Extra insurance and deposi still not refunded

Last month, we hired a car via AutoEurope at Dryyve in Salzburg. At the pick-up point, we had to pay some kind of deposit of 199 euros and an additional insurance, despite the fact that we already had booked a full insurance with the reservation. When returning the car, the staff member of Dryyve checked the car and all was fine. So, we expected to get the deposit back in our account. Uptill now (more than 4 weeks later), we still haven't received the deposit and the customer service responds only very slowly. Personally I would recommend not to hire a car via this company but to hire the car at a competitor who offers full service (car + booking via 1 company) instead of via an intermediary such as AutoEurope.

Booking cancelled no update

I have booked a car on Sunday Dec 21 st at Berlin airport around 1 am for 5 days . I got a confirmation on the web that my payment went through and I should receive a voucher. To my utter horror, my booking was cancelled and there was no email update n the voucher I went to rental car agency next day to collect the car , and they mentioned no booking on my name. Tried calling Auto Europe hotline to be greeted by automated voice mail saying we are out off office hours. This was complete disgrace and the con job. I never expected Auto Europe of such low customer service standards. I will never book with them again in my life.

Works fine until you actually should get a refund.
I have used Auto Europe for many times and always been satisfied. Good price and easy booking.
Last time we had a damage on our rental car. We had to pay the invoice to the rental car company and created an insurance claim. It was handled quickly and we should get a refund within 15-20 working days. That in itself is ridiculous in 2025 but it has now been 30 days. Auto Europe is suddenly hard to get in touch with (you can't call about a done reservation) and they didn't aswer my lasy email at all.

Double charging

I have booked a car in the US for 25 days for October 2025. The rental price has immediatelly deducted from my credit card in May. After I picked up the car I have found out that an addional amount of over 1700 USD has been taken from my credit card. I have not received any explanation, no bill, no receipt. After at least 15 Mails this completely unjustified withdrawal has , after 5 weeks, not been returned and also no clear answer been given. Answers are computer generated answers, the phone numbers given and mentioned on the voucher do not exist. There is in fact no customer support. I give it another 10 days, thereafter i need to take legal steps.

Forced to buy insurance I didn’t need

I booked a rental car through CHECK24 / Auto Europe (Drive on Holidays, Faro).
At pickup, the car was only released after I purchased an additional insurance (“Excess Reduction”), since the rental company required a €1,500 deposit which couldn’t be blocked on my card.
The booking already included full coverage with zero excess.
Customer service was polite but declined any goodwill refund.
Overall okay, but the process felt unfair and not transparent for customers with limited credit limits.

bad experiences

I purchased my rental through AutoEurope.it, confident I was relying on a reliable and transparent intermediary, but unfortunately my experience was anything but positive.
During my last rental, on August 29, 2025, at 9:00 PM at Zaventem Airport (Brussels), at the Europcar counter I was forced to purchase additional assistance insurance for €109.94 simply because I would also be driving in the Netherlands. I was clearly told that without this insurance I would not be able to pick up the car, even though I had already purchased full insurance coverage on AutoEurope.it.
After my trip, I contacted AutoEurope, but instead of helping me resolve the issue, they simply replied that I had signed the contract, ignoring the fact that I was forced to do so in order to pick up the vehicle.
This isn't the first time this has happened: for a previous rental, in November 2024, after booking through AutoEurope.it, I was charged €40 more at the Europcar counter for an additional driver than expected. Only after insisting did I get a refund.
Overall, AutoEurope doesn't really protect its customers when problems arise with partner companies. They simply act as an intermediary and, in effect, leave the customer completely on their own.
A terrible experience: I strongly advise against using them.

Contract Breach, Fraudulent Delays & Privacy Violations – No Refund for Weeks

I am writing this review to warn others: Auto Europe Deutschland GmbH has failed to honour my legitimate claim for a refund (EUR 380.83, Booking #22624754 / Ticket #4601054) and has instead engaged in stalling tactics.

My experience:

I submitted all required documents (rental agreement, payment proof, invoices, photos) multiple times, in line with Auto Europe’s own rules.

