we were on our way in no time. I highly recommend Maui Motorhome Rentals as a company and as a motorhome.

We spent over $7,000 on what was supposed to be a premium experience with Maui in Queenstown, including the Platinum package, fuel pack, and Drop & Go. Unfortunately, it turned into a really disappointing and stressful experience.
Despite paying for a top-tier package, there was absolutely no flexibility when it came to returning the van after hours. This left us scrambling on our final day to organise alternative arrangements, which was the last thing we expected after spending that kind of money.
The van itself was another major letdown. It was advertised as being only two years old, but it clearly wasn’t in good condition. During a few rainy days, we discovered leaks that caused the bed to get soaked. It made those nights incredibly uncomfortable and honestly quite miserable.
It’s such a shame because we absolutely loved Queenstown and New Zealand as a whole, it’s a beautiful place and we had been looking forward to this trip for a long time. But these issues really took away from what should have been an unforgettable experience.
We just wish the staff had been more flexible and supportive in helping resolve these problems. For a premium service at this price point, the experience fell far short of expectations.

We rented a motorhome from Maui for our New Zealand- South Island road trip and had a good experience with the vehicle itself—it was well-maintained and well-equipped. However, their rigid 4:30pm closing time became a real problem. While this is listed on their site, what wasn't acceptable was their complete inflexibility and lack of after-hours options. Our flight times didn't align with their business hours, and despite inquiring about solutions, they offered nothing. We ended up paying for an extra night of accommodation we didn't need, which significantly added to our trip costs. For a rental company, this lack of flexibility around flight schedules is a major oversight. That said, if Maui introduced an after-hours pickup option at a reasonable cost—even just one evening slot—it would be a game-changer for international tourists whose flights don't align with standard hours. The motorhome was good, but their customer service inflexibility cost us money hence the 3 point rating.

From the moment of choosing what we wanted for our trip, everything just went so well. We were given so many options it was all about what we wanted. We arrived Frankton early pick up and given more options, outside tables, chairs blankets etc. Advised not to use the crown range etc and we were off. Literally, that easy easy ,that quick. Driving a large van was easy with it feeling like a large car, fully auto, Great right! Absolutely no probs at all, great for veiwing Fiordland, Queenstown and all in between. Amenities were great meals, great. We used camping grounds to use their showers and abulution facilities as we werent interested in cleaing out the portoloo or use of the shower. There is also a fee payable sometimes on return for this usage just so you know. Returning vehicle was as easy and quick as the pick up. Freecourtesy return to Frankston Airport was also provided. So the TV never worked but we were too busy looking at the sites anyway. all facilities were working and in good condition, clean and tidy. BBQ eating outdoors in cool clear April was so good, and yes we did get a dose of snow on the Remarlables and Yes in rained in Milford Sound. Unforgetable for our 35th wedding anniversary. Enjoy all, great experience of place, vehicle and time.
E noho ra.

We've used the Queenstown Maui rentals twice now, and both times were a hassle free experience.
There's a bit of a wait for paperwork, you need to keep that in mind.
Also personally I use the no-excess option for accidental damage, which really helps remove the stress of worrying about someone scratching your van.
Very easy to get to from the airport and nice and helpful staff.

I like the friendliness of the staff. What I didn't like is that I was not given full explanations of the options and the costs consequences when I requested the change of vehicle to smaller size van. The electrical system needs to be checked more regularly to ensure its full functioning. The pick up briefing needs to show by testing that everything works, not just by word explanation.
