Deeply disappointing experience. We booked a car in Rhodes city centre, but when we checked Google Maps, the agency was actually located 2km from the airport — no city centre location at all. We... See more

Even one star is too much 😡
Even one star is too much for this company. We rented a car this month at Chania airport with full insurance, right from the start the gentleman blocked over €500 on the card, of course explaining that €300 would be refunded after returning the car, and the whole €500 was refunded, only that 4 days later an invoice came for €455 and the company without any explanation where such an astronomical amount took the money from the account, of course all attempts at contact are impossible, logging in to the website to download the full invoice as well. Avoid this company.
I rented a car from Denmark going to Crete
I rented a car from Denmark before going on a trip to Crete.
Fist problem is that Greece and Denmark operate with different CAR GROUPS. In Denmark a group G car is a premium family car and in Greece is just a medium SUV.
That of course wondered me - but at the rental office in the airport of Chania they almost accused me of lying. “All groups are the same all over the world” - not true - check and see that groups are different from one country to the other.
Well instead of that premium car I expected I left the airport with a totally scratched Nissan that already went 70000 km as a rental car ! And as it showed a litttle later a defect gearbox.
When we arrived at the hotel I called “Road assistance “ and told them about the weird sounds from the gearbox- and they send a mechanic who picked up the car.
After that experience I called the office in the airport of Chania to ask for a replacement car….
Here the gentleman I talked to accused me of having destroyed the car and told me that “Gearbox was not covered by the insurance and other “funny remarks” .
But worse - if I wanted a replacement I should come my self to the airport and pick it up.
I am only here 3 days with my family- and I really have better things to do than run around after replacement cars - because AVIS has chosen to rent out old wracks.
It is simply not good enough - I would as minimum have expected and excuse from the office and the replacement car delivered to my hotel.
Back up ?? What back up
We had a pre booked Avis car a 5y/o Citron 85 Km on clock !!!! after first night a flat battery , jump started , again battery fails in middle of traffic lights still waiting for call back we hired a battery pack and jump started I took it back and the mechanic tried to jump start and crossed terminals I rest my case one star is one too many I would not pay them in washers . We were then give a 4yo Yaris which had gear change issues just poor poor tat
very bad experience
very bad experience. Staff at reception very bad, overbilling everything goes after the rental. You receive invoices for options already paid at the time of booking. Everything is good to take money.
Be prepared to block your credit card…
Be prepared to block your credit card upon delivering your car with Avis. They will surely charge you non existing /ghost fees that were not agreed when signing the contract or where hidden in the small letters. The only means of questioning and fighting against these fees is through a ludicrous online and offline system designed exclusively to refrain the client from retrieving their money.
Avoid Avis by any means possible
Please Avoid - worst customer service
Hired a car which was too small asked for assistance and was given keys to larger car by very helpful staff, we signed no additional documentation nor did the staff discuss any further charges which we thought was unusual but that they were just being incredibly helpful and providing excellent service. That was not the case!! We returned the car after 2 weeks and they immediately charged us €500 which when we queried why as there was no mention of extra money required when they gave us the keys then both members of staff who dealt with us initially upon collection turn on us and were then absolutely vile and incredibly rude, blaming us, calling us liars, saying they’d never made any mistakes before in 8 years working there, saying they’d told us it would cost more, saying we were tired and confused from our flight and then they simply ignored us. I don’t dispute that we had an upgraded car that clearly would cost more but we were not given all the information by these Avis representatives so we couldn’t make an informed decision about accepting the larger car. Had we had know we would’ve made a different choice as €500 was very expensive. In the end we paid but please be aware of this as they are not to be trusted and if they do make a mistake they will not admit it and blame you and you will be left with a hefty bill and will have had to experience some of the worst customer service from any company.
Shockingly unacceptable corporate…
Shockingly unacceptable corporate behaviour. I attempted to purchase the car I had been leasing for years, based on the terms and conditions of the leasing contract, but encountered inexplicable delays and the complete indifference of the employees handling the transaction. Case in point, they would not share the vehicle's maintenance history, even after I had attempted to contact them on numerous occasions. Truly disgraceful for a company of its size.
Avis Corfu Airport
It has been 78 days since this company should have returned 90 euros for advance payment of fuel for 2 cars. The deal was that if you return the full tank on the last rental day, your advanced payment will be repayed. No answer from them nor the explanation.
Stay away from this scamming company!
Misleading rental proposals
Rented a Mercedes Vito 9 seater from AVIS,
Got an Opel Vivaro from BUDGET.
On the AVIS website the Mercedes has a value 25% above the Opel on the BUDGET website…
For these guys it’s the same…
We really don’t share the same values of comfort, service and correct business.
I’ll never come back to AVIS (neither BUDGET), that’s clear !
Horrible experience
Horrible experience. Rude people that mistreated me, charging 124 euro, more than the price of the rental for a week, for a supposed torned gum below the front mask. Something that is not possible to see during the check in. Notice that I had full protection, so supposedly they should not charge me, but strangely their policy was to take my money and then ask me to apply for a refund to a foreign company. Other than this ridiculous policy, the two women working there, Katerina and Angelika, are extremely rude. They speak and write horrible English, refuse to correct it on the documents when one makes them notice that it is incorrect, and tried to write that the mask of the car was cracked (a lie, I had to make pictures to protect the truth!), and finally asked to sign an accident report form in blank! All full of "malakia" and other insults in Greek that they think people do not understand. Really a place to avoid, if you do not want to be mistreated and scanned.
Don´t rent from this place
Don´t rent from this place. Thessaloniki office is doing anything to charge you extra fees. They missinform, they will not answer on your e-mails or phonecalls. Worst experience with a rental-car company.