Despite this, the company kept demanding full bank statements showing sensitive personal data — an unlawful request and a clear violation of GDPR.

Several deadlines have passed. I received no refund, no valid explanation, and only repeated generic responses.

This conduct amounts to breach of contract, fraud, and a severe breach of trust.

What I expect:

Immediate reimbursement of the full amount owed, with no further delay or unlawful demands. I have already escalated the matter legally, filed complaints with consumer protection and data protection authorities, and will pursue all available remedies.

Warning to other customers:

Be very cautious. If you rely on Auto Europe’s “excess refund insurance,” document everything carefully and be prepared for legal escalation. Their current practices show serious risks for customers.

Impossible to contact

We had an issue with our booking when we went to collect the car, and have not been able to get in touch with Autoeurope at all. The number leads to an automated option, which does not work and then we get hung up on. There is no other way to contact them.

nothing but blame deflection

The customer service says I got scammed by Europcar in Dublin and there's nothing they can do on their end. As far as I'm concerned, this isn't acceptable. Either they're cooperating with scammers or Auto Europe are the scammers themselves. At no point was anybody willing to take responsibility for them charging me 2x what I had originally booked for, quite apart from the hours I've spent dealing with these two companies sending me around in circles, each deflecting blame from themselves to the other.

Scam Alert!!

Scam Alert!!

I rented a car on the AutoEurope website and bought all the insurance. But when we went to the airport to get the car, they said you have to do more insurance, which will cost over 200€ otherwise, we don't give you the car. So we didn't take it, of course (because when I was renting the car I already paid for full insurance, there was no more insurance to buy). They said okay we cancel the contract, Auto Europe may cut 10-20€, but the rest will be almost fully refunded. So I called Auto Europe. They told me to send an email. I sent it. I sent e-mails 5 times, and in a week, I got no answer. Auto Europe is a scam. I complained them everywhere, now I am dealing with all this bureaucracy to get back my own money that they tried to rob!

[UPDATE]

Auto Europe publicly replied here, claiming that they are just a broker and the local supplier refused to give the car due to extra insurance.

This is unacceptable. I paid Auto Europe directly. The voucher included full insurance.

They are now hiding behind the local company and refusing to refund me.
I have filed complaints with:
- DGCCRF (France)
- ECC-Net France
- EU ODR Platform
- UFC Que Choisir
- My bank (chargeback)

This is a warning to all future customers.

Reply from Auto Europe Deutschland GmbH

Dear Mr. Hazal Hatip,

We are truly sorry to hear about the frustrating experience you had with your recent car rental and the subsequent difficulties with our customer service. We understand your disappointment and the feeling of being misled, and for that, we sincerely apologise.

We've conducted an internal review of your case, and unfortunately, we see that our Customer Service team has already addressed your refund request. We understand their response was not what you hoped for, and we regret any distress this has caused.

We want to clarify the situation from our perspective as a broker. While you purchased insurance through the Auto Europe website, this typically refers to a third-party excess reimbursement policy. When you arrived at the rental counter, the local car hire company would have offered their own insurance products, which are separate from any third-party policies you might have purchased. These additional insurances, while optional, are often presented by the local supplier to reduce your liability or excess directly with them.

We understand the local supplier may have indicated that you would receive a near-full refund. However, our records indicate that our Customer Service team was unable to proceed with a refund request because, from the rental company's standpoint, there was no proof to substantiate your claim regarding an offer of additional insurance or a refusal to provide the vehicle. Furthermore, the local rental company operates under a strict "No Refund" policy in such circumstances.

As Auto Europe acts solely as a broker between you and the local car hire company, our ability to intervene in disputes once the rental has been declined at the counter is very limited. The direct contract for the car rental is between you and the local supplier. We rely on their terms and conditions, and without their agreement or evidence to support a claim against their stated policies, we are unfortunately unable to force a refund on their behalf. We understand this can feel incredibly unfair, and we sympathise with your position.

We deeply regret that this has led to such a negative experience and that you feel your money has been taken unfairly. We assure you this was not our intention. We understand this explanation may not change the outcome, but we hope it clarifies why we are unable to take further action in this specific instance.

