Discovering & using Amblyoplay as an…

Discovering & using Amblyoplay as an adult has dramatically improved my vision & FAR exceeded my expectations.

I learned to read aged 3 but it soon became apparent that I had great difficulty with any ball games as I couldn't judge distance. A school sight test revealed I had one strong long-sighted eye & a very weak short-sighted one. 1970s glasses, patches & frequent trips to the opthalmologist up to age 16 didn't really make a difference. At school, I found I could read words upside down, back to front & vertically (I now realise it was all about the shapes) but was hopeless with maths (which requires correct digit-by-digit accuracy, which wasn't possible as eye's didn't focus together). In adolescence & adulthood I suffered with visual disturbance, migraines, neck & shoulder strain - not really helped by a career in editing!

Over time, my weaker right eye increasingly turned outwards, which looked weird & shattered my confidence, exacerbated by the thick convex balancing lens. The introduction of varifocal & thinner lenses was a significant improvement, but I was still hampered with judging distance & reading comfortably. The impact has got worse now the world has switched from passwords to pin numbers or codes & phone numbers. Even worse, all of these are now being presented as a string of (usually tiny) digits without any breaks, which puts me at a great disadvantage. Not to mention frustration.

Completely unrelated to this, my son chose optometry as a degree. On an open day he discovered that computer programmes have been developed to help children with amblyopia. I had assumed it was a rare condition but is obviously far more common now. Not one for the shooting-based games, while looking for alternatives, I am very grateful to have discovered Amblyoplay.
The programme’s exercises are based on standard (retro) games, including Tetris, Crossy Road, Flappy Bird, Catch the Birdie, Maze, Collect Shapes, Catch Monsters, Planets etc, all of which require specific eye movements. Regular Amblyoplay email articles explain how each helps and shares easily explained research. Unused to computer games I did need teenage help, as well as the tutorials, but have now honed my skills and settled on favourite games, based on challenge + enjoyment.

The best part for someone non-competitive like me is that progress is entirely from your results, rather than external league tables. Amblyoplay does also provide for other family members, with stand-alone games that children & grandchildren can play alongside, to make it more fun. Daily sessions comprise 3 varied games & 2 standard eye movement exercises; a 20-minute break; then another 3 games & 2 exercises. Unexpectedly, the hour of time-out from life that these sessions bring has become immensely beneficial & important to me in terms of mental health. It’s rare to be able to be so self-absorbed with a positive activity: A real added bonus - as long as I turn the programme’s sound off! Though, some evenings it’s a rush to ensure the session is completed before midnight. If it overruns, the programme records the session as being on the following day, which can prevent sessions until the day after.

Improvement relies on regular use & the programme gives very helpful motivation from feedback after each session + weekly email summaries. The first tangible feedback for me was from the Brock String where I progressed from finding it impossible to see the coloured balls (even with my glasses that contain a prism), to seeing them very easily without glasses. An admission here: I also gain motivations & huge satisfaction from the rewards of personalising the series of characters along the way. NB: If you’re desperate to gain sufficient points to finish a character; this can be helped by relatives playing the stand-alone games!

After 11 months, my optician is very impressed & has now prescribed glasses that no longer exclude the weak eye, but use it.
Best of all, as my binocular vision has improved so much reading is easier, I no longer drop as many things, my eye & neck strain have reduced ….. AND my right eye looks straighter in the socket rather than drifting to the side. He’s now finding out more about Amblyoplay to recommend it to other patients – so hopefully a good result for the Amblyoplay team too.

THANK YOU TO THE AMBLYOPLAY TEAM FOR IMPROVING MY LIFE.

Effective and fun training

My 10 year old son has used Amblyoplay for 3 months, usually 5 times a week and his skills improved. He was not tires when reading anymore and had more motivation to play games involving the ball.
First I thought it was only playing games, but its actually difficult to stay focus and perform well. I tried myself some indovidual games when he finished the daily therapy. Anyway, I recommend it!

Fun and Designed Well

AmblyoPlay is a bright and fun program that demonstrates a great deal of research and consideration in its design. The games are varied and entertaining. My daughter struggled at first to figure some of them out, which led to some frustration. However, she now does well with them and stays focused throughout her sessions. We found it helpful to play a podcast or music while she does it to also keep her engaged. It's hard to tell fully how this has helped her vision, but we can see improvement and look forward to seeing what the eye doctor will say when she is done!

Not worth the money

It's fine - it's just not a £70/mo subscription.

Selling to adults is kind of a side business for them I think - there is no explanation anywhere on what the games are doing or training, and in some of them, you can see things with both eyes and some only with one - I don't know if this is a bug or if this is training strabismus - no idea.

