Royal Canin’s “Gastrointestinal” pouches are sold as a veterinary diet, yet the back of the pack gives no percentage breakdown at all — just vague “meat and animal derivatives.” The ingredient list even includes sugar, which makes no sense in a product marketed for digestive recovery. Sugar is heavy on digestion; putting it in a “gastrointestinal” food is not just inappropriate — it’s cruel to the animals it’s supposedly designed to help.
The sugar is there purely to make it palatable. Remove the sugar and the underlying formulation is exactly what it appears to be: low‑quality and unsuitable for digestive recovery.
The packaging plays a role too. The clinical white, science‑style design gives the impression of a precise, therapeutic product — but the lack of composition percentages and the inclusion of sugar tell a very different story. The branding looks scientific; the formulation does not.
I’ve been offered this product several times by my vet at £3 per pouch, while Just For Pets sells the same product for £1.60. For a product with no clear composition, added sugar, and no explanation of how it supports gastrointestinal recovery, that markup is indefensible.
The real issue is trust. When a vet sells a “gastrointestinal” food at nearly double the retail price — without disclosing the lack of percentages, the presence of sugar, or the low nutritional quality — it undermines confidence in the recommendation itself.
A medical‑style label shouldn’t replace basic honesty about what’s in the food.
Update: Royal Canin redirected me to a Trustpilot form asking for my details, but this still doesn’t address the points raised in my review.
My concerns were about composition, the inclusion of sugar in a “gastrointestinal” diet, and branding that suggests precision without providing basic transparency. These are product questions, not matters that require my personal information.
Final update:
Royal Canin have now emailed me directly, but again avoided answering any of the points raised — composition transparency, the use of “meat and animal derivatives” without percentages, the inclusion of sugar in a gastrointestinal diet, and the significant price disparity between veterinary clinics and retail outlets.
Instead, I received a long, medical‑sounding explanation about nutrient philosophy that did not address the questions. These are straightforward product issues, not matters requiring my personal details or a private conversation.
At this stage, it’s clear that Royal Canin are unwilling to provide transparent information about the formulation or pricing of this product. That speaks for itself.
Final Update (Royal Canin’s Own Admissions)
Royal Canin have now responded directly. Their clarifications confirm the core issues raised in my original review:
They choose not to disclose composition percentages, despite competing veterinary diets doing so as standard.
The primary proteins in this “gastrointestinal” diet are pork and poultry by‑products, which are not clearly identified on the packaging.
The significant price difference between veterinary clinics and retail stores is due to business model differences, not product value.
Royal Canin provide no financial incentives to vets, meaning the higher clinic price is absorbed entirely by the pet owner.
These points align exactly with the concerns raised at the outset:
a medical‑style presentation, vague ingredient categories, no disclosed percentages, and a pricing structure that depends on opacity rather than transparency.
Royal Canin’s response did not address the underlying questions about formulation clarity or the inclusion of sugar in a gastrointestinal diet.
Their own admissions speak for themselves.
This matter is now closed on my side.

New formulation for cats (11+) is terrible. Sorry.

