51talk is a scam! They offer very professional demo lessons, 1 hour. (further lessons are offered as 25min) Not native, some Pinay tutors. Then you want to buy a month, you discover there is no option to pay. You contact, but they respond in Chinese. Operators are almost incapable of English conversation. Anyway they say there is no 1 month plan, only 6 month with full prepay (!SIC). Now when you ask where on their website is the plan store (because there is no such in the offered apps).. they give you an offsite link for the $10k transaction. Ensuring you that "all the other Chinese parents do that and very happy, you can trust them" (with some lame screenshot).
I say, it is a typical Chinese scam with no ends with highly professional actors hired in Philippines for heating up the target.
Staff is unprofessional. The worst I've experienced, so far. Cancelled mock class 30minutes after the agreed schedule. Rescheduled at an inconvenient time the next day. They demand too much from applicants for a bare minimum pay. The foreign tutor corrected my pronunciation with a worse one. She is not even a native english speaker. She had a lot of negative feedback when she was not even paying atention while I do the mock class. Its better to pursue teaching career elsewhere.
Don't work for 51Talk! The staff are not well educated, have poor manners and are extremely demanding! They force you to buy a new expensive 'state-of the-art' computer just to qualify for the interview (with no guarantee of a job). There are more professional employers out there. Don't waste your time and money!
Very good experience with 51 talk, I can see obvious improvements of my kid, especially the speaking skill, and listening skill. We can choose our favourite teachers, as well as make an appointment with the teacher at any time. We need not to experience any traffic jam because it is online class. We need not to worry about the broken English because all the teachers from 51 talk are well selected from oversea.
Pros: Some students are polite, and materials are provided.
Cons: The salary is too low, and the high standards don’t match the pay. There are many rude students, and teachers' concerns are often ignored, even when critical. The penalties for being late are extremely harsh (4 pesos for seconds late, 198 pesos for 5 minutes late), but if students are late for 10 minutes or more, you’re forced to teach until the 29th minute to avoid complaints or bad evaluations, which result in penalties and downgrades. Emails to the company are often ignored, and there is little support—sometimes they pretend to assist but take no action. Upgrading is difficult, but downgrading happens quickly. The Airclass platform frequently crashes, and the company always blames the teacher. Resigning cleanly with a good reputation is incredibly challenging.
I decided to resign due to the company’s toxicity. I sent a Voluntary Service Agreement Cancellation (VSAC) form three weeks before it was to take effect, at which point the fixed slots hadn't been booked yet. After a week with no response, I sent a follow-up and requested the cancellation of auto-booked fixed lessons. They ignored this request, and the fixed slots became difficult to cancel. I sent numerous emails but received no response until I contacted Sherwin, an admin member. He confirmed receipt of my resignation letter and instructed me to teach until June 30, but then restricted my account with five days remaining. Despite confirming that he would, Sherwin didn't cancel my VSAC or the fixed lessons scheduled for July 7 and 8. This means the missed classes will be used against me, damaging my credibility and dignity, and the company will likely use this to dismiss me unfavorably.
My nearly four years with this company feel wasted. Please don’t waste your time here. Find another ESL company; there are much better options out there.
Support is just very bad! Sometimes, they don't even really try to resolve the issue and just ended the chat right away. Chat support is just useless. Overall rating to the company is just 1star. Penalties, support, very low class bookings are just some of the reasons why the company is not good. I dont recommend it to ESL teachers. And their advertisement is a lie. Almost 80k per month?? LOL.
so for my 2 months of experience, Lesson supports are rude. They ended the chat right away if the 1 resolution won't work. There staffs are all incompetent as well as there platform. This is an online platform but there statistics are not up to date. I've been in the BPO industry for 6 years and counting and I really know what CSR is all about as well as the Online Marketing Platform. So this company is not listening to there teachers' voice coz even a simple complaint, they can't help but to give there bad culture type policy. They have a very poor platform that's why they are running out of teachers daily.
Lousy chinese company. Do not join them, they will never treat you fairly. If you are desperate for a home-based job don't expect them to treat you ethically.