When, as an adult, you invest time and money into something, you really want to know exactly what you're doing with that time and money, and I do like the games and I do see improvements (and a slight increase in diplopia which I assume to be temporary), but again I just don't know what I'm supposed to be training.

There's another exercise - I assume it's to train fusion; I say I assume because, again, there is no explanation or anything; you just do it - I don't really know what 'it' is either zero documentation or explanation anywhere other than the sentence that I assume is written for kids.

I would probably continue with it, but for that price, no way. There are cheaper things marketed towards adults out there.

P.S. If you can't fuse perfectly, that Tetris game is absolutely horrible, you can't see the pieces correctly.

Hi, Callan. Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback.

We understand the importance of clarity and detailed information, especially when investing time and money into vision therapy. We strive to provide comprehensive resources to help our users understand the purpose and benefits of each exercise. Our blog includes an extensive post that describes which visual skills are being trained for each AmblyoPlay game: https://www.amblyoplay.com/discover-the-power-of-amblyoplay-games-visual-skills-explained-by-every-activity/

We aimed to make the app as clean and user-friendly as possible, avoiding over-saturating users with too much information within the app itself.

Regarding the Tetris game, it is indeed designed to be challenging as it aims to train visual skills, especially saccades and spatial orientation. This difficulty is intentional, as it helps to push the boundaries of your visual abilities, which is an essential part of the training process.

If you find any of the games frustrating, you can turn them off in the menu. You can always return to these games when you feel your vision is improving and you are ready for the challenge. We want to ensure that your training experience is as positive and effective as possible, so we offer flexibility to meet your individual requirements.

If you have any further questions or need assistance, please feel free to contact our support team.

Best regards,
AmblyoPlay Team

I've been using Amblyoplay for my daughter to improve 3D vision

I've been using Amblyoplay for my Daughter in order to improve her 3D vision for a few months now and the experience was harmful.
It took me a long while to realize that she can see both colors (Red and Green) on her right eye (red lens) due to a bug in the game which made her use only her right eye instead of both (She was able to barely see red through the red lens, but still enough to see).
I spoke to support who admitted there is a bug and after I urged them that this is serious they returned and then said they did a full system check and I should recalibrate my screen which didn't make a difference.
Since then, I have been trying to contact support for a reply but they haven't answered me for a few weeks now.

What I am trying to say is that the research behind the idea of the game is promising but I think the software is not medical grade and a slight glitch will cause it not to improve your kids sight but it can also make your kids vision worse by using the stronger eye without noticing (it's kids).

So if you are using the game for you or your kids, I urge you as an adult to put the glasses and play for a few minutes each game, switching eyes and making sure that you can't see both colors in one eye (for me specifically the red lens).
Overall at this stage I would choose a proper medical program over this game.

Hi, Assaf. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your experience with AmblyoPlay.

We deeply regret to hear about the issues you and your daughter encountered.

However, we can guarantee that no matter which eye is worse or better, the eyesight will not worsen. AmblyoPlay works like gym for the eyes, where you train the binocular skills (tracking, saccades, peripheral awareness, eye-hand coordination, pursuits) unknowingly, with the advanced algorithm stimulating areas for improvement.

It is basically impossible for the training to have a negative effect. Even if the color calibration doesn't work perfectly for you, the training still simulates both eyes.

Thank you again for your constructive feedback and understanding.

Best regards,
AmblyoPlay Team

Excellent product by a customer centric company

The product appears to be thoughtfully designed and effective and in the way it challenges brain to use both eyes and get trained for eye convergence. The ease of getting required information made it easier to decide that this is a relevant product for my needs.
The dashboard for monitoring progress and training hours is user friendly and information rich. I have used customer support as well, and they seem to be very responsive. I plan to continue using Amblyoplay for a longer period for these reasons.

Wish there was an adult version of this and more games.

There are not many options out there for lazy eye therapy, so I am grateful there's something I can use. Unfortunately, there are even less options for adults. I try to make time during the week to do these games and do notice some change when I do them consistently...but it gets very repetitive. For the price you would think there would be new games every once in a while.

platform is a great for amblyopic/strabismic kids

Overall the platform is a great idea. They have helped me as an adult to re-gain some sight back in the amblyopic eye but due to the cost could not continue. Did manage to extend after a longer break though so will wait for the results now! For kids games are interesting, you have some colour adjusting setting etc co can eveb use different glasses in case original get broken. However for an adult it is repetitive and I would personally use in as an addition to vision therapy for any adult rather than relying this app itself will solve the problem. Overall rating is 4.5 as would love to see extra features like choosing the start level for games (for adults they are boring of are too easy) or maybe have some extra ones. The con is high cost. But red/green games, tranaglyphs etc this truly works!
