The Good and the Ugly

Good one first:

Since almost 2 years I was a customer with them - they ever get me because of their nice offer "Unlimited Reseller Hosting". Their service was always good, and their environment stable. I felt comfortable with them, even they rise their price a little bit over the years, which is normal.

Followed by the Bad:

But then, in February/March I got an email with a big, big change:
Increasing the price (a lot) and decreasing their package value (a lot). So you get less for paying much more.

Not only "unlimited everything" turn to "very limited" (only 100 GB and 50 cPanel accounts), also that I have calculated with my ~ 200 GB usage I have need to pay around 70 £ ! I dont want to buy a whole server!
Even after I have recalculated the space and brought it under 100 GB, I felt not comfortable anymore. What I really dont like is to change a contract in that essential way. Anyway one good thing was that I had 3 month (what was fair) to think about a solution - and quit here.
I guess many customers (resellers mostly) will quit now, or soon after they are realizing the increased costs for a less value.

What a pitty ! This company was really good, but will discourage their customers - even explaining their service "will be much better and improves a lot" (marketing speech).

Anyway, thats business - but I am disappointed and really thought I could be with them much longer.

Best regards and good luck!

Downhill since Krystal took control

As a great many have said recently, they were brilliant back before their takeover by krystal. The initial price-rise was digestible, the most recent additional price-rises are a huge percentage increase, and comes with a very much reduced service compared to what was offered for less previously. As others have said, a quick internet search shows a large number of cheaper options, providing more for less, and with better reviews/ratings. I was sent an invoice for my domain, as it is 'no longer included' (a further stealth cost added to the original hefty increase) - I was not informed of this at all until I questioned why it was not included. After half an hour of confusion it was finally dealt with, but these are not things a customer should have to chase repeatedly. Smart are trying to be proactive in dismissing these reviews on here, but there's a reason so many customers/now ex-customers are dissatisfied with the current service, and it's not because they need to 'understand the changes' as is constantly referenced - customers are never going to be happy when they feel like a business is simply trying to cash in on them, however you try and justify it to people.

366.67% Price Increase!!!

Price increased from £15pm to £70pm!

That's a 366.67% increase before you tell me price increases are inevitable.

Absolutely outrageous. A quick google returned a plethora of other companies offering the same or better product for less than I was paying originally.

I expect many others are doing the same, what on earth were you thinking!?

You just lost a customer of many years.

As a measure of the type of company they are, rather than respond to my review they reported it! The Truth Hurts doesn't it!

Outrageous Price Increases

I always loved SmartHosting, they were very affordable and had a very good customer service team.

Their prices have risen a couple of times since I joined them 3 years ago but this is expected and I didn't mind. However, they have now decided to completely restructure their pricing plan.

My "unlimited reseller hosting" plan will change from £14.99 a month (exc. VAT) to £69.99 a month (exc. VAT). I cannot even begin to understand how they see this as a reasonable change, and as a result I have had to rehome / shut down a lot of websites that I looked after.

What a shame.

Thank you, Daniel, for leaving feedback.

As explained in the email I issued, price changes are relative to the amount of resources used. While previously we have always offered an unlimited service this has led to a reducing in the quality of service we can offer and failure in backups and overall stability.

We want to make sure that moving forward we can offer a service that performs, is super reliable and simply works. While we do understand that removing unlimited as an offering and charging correctly for resources used will be a deal breaker for some customers, the benefits of the changes to your service will be well worth the price increase.

Its a shame that this change will impact you, if we can review the account with you to help trim back the costs, please do let us know, as we would love you to see for yourself the radical improvements and new features we have in store.

Up until this year I would have recomended SmartHosting to anyone.

This year they decided to do a massive price increase which has basically made myself move away from them, going from happily paying £2.99 a month for the past couple of years for my handful of sites and a local charity site. They are now increasing this to £7.99 from July.

Since the take over from Krystal this is the second price rise.

Thank you, Alex, for taking the time to leave feedback, as with all feedback, it is both welcomed and valued.

I think it is important to note that while this is the second price rise, the service itself is also changing, while many providers simply raise prices to increase profits, we are investing the revenue back into the platform to provide a service that will be above and beyond what others can offer.

It is a real shame that you felt the need to leave and we do honestly wish you the best in the future, however, the changes are essential to ensure that we can build and provide a service that we are proud to put our name against.

If you do change your mind or would simply like to understand the changes better, do get back to me.

A company from top to bottom

Absurd price policy

At the beginning when he entered with them they had their ups and downs
but everything works excellent

Since Krystal got his hands on the first price increase, it was reasonable and could be paid.

It had an unlimited reseller paying a good price, since it increased by 200% was ridiculous going to limited, insurance will continue to raise prices without control

They do not mind keeping customers, they simply kicked many with their prices

They threw away 5 years of business that he had with them
I do not care if I leave, here Krystal's money sends

I'm sorry I left a good company that was excellent at the beginning

Krystal you screwed a lot of sure you're going down
the recent good reviews of insurance are fake to deceive people

Thank you, Freddy, for taking the time to leave your feedback.

