Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 376 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. People frequently complained about extremely long wait times for call-backs, with many left waiting many hours or even days without any proper response on the phone lines. Consumers often felt that the staff was dismissive, unhelpful, and frustratingly difficult to communicate with when seeking medical help during urgent situations. However, some customers also noted that when they finally connected with someone, the medical care received was surprisingly prompt, kind, and effective. A few people also praised specific doctors and practitioners for being thorough, professional, and genuinely reassuring during their stressful consultations. These positive moments brought genuine relief to patients who managed to get through.

Lack of care

Call 111 at 10 AM. I am elderly near 70 have had some kind of virus for two weeks feeling very weak have all the bad symptoms sickness, Diarrhea, high temperature, sore throat, hacking, cough, and crackling chest. I waited two hours for a call from the clinic. They said they would refer me to the hospital to be seen and I would receive a call within two hours. It is now 5 PM and I still have not heard back from them just as well I feel better or I could be dead! The people you most trust and they lie to you!

Beth was toxic ride domineering refused…

Beth was toxic ride domineering refused to accept the answers from a none medical professional and either her or the script want to show born patients into answering them how they want you to…as an intelligent person , an architect she couldn’t…she was belligerent and hostile spoke over my voice repeatedly and was a bully. This does not get the best out of ill patients. She was obstructive and hostile. I am aware of the service having low reviews and I am aware they struggle to get competent staff. Today’s society they need to find people with less egos and more empathy..

Absolutely shocking service

Absolutely shocking service. I called at 4am in excruciating pain due to an infection in a broken tooth. I could barely talk but had to spend almost 10mins asking ridiculous questions several of which were recorded incorrectly. I was then not called back for triage for over 7 hours. When I was they incorrectly thought I'd called 111 for breathing issues (good job I hadn't after 7 hours 🫤🫤). After establishing that I had called for my debilitating tooth pain, all I was given was 2 publicly accessible phone numbers, both of surgeries over 20miles from my home. I was lied to by 111 operator when I questioned this that I had been given some 'special' number only available via 111. I wasn't. I checked. One dentist wouldn't give me an appointment as I was not registered with them and their appointments were reserved for those that were and the other went to voicemail for over an hour. When I did eventually get through, that service was okay. But this was literally no thanks to 111 and I could done this by googling 'all open surgeries' and calling them at least 3 hours earlier. Shockingly poor service, would not recommend to anyone!!!

Getting to see a Doctor

Although the staff member was very polite, the system seems a long way round to get to an appointment. 1st call to 111 although he took information it's then passed to Clinical Advisor who then takes all information, then passed to someone else at Badger to give all the information, before someone else rings with an appointment.

I'm sure SCAS get some bits right, but failed a disabled person with complex issues

Asking the same questions over and over expecting a different answer if you live in a scas area take them strait to a and e if your concerned. I'm sure that get some bits right. But not on this occasion. I told them what's the problem with the person exc history of this issue occurring they fact they are allergic to the remedies to medicated and we need to catch it early and the advice was to wear loose clothing for goodness sake.

Dr. Dell

I received a call back from Dr. Dell after reaching out 111, she patiently listened to everything I had been going through for months and made me feel genuinely heard and cared for. Her empathy and professionalism gave me comfort after a long period of feeling dismissed, and she immediately arranged an urgent out-of-hours appointment for me. I will always be grateful for the care, respect, and humanity she showed me. thank you!

Forgotten to take medication on holiday

My own fault forgot to bring my one lot of medication on holiday so called 111 as advised by Tesco pharmacy. The woman that assisted me was polite, pleasant, helpful and efficient. She arranged for an emergency prescription to be emailed to the pharmacy and within 20 minutes I was issued the prescription, all in all a positive straightforward experience

Disgusted with the lack of care empathy…

Disgusted with the lack of care empathy and manners of two people who work answering 111 calls ...unbelievable the way iv been spoken to I have come off the phone shaking and tearful I am not in good health and I was ringing to ask for help after giving my details to these two rude men the first one was very abrupt the second one was arguing with me on the phone and clearly would not pass me on to a manager he kept saying nobody was there and said I would get a call back which hasn't happened he was awful to me and i feel vulnerable that these men know all my details and I do not trust them by the way I have been treated .they clearly should definitely not be working in this job being a retired nurse I am in disbelieve of how these men ever got this job of answer such important phone calls of the public in need its frightened me and i feel upset that others are going to experience this type of service ..knowing private details have been given out to people like this .

