Brilliant dental practice. Dr Myatt is exceptional.

Brilliant dental practice. Dr Catherine Myatt and the team are always exceptional. I went in yesterday with a badly broken tooth that had left a gaping hole in my gum. Not the easiest of teeth to take out, especially as I understand it had three roots and one was curved so stubborn. Dr Myatt is so patient and careful. Explaining everything as she goes along. It took quite a while, but in the end it was all out and I expected to suffer some pain today being the day after in view of the complexity of the procedure. Instead I slept like a lamb and now all feels absolutely fine. Thank you yet again to Dr Myatt and all of the team.

Excellent

Have had the final and most important part for me, a dental implant finished today and am really happy with the results. I’ve had no problems or pain throughout. Ashley is so good at explaining every step and is very good at what he does. All other staff are lovely.I’d be very happy to recommend this dental practice. Michelle

Outstanding dental practice

When I started going to Balsall Common Dental Practice, I had a lot of problems. I had had my original veneers (first fitted on eight of my front teeth 20 years ago) replaced by my previous dental practice and they kept falling off. I switched to Balsall Common DP, and Cath, my dentist there has been brilliant. She has replaced my top veneers with crowns, changed the shape of my bite by building up the back of my incisors, thereby taking pressure off the crowns and replacing one of my lower veneers that was a different shape and colour to match the rest. Cath is like a highly skilled structural engineer for teeth. The hygienist team at Balsall Common are also fantastic and the whole philosophy of the practice is preventative. My teeth and gums are in a better shape now than they have been for years.

Staff are quite nice, but...

Staff are quite nice, but the principal dentist is unpleasant and I found him to be arrogant and condescending. On one occasion he filled a tooth, he left an edge which he had to rectify. On visiting the surgery to have this fixed, there was no apology for the inconvenience or any admission of a mistake, just 'don't worry, there's no charge,' which was just as well, as I had no intention paying another penny. Another time, he tried to tell me that my well-controlled type 2 diabetes would lead to all manner of dental problems, which my GP dismissed as nonsense and the dentist I visited subsequently (and continue to visit) told me there was no real evidence to support that. I'm sure this individual at Balsall Common is otherwise very good at what he does, but lacks manners. Other patients may feel different, but was not a great experience for me and I never went back. I've recently had an implant to replace a long-term crown where the root had failed and three dentists did the necessary work, including my now regular dental surgeon. They were real people, charming, caring, highly professional and incredibly good at their work. Its a pleasure to visit them. If you have to pay for dental treatment, there are far superior alternatives to Balsall Common Dental.

Passive/aggressive and intimidating

Awful experience for a very simple procedure. I suffer from bruxism, which means I grind my teeth when I sleep. I previously went to this practice years ago and saw the same dentist, and was given a good product and relatively mediocre service.

This time around, I went for a new mouth guard, the dentist ordered the wrong one, it was so flimsy and was more of a cheap retainer than an actual bruxism guard. I had to make the 30-mile round trip again, as the dental impression was also smashed when delivered.

He made some excuses and retook the impression, came across as slightly passive/aggressive but I brushed it off.

This time around, the guard was better quality but did not fit, it ripped into my gums when I put them on. I called again, scheduled another appointment, this time for an adjustment.

He spent 20 mins rectifying it, and throughout, I felt intimidated in asking for some recourse, as this was my second journey there to rectify, 60-mile round trip (over 2 trips) and almost 3 hours in journey and time spent there unnecessarily.

I then picked up the courage to ask, but I already knew the answer, as he was so dismissive the last time, he said he will give me two options, one take the mouth guard and throw it in the bin and give a refund or two, accept that this is the process and that the readjustments were free! He came across as more aggressive than passive this time. I just left.

I went there 3 times, there was one readjustment but both times, it was their fault, so it doesn't matter if it's free, you are rectfying a problem that you caused!

I was thinking of getting a dental implant there before all this debacle and spoke about the options, luckily, I realised that he couldn't even admit to a small mistake, let alone trusting him with my £2400 implant and then have him be in denial if anything went wrong. Plus his nature was not friendly, he's a big guy, so he's already uncomfortable to be around when he's not happy.

All in all, a place to avoid!
