Tried to update my address and was told…

Tried to update my address and was told it wasn’t possible because they couldn’t verify me but that I could close my account. I answered all the questions they asked and I am a real human being. Feels like some kind of movie gone wrong, wtf?!

Unnecessary Stress and Mishandling of a Simple Deposit

On March 3, 2026, I wrote a $600 check from my personal account (balance over $5,000) to my business account (balance $650) to cover my rent due on March 5. I deposited the check through the United Bank business mobile app. On March 4, I received two emails from the bank confirming the deposit was received and that the $600 would be available the next business day.
On March 5 at around 8:44 AM, after working a late shift, I received a call from the Sterling, VA branch manager. She asked about the check, which I explained. She then asked for my home address, which I provided, along with my mailing address. She told me I “did not answer correctly” and then asked for “the codes” on my account. I told her I only have an ATM PIN and was not aware of any other codes. She insisted I had one and told me that if I did not come to the branch before 2 PM, she would return my check — despite my personal account having more than enough funds to cover it.
This caused unnecessary stress, and I drove to the branch immediately. When I arrived, she asked for my ID and said she would show me the note on my account. The note she showed me was actually the answer to one of my security questions — a word, not a numeric code. She had never read the security question to me over the phone; instead, she repeatedly asked for my home address, which is not the same as the answer to the question “What is the address where you were born?”

Even after realizing the misunderstanding, she did not acknowledge the error. She suggested removing the security note “so they wouldn’t ask me again,” but I declined because that security question is there to protect my account from hackers and fraud — not to be used against me when I am depositing my own check. This entire situation was unnecessary, confusing, and handled unprofessionally. A simple $600 deposit between my own accounts should not have resulted in this level of disruption.

Added Note: I have been a United Bank customer for about five years and have always deposited my checks through the mobile app without any issues. This was the first time I was ever questioned or interrogated about my own deposit. The experience was unexpected, stressful, and completely unnecessary, which is why I felt it was important to document it here. If needed I can add the Bank emails about my deposit.

Perfectly Balanced Bank

From account opening to calling customer service, I've been impressed every single time. I closed my accounts at PenFed and First Tech because they became focused on the wrong things as they grew to be too big for their britches.

When you call customer service, a REAL HUMAN answers immediately (during office hours) and God do I appreciate that. The same goes for account opening support. REAL HUMANS who know what to do and are ALL US-based. Those companies that use offshore call centers to save money cause us all a lot of headache and anxiety. I don't care about how polite they are and how they can repeat my problem back, I just want a person in this country who understands all the nuances of English. This is why I wholeheartedly appreciate United Bank.

Thank you, United Bank, keep doing exactly what you're doing!

You need permission from the bank to make a purchase

Do not bank here if you want to access your money without getting another persons approval. I tried to make a purchase for a medical device for my child. The funds were available in my account. I was told that I would have to request a funds increase after my card was declined twice. Called United to do so. They asked a few verification questions for security purposes. Then, said the answers were incorrect (my answers were not incorrect. There answers were obviously something else),insisted that I had to come to the branch in person to make sure I was actually me. I missed the window for ordering. So i called to set up a funds increase for the next morning. No, you cant do that. So i have to let medical supply run my card, let it get declined, then call United Bank to do this again. I have never had so much trouble making a purchase in my entire adult life. I will be pulling my money and going elsewhere. No bank should have that much control over someone else's money.

During Difficult Times not supportive

I have had my small business account with United Bank since I opened my business about 6 years ago. I sought assistance from the branch manager regarding upcoming client deposits and fees. She mentioned that they were not able to assist because it was not THEIR error. (I am kicking myself as to why I am still doing business with this bank. I have always been a fan of Capital One fintech, i.e. the ability to do external transfers and other technology that United Bank does not...lessons learned though). However, I've found that my small business has been valued more at Capital One, Navy Fed, and AMEX. Lessons learned again.

I had a problem with my car loan

I had a problem with my car loan, everything was fine and I wanted to solve the problem the same day, I paid what I had to pay, when I wanted to pick up my car I realized that the bank makes deals with criminals, the bank authorizes them to charge you what they want and cash so as not to pay taxes, I am very upset and I felt unsafe in that place since they do not accept debit or debit cards. If I had known this beforehand I would never have used this bank.

Great Local Bank with Room for Consistency Improvement

I've had nothing but positive experiences with United Bank, especially at my local branch, where I manage both personal and business accounts. While they may not be as large as Chase or Bank of America, they remain competitive in terms of services and rates. The staff has always been friendly and helpful, making it a pleasure to bank with them.

The only area I believe could use some improvement is their consistency with requirements. I noticed some discrepancies in the documentation needed for home loans versus HELOC loans, which caused a bit of confusion. However, beyond that, they have been great so far, and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a solid local bank.

Go to another bank

I was just trying to make a deposit and I gave them all my information but because I didn’t remember my phone number from years ago when I started the account I can’t deposit money or a check. I gave them all the important information about everything. So that tells me I need to find another bank to deal with. I guess I’ll have to find another BANK. This is a red flag.

Finally after years I changed banks!

Finally after years I changed banks!! United bank is the worst bank!! Their customer service is so rude!!! That goes for the employees at the banks too!!! How do you have a bank with such horrible customer service!! Maybe you need to fire and rehire all new employees because I actually work for a very large bank and we under no circumstances are allowed to be rude to our clients!! Good bye United!!
