Atrocious from the get go

Atrocious from the get go. Went into a branch to set up a savings account and was asked a load of irrelevant personal questions during the set up process.. unprofessional and I felt obliged to answer them at the time. Chased up my account for weeks and kept being given excuses from the agent who was meant to be setting it up. Chased it up for months over the phone with the call centre. 4/5 months later the account was finally set up. Found out I would only be able to do cash withdrawals even though I had been told I would be able to make transfers in and out of the account, so it wasn’t fit for my purpose anymore. Chased it up over the phone for weeks, they kept saying someone would ring me back.. they never did. Every time I rang they didn’t know why I couldn’t do transfers. Eventually a phone operative told me it’s because my account had been set up after October that year. At that point I gave up, only to later notice I initially went in to set up the account in early March and the account wasn’t set up for me until end of July.. before October!! Made 1 transfer to the account in 3 years and 1 withdrawal a few months after it. Had €25 left in the account. Keep getting asked to send proof of my employment despite not even using the account. Have had accounts with permanent tsb for over 15 years have never been hassled for anything and no other BOI customer I know gets hassled like this. Then they blocked my account so I can’t take out my €25 now without even more hassle with them. Beyond shocking, I thought a bank would be professional and efficient. Would never be able to recommend this crowd. It would be 0 stars only for the fact one of my local branches has very polite staff. Another hopeless experience with this crowd: a family member sent money to my permanent tsb account from their bank of Ireland current account. Months passed and there was no sign of the money. He rang them to sort it out within those months and they kept saying they’d fixed it but it was never fixed. Eventually he made a formal complaint and at that point they sent the money but then sent him a letter saying he owed them a huge overdraft which he didn’t and there was no record of it when he logged into his bank account… he’s also had terrible trouble accessing the app and when he rings up about it they tell him someone will ring him back about it and they never do.. absolutely nothing but hardship

Stay away for mortgage

Stay away for mortgage
Worst bank ever, especially for mortgage. They were very quick in the beginning of the process, trying to get new customers, now our application is ridiculously delayed. It's been a month since we submitted the last documentation and we have to keep calling to know what's going on. We call, they ask to wait 48h, nothing happens, we call again, they find an issue dated prior to the first call that was never informed to us via call or the website, then, it was actually a mistake from their bot that couldn't read the information on the doc, was no one took 1 minute to check the document!!! Ok, we submitted again, the bot accepted this time (same doc btw), have to wait another 48h, nothing happens, we have to call again..... Anyway, our application is obviously forgotten, there's no one checking and passing on, now it's been 2 weeks iddle. NOTHING!!

Even though we are at the end of the process, we are starting a new application with a different mortgage provider. I believe it will be quicker!

Also, I'm not longer transferring my funds from AIB ACC to BOI, no way! And I'm telling all my friends and family to move their acc when their student one expires. They are all going to do that as the fees are actually cheaper.

Horrific customer service

Horrific customer service. Business banking is a disgrace, and amongst the worst I've encountered worldwide. Annoying security processes, long phone wait times, bad technology. They have it all.

I am so tired dealing with this bank

I am so tired dealing with this bank. There is so much I could say, but today I'm specifically talking about phone wait time - having just waited over 40 minutes to get through. I find it unbelieveable in this day and age that their phone service / call centres cannot tell you where you are in the queue and approximately how long the wait is. Thats all I want to know and then I can decide whether to hold or try again another time.

If I go to a shop and see 20 people in the queue I can make a decision to walk on and come back later.

Problem with their phone Banking is you wait five minutes or so not knowing, then another few minutes, now your invested close to 10 minutes, better not hang up now, I must be close. I'll wait another few minutes........before you know it your invested half an hour and daren't hang up now!!!!

I have converyed my views so often over the last couple of years!!! Formally, informally and I'd say nearly every time I call and have a wait time. They always say they take note but do nothing.

Shockingly unprofessional outfit

It's hard to know where to start with this review. Should I talk about how they managed to lose all of my personal identifying data including passport, bank statements, payslips etc, even after they were delivered in person in branch? How they managed to put my credit card account into arrears twice - by accident! And then sent me letters from people who didn't exist and with return phone numbers where staff members had never heard of the people who wrote the letters! Or the official complaint being closed without ever speaking to me or investigating any of my complaints? Or the second official complaint being assigned to the same agent, who again refused to speak with me and issued a final response without once speaking to me!

An amazing shambles of an institution, and I have to follow up with the financial ombudsman to actually force them to tell me what damage they've done to my credit record and to repair it. Unbelievable stuff, and sadly not a once off, or even a twice off, or even a thrice off!

Was a customer for 14+ years

Was a customer for 14+ years, never had issues until they owed me money.

Took a loan out with them, paid off in full. Took 7 months to close! basically refused to close the loan out and continued to charge me interest. Every time I rang they said it was with some department and that said department had no contact email or number. Was promised it was being closed, would receive a call and letter to confirm.

Made official complaint, finally received on call back from them. Ever since when i call the person back they never answer. Still have no answers and other than the loan disappearing off my account. I still have no idea if its been officially closed. Very worried their unprofessionalism is going to effect my credit rating.

This review is specifically about the…

This review is specifically about the Bank of Ireland branch in Strabane, Co. Tyrone. It is not aimed at all of the staff, some of whom are really lovely and more than helpful; but more those who definitely require further training in customer interaction; the practices of the bank and their shoddy customer service.

My experience of the bank was between 2017 and 2020. It was a community group account. We experienced some questionable behaviour - such as them losing mandate documents; not updating documents despite repeated requests; ignoring complaints or dragging them out so long that we ended up leaving; and lack of privacy when discussing the errors. One incident occurred in the main public area with the discussion lasting 30mins before the manager finally decided to take it to the back office. We felt like we were treated like criminals and never once received an apology.

I would never recommend this bank to anyone. I have heard stories from other parties regarding this branch and others under the BoI umbrella, which I wish I had heard prior to dealing with them.

My advice is to do some research into the bank and the specific branch before you decide which one to deal with.

Very Bad and Poor Customer Service

Very poor customer service. Avoid at all costs. They could not care less about their customers.

I have now fill report with Financial Ombudsman Service to Investigate the issues with them.