I do disagree I'm afraid, our price policy is not absurd, however, I do fully agree that in our early days, we did have both ups and downs, these, however, were caused by offering a service at such a low price point, that our platform suffered as a direct result.

Offering an unlimited service, was the direct cause for our "ups and downs". While we do understand that having an unlimited resource is flexible and easy to manage, the negatives far outweigh the positives.

Having unlimited disk space is great, however, the core objective for a hosting service is uptime, something that while offering the unlimited service was jeopardised.

We clearly want to keep customers happy and keep customers generally, that has been our core objective from day one, however, we also need to ensure that just as with any business, we charge accordingly for the resources used.

We are still a "good company". We are actually better than we ever have been, as the service we provide is getting better, it is a shame you are not prepared to see the benefits and improvements for yourself.

We wish you all the best with your new provider.

Thanks Smart Hosting.

Smart Hosting, as it used to be at the beginning.
I started with the idea of offering my study partners a solution to the "free" web storage of Hostinger (many of you will know this company) and I got together with them to be able to collect a little money and buy a hosting resellers account. And we found it, Smart Hosting.
At the beginning we paid about £ 69 per year. It was very functional, and the websites of my fellow students were a few index.html, a few .css and some images.
Our websites were not more than 40mb of web storage. Then with my colleagues we continue paying the hosting annually and we resell our colleagues from other grades and courses, always the websites did not exceed 40mb of storage. We did it this way because we wanted to help our classmates financially and we did not charge more than what we paid to Smart Hosting.

They raised the price in 2018 because they would migrate to a better environment, and we understood it, we managed to collect the money to pay for it and we paid the fee (approximately £ 165).
Now, after having written to Dave, without achieving anything. We write our fair and clear opinion of our situation:

Our hosting was not for profit, we did not do it to make ourselves rich, it was not a big business. The purpose of our web hosting was to provide a solution to our fellow students and help them financially by offering a good service at a good price. Today we will have to say goodbye to a good web hosting because because of other customers who made bad use of web storage, prices rose to x3.

Thanks for the time when the prices were more accessible for us. My rating is 2 stars, why? Because I exposed my situation and tried to raise awareness and Smart Hosting, the price went up, affecting those who did not use the service badly and who do not have the financial resources to continue with you.

Sorry for my english, im from Guatemala and is not my native language

Hi Bryan, thank you for taking the time to leave a review, we do value your feedback.

I don't think that it is very fair to say "Now, after having written to Dave, without achieving anything".

The email I sent all customers clearly detailed and explained the major changes that we are making, far more than simply a platform upgrade, we are making the largest improvement to our service since its inception along with a whole host of improved benefits, again detailed in my email.

To say that the changes would not achieve anything is clearly incorrect.

Neither do we intend to make ourselves "rich". The changes are not to better our profits, they are to better your service.

If you do not value a performant and reliable service, we will help you to move to a lesser / cheaper supplier, however, we hope that customers who do value the service we provide will be happy to see the new changes, improvements and enhanced features and in turn are happy to pay for them.

Please drop me a ticket. We can help either detail the changes so that you better understand them, or assist in your outbound migration.

Simply brilliant support

I have been with Smart Hosting for many years now and they haven't let me down once, either for my own website, or those of my clients. Absolutely brilliant tech support. Only once have I had to raise a ticket - most queries have been dealt with in the chat room. The guys give a clear explanation of what they are doing, and I can have the chat emailed to print out. I can't say anything other than they are brilliant!

You get what you pay for!

Firstly let me say I have nothing but praise for the ground staff at this company. Tech and support have always been brilliant, and they do not deserve to be tarred with the same brush that management are.

We, as a company, started using SMART because it was recommended to us. We've had a lot of bad experiences over the years, and we just wanted to find someone who was reliable and reactive. For 9 months this has been true. The cost was a factor, obviously, as we can always find better if we're willing to pay the extra bucks, but it wasn't a critical concern. With SMART we were 'promised' both a good price and a good service.

Initially we didn't want to move all of our 70 sites across. Past experience meant we were very cautious. So far we've transferred about half, with the rest all sitting on a second host's server. We had intended to move the others over the coming months, but SMART's arrogant price increase and reduction of service is making us rethink our plans. And yes they are reducing their service. I don't care how many ways they spin it, changing anything from unlimited to limited is a reduction! Changing your price from £29.99 to £69.99 is a price increase. And if we continue to move all of our sites, the price will need to increase to £139.98 just to stand still.

Of course, you can argue that we were taking advantage of the offer, but that's what unlimited means!

This current change is nothing to do with improving service. Their service was already one of the best out there. It is purely about their bottom line. They've asked themselves how can they monitise the service better. By increasing costs they will force companies like ours off, and thereby increase the revenue generated per GB. If I was really cynical I'd suggest that this was their plan all along. Entice people on with a great deal, then when they're settled, sting them. Afterall, they're techs too, so they know exactly how frustrating it is moving sites backwards and forwards.