Ive read the horror stories and can…

Ive read the horror stories and can relate to some people on here. Tonight I had a nasty rash and other bad health issues. I rang 111 for help. Same usual rubbish chat thing and a 1 hour speach about this n that before waiting a further 15 minutes for somone to pickup. When I got through I told the lady my symptoms and what made me laugh so much that I forgot about my ill health was when she said to me if your going to pass out call 999. Right ime no pro but if your are about to faint how do you tell your body to wait a further 5 minutes before you make a call? Surely you would just pass out right?? Well anyway they told me to go to a pharmacist which was not helpful as I am housebound but thats not on the 101 questions they ask you. I said I was housebound so I got told to phone the doctors which I wont be able to do anyway because half the nation jumps on the lines at 8:30am and my docs just cut the lines until 1-2pm and then tell you no appointments. GRRR seriously

Be very wary of the advice and avoid A & E at Addenbrooke Hospital

With severe lower abdominal pain, my wife called 111. She has an old-fashioned faith in the NHS. Answered by someone obviously box-ticking, not a knowledgeable medical expert, polite and trying to be helpful, but asking the same questions repeatedly though the caller was in pain.
Said a doctor would call back. He did within half an hour but gave wrong information.
Said he had made an appointment at the Addenbrooke Hospital Urgent Treatment Clinic at 8.30pm.
On arrival, we were told that there are no doctors nor appointments available at this 'Urgent' Clinic, that 111 has no right to make appointments.
Only a nurse available, that 'triage' yet again, most patients have no idea what a triage is supposed to be.
Nurse sent us to A and E. 10 hours later we were still in A & E. Saw pleasant doctor around midnight, scan around 4am, result of a sort, suggesting an operation for a hernia, came around 6am. Exhausted, three days later, we are awaiting information from our GP as to the next move.
All in all, a sad NHS. Some nurses unable to perform tasks when asthmatic and/or overweight, difficult to distinguish any uniform for medical staff, doctors draped with stethoscope around their neck, like those terrible advertisements for some quack treatment that scream 'clinically proven' as though that has a meaning. Not always possible to decipher the name being called out for treatment. In this 21st century, put the names on screens.
Oh please, no more A & E destinations. 13 hours for a previous one. No, no, stress makes patients much worse, blood pressure readings go up as the hours creep onwards.

I was pushed through to 111 as my GP…

I was pushed through to 111 as my GP surgery no longer take direct appointments.
The agent clearly had no understanding of medical issues and stated that they didn't work with my GP surgery.
Working from a crib sheet and quite patronising, I will do anything I can to avoid using this "service" in future.
The NHS is run down and on its last legs.
NHS 111 isn't the answer as the triage is poorly executed and not always appropriate.

Absolutely Beyond Useless

Broken tooth so needed an emergency appointment, phoned 111 who gave me the number for Cumbria On Call. Had problems with them in the past, so found an NHS dentist that offers emergency treatment and phoned them instead, they told me to phone 111. Phoned 111 and explained the dentist advised me to phone 111 back to book the appointment in, nope can't do that phone Cumbria On Call.
Fighting back the urge to scream at someone, I scrolled further down the dentist's page and found that I could actually book the appointment online myself without all the damned faff.
Two minutes and done, I don't know who is the most incompetent, 111 or the dentist, neither had the brains to tell me I could book an emergency appointment in myself.
At least this time they didn't open the conversation with "are you the same sex as you were at birth?"