We sincerely apologise again for the distress and inconvenience this has caused you.

Sincerely,

The Auto Europe Team

Worst experience ever!

Worst experience ever!
We booked our rental car to pick up from Olbia airport with Auto Europe, the vendor was Gold Car. They did not accept my driver's license even though it was valid. They told me that they need a European/international driving license. However, this information was not shared with us when we did the booking on the website.

If you are coming outside of Europe, do not rent a car from them. The call center did not pick up the phone for 10-15 minutes straight. We called them multiple times until we got hold of them. Even though I could not get the rental car, they did not refund me either. They said they cannot refund me as this was stated somewhere unreadable on the voucher. They did not even try to help out or cancel the booking either; they said you can only do it 48 hours before. I did not know this was going to happen, so what do you expect? Scammers.

We went on and rented out another car easily with no hustle at the airport by another provider. So STAY AWAY!!!

Unresponsive and dismissive of our…

Unresponsive and dismissive of our accident. No refund was issued, and they refused to investigate the faulty claim report by Hertz. Not recommending.

Last month, my friend and I booked a car through Auto Europe Deutschland GmbH. The car was picked up at the Hertz dealership at the Zurich Airport. After one day of usage, the car signaled problems with the engine, due to which, we had to stop the car immediately on the side of the road and had it towed. Despite our requests, Hertz was not able to provide us with a replacement as the accident happened on Saturday, and the following day all of their offices would be closed. We were promised a full refund for the car and the situational public transport fees, but had to file the claim through Auto Europe Deutschland GmbH. We provided screenshots, pictures, and other substantial accident documentation to Auto Europe. However, we were told that Hertz claimed that a car replacement was not requested, thus a refund was not possible. This was certainly not true and could be proved by the documentation we provided to Auto Europe.

It's been now more than a month, and Auto Europe refuses to respond to us and escalate the investigation with Hertz. Clearly, Auto Europe does not value its customers enough to investigate the faulty claims made by Hertz. Our claim was handled by Luisa at Auto Europe.

Dear Mr. Harutyunyan,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention and we sincerely apologize for the frustration and inconvenience you have experienced.

We want to clarify that Auto Europe Deutschland GmbH acts as a broker, connecting customers with car rental suppliers like Hertz. While we facilitate the booking process and assist with claims, the direct investigation and decisions regarding refunds are ultimately handled by the rental supplier.

Following your report, we did conduct an internal investigation and subsequently received a response from Hertz. According to their investigation, their internal colleagues confirmed that an exchange for the vehicle was not requested at the time of the incident as reported, and therefore, a refund has not been authorized by them.

As a broker, the speed of responses and the outcome of investigations are often dependent on the supplier's processes and timelines. We understand this can be frustrating, and we work diligently to follow up with our partners to obtain information and resolutions for our customers.

As communicated to you on the 15th of this month, 'We are currently investigating the matter which you have brought to our attention and shall be in contact with you via email as soon as we have further information.' This remains our commitment, and we are actively working to understand Hertz's findings and explore any possible avenues for resolution based on the documentation you provided.

We understand your disappointment and want to assure you that we take your feedback seriously. The Customer Service Team will continue to pursue this matter with Hertz on your behalf and will update you via email as soon as we have further information.

Sincerely,

The Auto Europe Team

Autoeurope accepted Budget's deceit!