We will probably remain with them for the forceable future. Afterall, they still offer one of the best services around. However, we won't be recommending them to anyone, and as soon as a better service comes up, we'll jump ship. Not because of the cost, but because of the lack of trust.

If you are thinking of using this company, be warned. Yes, the service is good, but don't trust the management. Whatever they say is said for marketing purposes. They don't care about their customers, and when they finally finish sucking every penny they can from you, the company will be bought by bigger entity that cares even less.

Hello Dave,
Simon here, from management!

Thought I'd respond to your rant as you've singled out one of our staff by name so it wouldn't be impartial for them to reply. (you're going to need to amend that by the way, you're in breach of TP guidelines)

I think I understand the crux of your argument as follows, but please feel free to correct me if I've got anything wrong.

1) Smart provides an excellent service!
1a) "Tech and support have always been brilliant"
1b) Since you've been with us (9 months) the service has been "reliable and reactive"
1c) "Their service was already one of the best out there"
1d) "they still offer one of the best services around"
1e) "the service is good"

2) You believe that "You get what you pay for!" (title of your review)
3) You used to pay less than you will do in future
4) You don't think you should pay more (for this excellent service)

No one has tried to say that we haven't removed Unlimited resources? Or that the prices are going up for some plans? In fact, that's exactly what this very detailed email we sent around stated! (which I know you've read...) https://www.bestwebhosting.co.uk/smart/newsletter/smart-plan-changes/

There's no argument that we've increased prices for some plans and reduced RESOURCES for some plans. We are in agreement there. That's what the email says. Clearly. But we haven't reduced SERVICE, nor are there any plans to do so.

In fact, as detailed in the email, these changes will allow us to invest more money in the service, which if history is any indicator will improve it. Unsurprisingly, the latest and greatest technology and the superb UK based support staff that are made available to you and your business 24/7 via ticket, email and live chat cost money. We've hired 12 support super heroes over the last year and are hiring more and we're about to embark on a massive new hardware refresh. These things cost money.

You write "Their service was already one of the best out there." and I thank you for the compliment, but while you may be happy to settle with "good enough", we are not. And the reality is that it's that continuous pursuit of what's better that creates the service you currently enjoy. We don't want to shoot for the bottom of the barrel and create the worlds cheapest host, we want to continue to run the worlds best hosting company. So you're absolutely right that we're trying to raise more funds but it's so that we have the revenue required to continue to innovate and improve the service.

If this isn't the sort of hosting company that you want to work with then I think I have a proposal that you'll be hard pressed to beat; I'll give you back every pound you've ever spent with us and you can go and find this elusive "better service" to "jump ship" too. Can't say fairer than that, right?

You have indeed been "'promised' both a good price and a good service." and you've got it. Is it going to be more expensive that it once was? Yes. Does it still represent exceptional value? We think so. For it to stay that way we need to start charging people fairly for what they use. If you think another company can offer the quality we do and Unlimited/cost is what matters most to you then please accept my offer and move to them. Otherwise you're going to need to accept that there was a time when your usage of the platform wasn't economic, which might have been good for you and yours but not for the ecosystem.

Kind regards,
Simon Blackler - CEO

smarthosting.co.uk useless

Back to one star; useless, and they are putting their prices up. Latest nonsense, freshly uploaded images not showing; checked via cpanel and they were there. Had a customer email me to say there were images missing. Smart Hosting support said the images were not referenced in my html, when they were, I did show source on the live page. I feel they just never accept blame. Had issues before this when newly uploaded files did not show; they told me to deal with their partner cloudfare rather than help me sort the issue out. Not happy. Smart Hosting are not worth the time, effort or money IMHO.

Message to Dave (when I changed my previous one star to a three star)
I previously gave you one star because of the redirect issue and the fact you could / did not run a simple htaccess config test for me to resolve the problem. I made it 3 stars only because the legacy htaccess line of code was not yours. But, all yours; I had Google issues because your servers can not handle the load from them when they mass crawl. Now you tell me you are more than tripling the rate I will have to pay soon on top of that. It is not going to happen. I will not pay premium+ rates for shared hosting. I am going virtual cloud server with either interserver or more likely digitalocean. No help needed thanks: I will be migrating.

Wow have just seen the complaining…

Wow have just seen the complaining reviews at the price increases, all I can say to that is you get what you pay for. I'm a website designer, I actually came on here to write what would be my third review of Smart Hosting during the several years that I have been with them, because once again they have had my back when trying to meet a deadline with their excellent support and quick response time even though it was almost midnight. I have never experienced this level of support from anywhere else. I am aware the prices are going up but to be fair I have many sites on my reseller account and and in order to preserve the excellent support and server tech it is only fair that the prices would need to be increased and I am happy with this. Much rather have confidence in the hosting than have to wait two days or longer for a reply as I have experienced on with other companies. Well done Smart Hosting you have my trust and thanks for being the best.