Go with another firm.
Just complete i d i o t s
AVIS man said he will charge me 400 euro. He found an old car damage report paper inside the car, in which no damage was reported. He asked which report paper shall he take, the new or the old one. Nothing charged afterall, wanted only to scare me. Just complete i d i o t s and silly morons at AVIS. Never again!
Very good and helpful staff
Rented an Audi Got a Fiat
Hi avis
I had rented an Audi A3 (Or simmular) In parga. When i arrived to the shop, they tried to give an Fiat tipo and told me it was simmular to the car i had rented?!? At the shop, they told me, that the two cars are very alike (i highly doubt that) and Think i payed for a german quality car and you tried to give me one which are Way cheaper!
I am really glad i didnt pay for the mercedes (or simmular)!!!
Your slogan is Avis - we try harder, but you really should try again!
Avis Athens Airport - stay away
Arrived at Athens airport and rented for 16 days the most expensive ride (Land Rover Discovery). Asked the agent if it is possible to leave a credit card for preauthorisation and to pay with a different debit card at the end, he said "Yes sir, of course!" with a smile. Brought the car back and got a bitter face saying "It's impossible, sorry..."
Sent email about the matter to customer support and didn't even get an answer.
Beware of them, tourists trap wrapped in a global brand.
The worse experience
I got charged approximately 100 euro extra after returning the car, still without knowing the reason.
I have tried several times to contact them by mail and phone without any luck. They told me two months ago that they will come as soon as possible back to me with a solution. It has been now 3 months from the rental.
It is definitely the worse experience with a rental company that I had so far.
Not recommended.
Avis Thessaloniki Practically Off Site "On Airport" Car Hire
I rented in Thessaloniki Greece Feb 2020. All car hire in this place is cheap, I could have paid on average 20-25GBP in total for Mon-Friday in winter. I chose Avis thinking it would be a better quality car, and experience, for 50GBP. I was wrong.
On airport parking still required a minibus, so it was another advantage removed.
The Car had many scratches and chips and was about 4 years old. So it took a long time to add to your sheet of problems, wasting time and giving me a feeling of "I wonder if I recorded all scratches before I left" so as a customer you can't relax and enjoy the car hire. Although they say "we don't worry about those small things" half of the small items were marked on the condition report, and there are lots of bad reviews about scratch charges after hiring, so you want to add them.
After booking Avis website advised me on the thank you page I need to bring 2 utility bills, there were more requirements than a mortgage application or opening a bank account. I don't have two, due to how I rent, which turned out I don't need for my destination. So Avis wasted more of my time. They should better customize a transaction thank you pages based on each hire destination (easy to do with IT) to not waste customers time. Avis prices were double the price of all but Sixt and Hertz competitors, but I chose Avis as I thought the quality of their cars was higher, I was wrong.
Avis website and marketing all told me to install the app so I can even choose the available car, I could not, it just shows the booking. I was not given upgrade options or live car selection until I reached the airport, even when I checked the app on the day and on arrival, so don't bother with their app people.
No priority line for 'Avis Prefered'. It was no quicker, and there was no advantage. This is just a fancy term to get you signed up to their newsletter, and to make you think you have some privileges. You don't, at least in Greece.
The upgrade offer at the airport (despite low season) was much more expensive than if I selected that car online before I booked. I did not take it, as I remember looking at the Mercedes option for 90 GBP online, so I did not upgrade for 20+ euros per day.
Returning the car I was given no signoff paper to say everything is fine, no confident statement like "all good!" or even "no problem". Even now, as the customer, I continue to have a feeling of "is something going to come back to bit me". It's especially annoying as the pre-authorized my card with fuel surcharges etc... As a customer little is done to give confidence and to help us relax pre-rental, at the point of hire, or after the hire. Why not give the customer, all is good card or some document.
I suggest Avis HQ can work a lot of the customer experience, to apply phycology and soft touches that make us customers feel relaxed. You don't need more IT more tech, just some scripts or a "all is well" card to give customers. I don't think anyone in the company has put themselves in the customers' position. It would cost nothing but policy changes and staff training to transform a customers experience.
In summary, I can not see any benefit to select Avis over unknown car hire brands that would be an extra 5-minute minibus transfer compared to Avis. Since Avis Prefered Customers (which I am one) and Payless and Budget are all the same brand, and so the same line at the same desk, there is no advantage from selecting Avis, even if Payless Car Hire is 1 pound cheaper, choose that or any car hire. Avis prices were double the price of all but Sixt and Hertz competitors, but I chose Avis as I thought the quality of their cars was higher, I was wrong.
Your car hire is only as good as the person handing over and handing back the car. Ignore brands and reviews, go for the low price always, and get your own car hire excess insurance, but top tip.. get one that covers internal fabric damage, as many exclude it, and once I had shopping leak on the seats :(
Using the established industry players makes sense
Ordered a Mercedes A class at the airport in Ioannina and the sweet employee upgraded me to a Nissan Qashqai after hearing about a bad experience with another car company (rentalcars.com / greenmotion). The car worked wonderfully and I ended up having it almost a week. No issues and an overall flawless experience.
Excellent customer service assistance
Excellent service from beginning of contract hire to return of the car. They exceed my expectations from the beginning in terms of cuatro service assistance being prompt with my requirements and even upgrading me on collection without raising the price of the deal locked at time of booking. The car was was very good and when I returned it I thought I had lost my passport at the airport when I suddenly received a call from the company saying they had fund my passport in between the car seats and promptly delivered it back to me at the airport. I thought they were very good at making sure the customer was fully satisfied.
Better than Sixt not a great…
Better than Sixt not a great endorsement and they aren't exactly hard to beat however these guys came through thanks
