On opening the box, assembly and setting up the pickup arm was a doddle. I love the high gloss finish of the deck and uncluttered look making the pickup arm easy to operate and delight to use making it smooth and easy to guide the stylus accurately to the record. The ND3 cartridge Is fitted securely to a 3 point fixing on the headshell, nice one! After two weeks listening, first impression’s are positive. The ND3 cartridge sounds pretty impressive for a moving magnet, with Rega spending 10 yrs designing it may well pay them dividends considering the high cost of moving coils if your on a budget. It has a well balanced sound and presenting a wide stage and depth between the speakers. Lots more detail are also coming from my vinyl making it far more engaging to listen to with the musicians / bands virtually coming alive. It’s also given my faithful 37 year old Inca Tech The Claymore amp with a punchy sound a new lease of life, coupled to a pair of Wharfdale 9 speakers. It was advised 40yrs ago that if you are building a good sounding hifi on a budget, spend the most on the source, ie the turntable. As the saying use to go, garbage in garbage out, and it’s as true today as it was then. Five stars to Rega for a well engineered design and a classy looking deck that ultimately, creates a highly detailed and spatial sound way beyond it’s price, which is excellent news for me.
I’m no audiofile but I do have a keen ear and always go for what I think will be the best sound for my budget. The Rega Planar 2 with the nd3 cartridge has hit the sweet spot for me. It was at the limit of my budget but has made my vinyls sound so much better, everything has just come alive, so clear and detailed, a joy to listen to. I have a modest set up, I’m playing through a Denon AVC-X3800H receiver and Tannoy Mercury V1 speakers. I may go for a dedicated amp and upgrade my speakers one day but for now I’m happy.
