Legitimate accounting business, confusing marketing

I got spooked reading the reviews here and emailed them asking for a refund, to their credit they processed a refund immediately.

Researched the company (2020 Accountancy LLP). This is a legitimate company and accounting practice. I also cross checked the awards they show on their websites with the awards sites and these are legitimate too.

I think the problem is:
a) they send a letter about filing a confirmation statement that includes a mix of both ‘urgent’ and ‘optional’ sentiments. They do specify you can file a confirmation statement directly with Companies House yourself, but for someone quickly scanning this and worried they’ll miss a deadline, they might not realise this and feel compelled to use this company when they don’t have to.
b) they ask for a lot of personal PII information (passport, drivers licence) and to upload this on their site. Not sure if they legitimately need this information or not, but because Companies House don’t ask for it, it spooks customers. And how securely this information will be stored or used is not clear.

My understanding is it’s not exactly a scam (I assume they would carry out the service they say they will as they are accountants), it’s more like misleading people in a rush. As of Jan 2025, they charge £65.99 to file a confirmation statement for you when you can do it yourself directly with Companies House for £34 online (or £62 by paper form).

It’s the same as paying an accountant to do something vs. doing it yourself.

My advice to the company would be to
1) reply to Trustpilot reviews to show they’re legit
2) clearly state in any letters they send they’re 3rd party accountants not affiliated with companies house, that CAN help you file and offer other services (“want help filing or want to outsource it to us?” Something like that)
3) share their website or a QR code that takes people to their services list and let people decide themselves what services to add
4) explain why they need ID documents like passport and drivers license and upload/process this in a way that reassures people it’s secure (right now it’s not so clear)

DO IT YOURSELF FOR A 1/4 OF THE PRICE

Received a letter about confirmation statements due from "Standard accounting"? It's a scam to scare you into paying them. Search on google for UK government confirmation statement and follow their instructions to do it for £13 instead of £40.

TBF it was a good reminder that I needed to do it hahaha.

Spam and scam

Dodgy company trying to catch you off guard,
sends a letter in a 'Private and Confidential' envelope reminding you about your upcoming confirmation statement with three easy options to move forward.
Upon receiving this, I was too busy to take in the information on the letter,, It is only now, a few days later that i read it through and spot the con.
Very clever, call yourself 'Standard Accounting' and anybody searching for you would read pages of Google results before seeing anything to do with this scam letter.

Had a letter that looks very official

Had a letter that looks very official. I thought it was from HMRC. i choose the option to close the company. It cost over £300. I then clicked on a link that took me to a website. I phoned the number and it was nothing to do with companies house or HMRC. They said they would phone me back that afternoon, but they didn't. There are so many people out there scaming small business. This is one of them.

Sent Scam Spam

I received a letter from them saying my Confirmation statement was due. The letter had a Standard Accounting letter head. It said I had 3 options. All options had barcodes linked to their website. The first one for filing my confirmation opened a page that was similar in style to gov.uk. The cost of filing was £39.99.

If you go to the online filing at gov.uk its £13 to file online.

I have had no previous interaction with 2020 Accountancy. This is just Scam SPAM.
