I hired a tutor named Cole B one star
I hired a tutor named Cole B. through Wyzant to help me edit and improve my novel. Initially the platform seemed promising, unfortunately, what should have been a productive experience turned into an extremely disappointing waste of time and money.
Cole initially charged $40 per hour. At one point, he increased his rate to $50 without notifying me beforehand. When I questioned the increase, he claimed it was an accident.
On two separate occasions, Cole claimed he couldn't hear me during our online lessons. As a result, I had to cancel both sessions after approximately five minutes. Despite the lessons being cut short because of these audio problems, I was still charged.
I also entrusted Cole with my manuscript, expecting meaningful feedback and editing assistance. After multiple lessons, he had only worked through approximately Chapter 10. He later sent me a document supposedly containing corrections, but when I opened it, there were no corrections.
I had invested my time, money, and trust in someone I believed would provide professional assistance. Instead, I was left with incomplete work, wasted sessions, and unexpected charges.
Cole eventually issued an $87 refund, but that did not resolve my dissatisfaction with the overall experience.
I contacted Wyzant to explain what had happened, expecting the company to take my concerns seriously.
Instead, customer support informed me that Wyzant tutors are independent contractors and that the company has no control over how they conduct their lessons. I was also told that Wyzant's Good Fit Guarantee applies only to the first lesson and that I was ineligible because I had continued working with Cole.
Rather than addressing my specific concerns about unexpected charges, canceled lessons, and incomplete work, Wyzant directed me back to the tutor.
I find it unacceptable that a company can facilitate tutoring services and payments while taking such a hands-off approach when a customer reports serious problems.
My complaint was never about expecting guaranteed results. It was about paying for services that, in my experience, were not delivered as promised.
After this experience, I have completely lost confidence in Wyzant.
I will never use Wyzant again, and I would strongly caution anyone considering the platform to understand its policies before paying for multiple lessons.
One star. Extremely disappointing.
I Had Some Hope With This Company
I had some hope with this company, but they do not protect their teachers. In fact, immediate blame goes on the teacher with long emails accusing the teacher of credit card fraud, when in fact the parent messed up and admitted it with proof. I had to call three times to ask for a supervisor, placed on hold forever, and then given the run-around since their customer service is clueless or doesn't want to help. The commission take is too high; the actual online platform not as good as Zoom; and they don't take suggestions to make everything smoother: "Thank you for the suggestion, we'll 'look into it.'" My advice is build-up a client base, and then run for the hills with your clients since it's only a 1099 job, which means they offer very little help and blame the teacher for everything .
Wyzant is not easy to work with
Wyzant is not easy to work with. They do not seem to truly understand their product yet. What they seek offer to students and parents is quality tutoring. But Wyzant doesn't quite get all of this yet. It alienates its teachers and treats them as commodities. They really don't do their background homework when it comes to rewarding great teachers. I've been teaching since 2005. Wyzant is definitely a no go.
Unfair ratings system!
Wyzant is a complete joke when it comes to how they allow parents and students to rate Tutors. I tutored a woman with a special needs son who she believed was a genius. From the first session it was evident he had a learning disability but this poor woman was delusional. He struggled with basic math facts (middle school student) and comprehension. By our 4th session, I was picking up new Wyzant clients left and right. The delusional woman got upset because her "usual booking time" was not available. I immediately apologized letting her know it was a mistake on the instant booking calendar as I was still getting used to the new feature. I told her since the customer who took her usual time was just having a consultation, I would make sure to go in and book that time for her from here on out. She became upset and told me she would find another tutor because the other customer "should not have been able to take my spot in the first place." She then went back to the last two lessons that had just occurred and rated me 1 stars which lowered my overall rating! Wyzant told me my only option was to void the lessons which I was not going to do because working with her special needs son was NOT easy. He was super prideful and kept interrupting me as I tried to explain things. I left that stupid platform and found a much better one which holds parents accountable!
Awful
Rejected my application for no given reason. If you are a tutor use ANY OTHER SERVICE.
As a tutor
As a tutor, I had a negative experience with Wyzant. My education is in conventional and combines work experience. My tutoring role with them started at their inception, at which time I passed their certifications, while many conventional candidates could not.
My reviews were all five star, but the Wyzant system singled me out and tried to reduce my rating to 4.8 stating a technical reason. They still had to post 5.0 because, I would imagine, they had complaints. All the Ivy leaguers had just 5.0. They contacted me again saying my subject matter was unclear. I didn't resubmit. It seems like, if not illegal, unethical manipulation is happening.
Beware! Very disappointing customer experience.
Very disappointing customer experience.
