Nice platform, high risk, not enough investments

I've had a smallish pot in a SIPP on Abundance for about 5 years, with mixed results.

You're investing in new projects and start-ups, so a fairly high failure rate is to be expected. They recently introduced council bonds at very low rates, which should be safe, but it is not for the faint-hearted.

I love knowing in more detail how my money will be used, and am interested in the projects.

There are not many investments and the secondary market is fiddly (lots of people selling in very small amounts - not sure why) so it can be hard to reinvest returns quickly.

I use it as part of a portfolio, its about 10% of my total pot, and most of the rest is in safe-as-houses local government pension scheme. Its fun, feels like a good thing to do but quite high risk.

Abundance Investment

I made my first small investment via the Abundance platform in 2017 and have since put small amounts into twelve different projects. All but one of them has delivered on their plans, although another one had to go through a restructure to get there. Throughout this process, and in general, the Abundance platform gives absolute clarity on each project. Yes, there are risks, but they are made clear and to be expected. It is also clear that you need to expect your money to be tied up for the long term.

Overall, it's an excellent chance to put your money directly into projects that can make a difference.

I love this platform

I love this platform, gives me a chance to use my money to build new clean infrastructure for the Uk and earn money. Tom and Che on customer service are also very knowledgable and great to deal with making things a pleasure.

Great platform but there have not been…

Great platform but there have not been enough new opportunities lately. The only current active investment is a real let down. The marketplace is dominated by a few traders, making all opportunities financially unattractive.

Great platform

Great platform, something I use to ensure some of my money does some really useful things to help the UK decarbonise. Abundance could do with bringing forward more investments, but what they bring forward is always excellent.

The platform is great and the idea…

The platform is great and the idea also, invested for a couple of years now. The updates are poor and late, for example one project last update was 5 months ago and its in default(advertised with a low interest because was a safe bet) another one has said the update due on beginning of new year...
So as I said, great idea but look carefully and diversifying is key. You can really lose it all.

Easy to use site

Easy to use site. Do wish there were more investment offers at the moment. Customer service is wonderful, alway prompt and dealt with by a pleasant person.

This is the platform that I go to first when I have some money to invest.

But (from reading other reviews) please read the prospectus before investing and do remember these are long term illiquid investments.

Investment in ethical projects

I have invested in three renewable energy projects through Abundance. It was very easy to see the details of the projects and make the investment. I get the satisfaction of supporting worthwhile projects and make a good return. They were risky projects, so I only put in what I could afford to lose. Nothing is guaranteed by Abundance and they don't give advice, so investors need to read the prospectuses carefully. My only regret is that renewable energy projects have since become few and far between.

Fraudsters.

These people are fraudsters dressed as an investment platform. They will encourage you to hand your money over to people who have no valid business platform, no permits to trade from Ofgen and no planning. They will then keep your money and all you’ll get is the odd email telling you that they are trying to get your money back. You will be asked to vote on a restructure to the investment that allows them to hold onto your money, and the option to get your money back says you will lose most of it for good. These people are thieves and they will be driving expensive cars with your money, and not give you a penny back. There will be a very smart reply to this review, but they won’t give me any of my money back.

Hi Demir,

We are very sorry that your experience investing on Abundance has been disappointing. We have previously replied directly to you and acknowledged your complaint.

Abundance is an investment platform and as with any investment, there are risks involved including the risk of losing your original investment. When making an investment on Abundance, you are lending your money to that specific company (or council), who use the money for the purpose set out clearly in the Offer Document. The Offer Document also sets out how the company plans to repay your investment alongside the offered return, as well as the risks that could impact the company’s ability to do so. If a company runs into difficulties and wishes to vary the terms of the investment, such as delaying the point of repayment, this can only be done with the approval of a required threshold of investors.

If you have any questions about the investments you have made, or our previous reply, please do get in touch.

With best wishes,

Green / Ethical investment

An interesting concept and set apart from their peers in being solely in the green & ethical sectors. I opened an account as I'm interested in the CMI product. I hope that grows some legs.
Account set up is painless compared to some others in the sector. Their site is nice and easy to navigate.
Quick card payments. Customer service helpful and prompt.

My only gripes are that deal flow is quite low, so diversification within this platform will be difficult unless their secondary market provides options.

The secondary market is a bit clunky in having to buy full holdings from selling users. It'd be nice to be able to buy part of a holding rather than a full £000s or £0000s chunk on offer.

The negative reviews on here just scream caveat emptor. They seem a bit off the mark and one of the reasons the FCA now requires users to complete appropriateness tests. If you're putting your emergency fund, house deposit, wedding fund etc into what is, in essence, an illiquid, long-term and potentially risky investment (and that's all made clear in the literature on the site) then you really only have your self to blame.