It was honestly the only brand that didn’t cause allergies for my dog, so I’m now a loyal customer :) their customer support is also pretty great, they’re very helpful and quick to solve any issues
I bought 2kg of the Royal Canin Digestive Care kibble for my 2 pedigree Bengals on 1 May, 2026 as I believed one of them would benefit from a little more fibre in their diet. Both cats share the food bowls. Both cats ate a very small quantity of this kibble and that afternoon they did not eat their normal dinner of human grade kangaroo mince. The next day the cats did not eat their normal breakfast of the same, nor did they eat any of their regular Black Hawk Chicken and Kangaroo kibble on 2 May. On 3 May both cats became very listless and commenced vomiting. They also did not produce any stool until that afternoon when they both had very runny, yellow diarrhea. Both cats also stopped drinking water. On 4 May I took both cats to the Emergency Vet and both cats were given an injection of Cerenia to control nausea and vomiting. I declined the vet's offer of blood tests as the vet visit and injections cost $530.00 and I am a pensioner. The cats were still lethargic and not eating and still had diarrhea. On 5 May I spoon fed both cats some Dine treat (in the tube). Both cats started to eat small quantities of kangaroo on 6 May and both started to become more active. On 7 May both cats were eating their normal diet, drinking water and both produced normal stool. I contacted Royal Canin Customer Care and they refused to take any responsibility for my cats illness due to the consumption of the Royal Canin (which I had bought in good faith). Be very wary of this food as your cat might become seriously ill after consuming a small quanity like my cats did!
All was good including the delivery and quality of the product! Happy with it!
I have been using it for over 2 years since I switched food for my dog. It's like night and day.
In December of 2025 I purchased an extra bag of Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier food to have on hand to prepare for Winter. I opened and started using that bag the end of March. I heard a rustling coming from my pup's bowl and saw the food moving. A disgusting large slug the same color as the food, crawled out of the bowl! No, I didn't take a picture of it because it was too vile! I didn't think it could come from the food until it happened two more times as they slithered away on the floor!
The response I got from Royal Canin was less than desirable. First, it was in question as to why I waited so long to open the bag, even though they give you a one-year guarantee on the food. Second, I was given a $20 coupon that's absolutely useless because its only good on very large bags or cases of food, which Im guessing according to their terms must be eaten immediately after opening. This bag with the slugs was a 2.5 lb bag. Why would I ever consider buying a larger bag, let alone ANY of their food again after such a vile experience!
They asked for pictures of the UPC and the expiration date, but there hasn't been any further correspondence from them. Again, DISAPPOINTED in their lack of concern and I will never trust the brand again!
My dog sadly got diagnosed with diabetes in December 2025, which was a life changing event for him. We are on a rollercoaster with his insulin dosage as he is unstable still. Now Royal Canin have stopped producing the diabetic dry food & replaced it with Glycobalance. Poor Bentley is on day 1 of the new food and has an upset stomach & is being sick. Our poor dogs are going through 2 injections a day & now illness due to a change in food. Its so awful to go through this event as it is. Why change the mixture & make dogs have to go through this? It doesnt make sense.

I just switched my 1 year old lab to RC after falling in the trap of buying the "HUMAN GRADE, GRAIN FREE " BOUTIQUE brands and watching him have inconsistent bowel movements and lethargy from them. He's been on Royal Canin for 2 weeks now and the improvement was noticeable right from the start. He eats it eagerly which I didn't experience with the other brands I tried and his energy level is more regulated and consistent without the sudden highs and lows he had before. I highly recommend anyone else on the fence about RC to give it a fair try for the wellbeing of your dog
Awful! I’ve been a customer for 20 years of RC for all my pets, as has my family. My 14 year old diabetic dog is now without his food because they’re changing it to a different formula. And the only advice is change over to the new one gradually (can’t, as I have none of his old food left) or ‘speak to your vet for extra monitoring’. Surely a company who should care about their customer and their pets would have done this gradually with notice so that people could introduce the new food gradually, especially when it’s for diabetic pets! There should’ve been a collaboration with online retailers like pets at home, animed, pet drugs online etc where a warning that this food will be discontinued so prepare for the new different version! I will never use RC again. Absolutely terrible. Fuming that I just got referred to my vet for extra monitoring!
They have a kitten club that my cat's breeder had codes for. This gets me a free bag of food, and 40% off the next 2 purchases from Petbarn. BUT I entered my address wrong and the food went to Queensland. When I tried to get Australia Post to redirect it (!!!) they wouldn't. So I rang Royal Canin and they were happy to send me another bag, to the right address.
Love the food haye their website ordering is too complicated
The delivery was on time and the way it was package. And the quality of service, Can't complain.
I was at home the whole day. Even received some packages from Amazon. Now I found out that my order was delivered somewhere else
The package arrived fine and was actually delivered to my house this time (the last delivery, the delivery person opted to drop it off at an inconvenient drop location versus bringing it to my house). And the bag of cat kibble arrived in perfect condition.
My food-obsessed labrador ate the Royal Canin anallergenic kibble with gusto first time, but a few minutes later she barfed it up. After that she wouldn't eat it. Just leaves it in the bowl! This is a dog that will eat rotten animal remains given half a chance. I'm mixing it in with a cheaper supermarket brand to try to get rid of it.