I joined Wyzant to find a qualified one-on-one Biology tutor for my daughter, a high school Regents Biology student. My goal was to hire a certified teacher to provide academic instruction and supervise the completion of required laboratory coursework.
Instead of requesting clarification about my needs, Wyzant flagged my inquiry, closed my account, and ultimately refused to reinstate it. After I provided additional details explaining that I was seeking legitimate tutoring services, I was informed that my request fell outside the platform's parameters and that the decision was final. Wyzant also stated that no representative would be available to discuss the matter further.
What I found most concerning was the lack of any warning, opportunity to modify my request, or meaningful appeal process. A simple clarification request could have resolved the issue. Instead, the company chose to permanently ban a customer despite the fact that I was seeking educational services from a qualified tutor.
Based on my experience, and speaking as a tech executive, prospective users should be aware that Wyzant may take immediate action when a request is interpreted as falling outside its policies, even where the user believes they are seeking legitimate tutoring services.
Very unreliable service
Very unreliable service. Booked few sessions with tutors, NONE of them showed up on zoom, either multiple postponement - then cancellation
Very terrible
Very terrible. Rejected application before even finishing. Be careful with all these companies saying they want to help, we as a people are better off talking in person, using email, and free tools and promoting ourselves and each other by working together, do not join these incompetent fools looking to make money off of your expertise, truly companies and the people behind such companies like this are the real lazy ones. Get lost.
I think they're incompetent
I think they're incompetent. I applied to be a tutor and went through their laborious "quizzes" to show I knew the fields. They rejected me because I supposedly "wasn't a permanent resident of the U.S." I've been an American citizen my whole life and I've lived in Washington State since 1992.
Entirely unimpressed.
Junk
I created my tutor’s profile while visiting my family outside of USA since I usually postpone such things due to busy daily routine . I received an email from them the next day saying that they deactivated my profile because some information “ available to them indicates that I am not a permanent resident in United States” . Apparently they racked my geographical location . I emailed back explained that I am on vacation and suggested to get back to this when I return . Wyzant support replied saying that they don’t have an ability to do so . I wasted half an hour working on my profile and now I have to listen to this nonsense and their assumptions . What a joke !
Background Appears to affect Hiring
I have had to change my first name or not use my photos to even get considered for tutoring on the site.
I have a degree from a top 10 university, and 4 years of outside tutoring work. But for some reason my profile always gets rejected.
Completely a scam!!
Completely a scam!!! They said the first lesson was free but then later charges me $49. They lied and now im stuck with this. I did email but they said they would review my email. And havent got back
Have used Wyzant for over 10 years.
I have used Wyzant for many years for all three of my children. Its an easy platform to access but you have to do some evaluating to fit the right fit. Going for the least expensive option or someone that is the most convenient can lead to set backs. If you take the time to read the reviews, profiles, etc. you will likely find the right fit. We have had chemistry tutors, SAT tutors, music, languages, physics. They offer a broad range of tutoring.
Unreliable platform for tutors
As a tutor with years of experience and certifications, it was exceedingly difficult to establish a clientele on Wyzant. Despite being approved in 30+ subjects, I rarely was given the opportunity to connect with potential clients and almost never received a response when I did. The majority of messages I received on the platform were later deemed "not legitimate," and though I am grateful that Wyzant has moderation, it is clear that their vetting methods for students are insufficient, resulting in wasted hours applying for jobs to no avail.
Wyzant can be a ripoff
Wyzant can be a ripoff. My tutor did not show up for first meeting, which was promoted as "free"..got charged $65 with all the fees..no canellation etc. Tutor claimed to have been there, so his word against mine. Wyzant refused to refund the charges, which were made without my approval. Very shaky outfit. Recommend Superprof..Wyzant looks for suckers.
Tutoring with Wyzant was a great experience
A good company to work with.
You can set your own pay rate and availability -- Excellent pay overall.
You can tutor in almost any subject you want, but you will need to be approved in subjects before you can tutor them; they usually require written qualifications or passing a subject test.
The only downsides of working with this company is that it can sometimes take applying to 20+ jobs on the job board or more before you can get a single student request - it can take a couple months or more to get a steady amount of students; reviews however can speed up the process.
Zero customer service
They tout great customer service and quick response, and a "Great Fit Guarantee". The online tutor showed up late with no notice, ended the session significantly early, then had the gall to charge us the full hour. I emailed Wyzant customer service several times to request a refund and received ZERO response. I ended up filing a chargeback with my credit card company and have now closed my account. Note that they also don't disclose that they charge you a fee on top of the tutoring amount shown until you are charged. Terrible, shady company.