I have been very impressed with…

I have been very impressed with Abundance over the years. The majority of my investments are performing v well, but the true test of a platform such as abundance is when things go wrong. I was invested in one company that ran into difficulties in 2019. Abundance kept us informed of the situation and then working with us as investors and the company supported the company navigate its challenges and get back to business. Things were only fully resolved till a few weeks and it has been stressful, but I invest via abundance to not simply earn a return but also to do my bit to help tackle climate change. I also understand that not taking any risk at the moment, is perhaps the biggest risk! Keep going abundance!

Hi,

I am sorry to hear you found our secondary market difficult to use.

The secondary market is designed to allow investors to trade for free with each other even if they have small amounts of investments they wish to sell. However, we are required to comply with the rules of the Financial Conduct Authority which means this process can be more cumbersome than is ideal.

If you drop us an email on support@abundanceinvestment.com we will happily talk you through the process in order to get you started and listen to any detailed feedback you may have. To date our investors have traded almost £5m of investments, but we are always looking at ways we can improve the service.

With best wishes,

WARNING - Ponzi scheme inside.

WARNING: Ponzi scheme inside.

Invested in 3 projects, after 1 year two of them were "restructure" whatever this means. As a consequence I have lost pretty much everything (or say 90% of my investment which is pretty much the same to me). The 3rd one I haven't seen any return so far so I'm guessing it's going to go into the "restructuring" fraud as well.

What they don't tell you here is: you're gambling! Forget the politically correct answer "every investment comes with a risk" , here the risk is not quantified nor documented/displayed to you. Your money are managed by unknown people outside the Abundance organisation. If you are into this type of investments save yourself time go to a casino and chose black or red instead, you'll save time with the same risk profile!

There is not guarantee what so ever you're getting your money back. This site/company should be investigated by the financial authority. To all the other users here who have rated 4/5 stars here: have you actually ever taken any money out? Once you invest forget about taking any money out what so ever. It is also shocking that they provide investments within an ISA, just shocking... you've been warned!

\\EDIT: After having lost 15K on a "fake" project called Tandem I'm now communicated that another due payment accounting for of 18K from "Celtic Renewables" is also not going to be paid. Is anybody from the government investigating here? How is it possible that Abundance is still trading? Hello..???

Hi,

We are sorry to hear that two of your investments have had to be restructured. If you would like to discuss the performance of your investments and their current status, please contact our support team either by email (support@abundanceinvestment.com) or by phone (0203 475 8666) so we can identify your account and the investments you hold.

When an investment is restructured it means that the original terms of the investment have been changed. An investment may be restructured if the company that borrowed the money is unable to meet the original repayment terms, however, the terms of the investment can only be changed with the agreement of investors (holding 75% or more of the investment). A restructured investment can still repay all of your original investment and a return, but the risks may have changed. Please contact Abundance directly if you would like more details about the revised terms of your investments.

Abundance is an investment platform and there are risks with all the investments we offer on the platform, including the risk that you could lose some or all of your money and there are no guarantees to your return. We make this very clear before you make any investment on Abundance, including an Offer Document for each open investment that gives further details about the risks for that particular investment. We require all investors to confirm they understand the risks before investing as well as requiring all investors to complete an appropriateness test before they make their first investment which tests their knowledge and understanding of the risks.

On Abundance we have offered investments with a range of risk and return, from 4.5% to 15%. In total 40 investments have been funded on Abundance since we launched in 2012. The nature of investing means there are always risks involved - however when things do go wrong we will always work hard to support the company in its efforts to achieve the best possible outcome for investors.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss further, please get in touch on 0203 475 8666 or support@abundanceinvestment.com.

Abundance is a wonderful platform

Abundance is a wonderful platform, i have invested with them for a few years now and always been impressed by their approach and service. Overall my individual investments are on track, but in the odd investment where things have not gone to plan, Abundance has been incredibly proactive - keeping me informed and working to support the underlying companies get back on track, because of this though there has been some tough moments i have not lost any money. I started investing with Abundance knowing there was risk, but I want to use my money to help create new sustainable uk business - so Abundance is perfect!

BEWARE..

I have placed my hard earned money in four of abundance investments.
GDFC has now collapsed and is now called Allium Lending Group leaving me with worthless warrants that i cant sell unless at a huge loss unless at some later date the company is sold and i may be able to recoup some of my money.
Celtic Renewables Grangemouth is now under restructuring after losing their funding from the government. This was due to pay out at the end of the year so who knows what will happen to my money with this one.
I don't think i will be investing any more money in abundance as its too risky and am crossing my fingers that my other two investments don't go the same way.

Hi Kenneth,

Abundance is a solid all round…

Abundance is a solid all round platform. Good technology and customer service and investments that I can not get access to anywhere else. Abundance creates some proper diversification in my overall portfolio. Only gripe is that there is not enough projects coming onto the primary market. Increase the project flow and the platform would be perfect.