I had a Budget car rented through Autoeurope in Frankfurt am Main in Nov-Dec 2024. Upon returning the car, I was informed that bill had increased by about 200 €! After very long investigations and email sendings, the outcome was that part of the sum was due to missing fuel and additional insurances. Fortunately, I had photos of the fuel meter. When I got the car the fuel tank was half full. So, I returned the car with some gas more in the tank than there was upon getting the car. Initially, the renter informed that my photos are invalid! When protesting, they agreed that had made a "mistake", and I get some money back. But I never got back money from the insurances that I HAD NOT agreed to take. My acceptance for the insurances was a plain deceit. I'm very disappointed with Autoeurope, as it turned out to be at the scammer's side!
Feb 14, 2025 After finally finding Budget's email address, I got their answer I've today responded to. Now, I wait what they tell me. If I'm not satisfied with the answer I turn once more to AutoEurope.
Feb 25, 2025 I didn't get any response from Budget even though I was asked for information which I sent. Now, I contacted again AutoEurope through the link above. I just got confirmation that my message was received. It is a question of the EXTRA insurance which I didn't ask or approve. I can confirm that I signed the contract. However, no word was said to me about getting an extra insurance! It is just a deceit!
March 1, 2025 I got the same answer as previously from AutoEurope: They deny their responsibility to the fraud. Therefore, I repeat here the facts: 1. I was never aware that extra insurances by Budget were added to the rental. 2. I was never shown or told that the rental sum was increased. The total expenses were not shown to me. Therefore, it didn’t occur to me that the rental price was increased by about 200 € (initially also containing the fraud with missing gasoline in the tank). 3. I was never shown the terms of the extra insurances. Therefore, I am badly disappointed to both Budget Germany and AutoEurope EU.
ONE MORE thing, the increase in the rent was added upon the RETURN of the car. An employee just mentioned of it to me when I was in a hurry for the plane. Perhaps I thought it was a mistake. So, I couldn't be aware of it and I didn't accept it at the time the rental began.

Review: Scam - Stay away from this company!

Review:

Auto Europe Germany scammed me out of €84 by adding an insurance policy I never requested. When I picked up the car, they told me the deposit was only for the gasoline. However, they later refunded only part of my deposit, keeping €84 for the unauthorized insurance. I asked for clarification, but they failed to provide any proof or explanation. Their practices are misleading and dishonest. Stay away from this company!

Dear Mrs. Sanchez Garcia,

Thank you very much for your review. We are very sorry to hear that your car rental with Centauro was not to your satisfaction. You had informed us that you were charged an extra insurance.

Please let us first get the facts straight: Auto Europe is a car hire agency. In our booking system, clients can compare, choose and book the car rental offers from various rental car suppliers all over the world. The car rental contract is signed between the supplier and the client on site at the car rental station with the car rental agents; in the event of disputes between the two contractual partners, i.e. you and your car supplier Centauro, our customer service team can mediate.

You complained to our customer service team about an extra, charged on site with Centauro and requested a refund of this charge. When contacting your provider, our customer service team was informed that you had purchased an insurance product of Centauro, which is specified as ‘Smart Cover’ in the rental agreement. By doing so, you accept the provider's General Terms and Conditions, which you confirm by signing the contract. As an agent, it is not possible for us to understand in retrospect what agreement you made with the car hire company on site. After signing a contract, we can no longer contest it. The rental agreement signed on site is legally binding, the additional insurance has been utilized and will not be refunded retroactively.

As with any other contract, a car hire agreement should be read and understood by the customer before signing. As a customer, you naturally have the right to read the contract before you sign when picking up the car at the rental counter, regardless of whether it is presented to you in paper form or digitally on a pad. If there are any questions, these should be discussed immediately, and any misunderstanding should be clarified with the car hire company's staff. If there is still anything unclear, our reservation team can be reached directly by telephone.

We regret that we are unable to help you in this case.

Yours sincerely

Don't hope to get help from this company if something goes wrong with your booking

I had booked a convertible but when I arrived at the airport I was told that there was no convertible available.
When I contacted autoeurope, they told me that they couldn't help and that I could to file a complaint only after the end of the booking.
Back home I filed a complaint and received a compensation of 40 EUR on a 900 EUR booking for a car I did not receive.
During the whole process, autoeurope did not answer my emails.

Dear Alain,

Thank you for your review. We are very sorry that your supplier did not provide you with the convertible you booked and we apologise to you for the poor service.

As far as the contractual situation is concerned, we would like to explain the situation:
We are a car hire agency, which means that you had chosen in the comparison platform of Billiger-Mietwagen.de the car hire offer of your supplier in our booking system, the voucher was sent to you and the rental price was forwarded to the supplier. You entered into the rental contract with the supplier on site; in the event of a dispute between the two contractual partners, i.e. you and the rental company, we can only mediate.

As we can see in the booking system, the case has now been closed and you have also received a refund from your supplier.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to you.

Yours sincerely
