It's great to have a complete source for a game genre but graphic design of the pages are unfortunately not good. Since avid reader of game magazines I can say chosen screenshots are not quality for publishing or reviewing a game. I'm speaking for CRPG book. Also there were unecessary titles which are included in the book but some true CRPG games are not.
I've purchased books from a number of online resellers, including the MAIN ones, and find myself having to return about a quarter of them due to damage. I recently checked my orders with bitmap books and realised I have purchased 14 from their library. Every single one arrived packaged with more care and protection than any online purchase I've made of any product. All 14 books still look immaculate and are still joyful to pick up and flick through.
The images in the latest book we bought are very dark, some too dark to see clearly. Also some very strange choices in illustrating certain games.
I contacted them to see if we could return it only for them to dismiss me and deny there is an issue. They would not let me return the book.
Quality is top-notch. Always interesting to read with great production values. Their stuff looks great on my bookshelf! One of the few companies dedicated to retro gaming history!
Firstly, I am puzzled that Bitmap books mostly use their own on-site review system when distrustful buyers like me prefer a 'close-to-independent' 3rd party review website.
I ordered 3 books on the 24th May, 1 was a pre-order but was shipping in a few days anyway. A few days after the suggested shipping date of the pre-order(and the other 2 in-stock books) I hadn't received any notification. I sent an email late on Friday and received a swift reply on the weekend with a shipping date.......
The books are some of finest build quality from the binding to the ridiculous quality of the paper. Also impressive, is the knowledge of the writers/researchers and the layout of the pages. The packaging as of yet is unequalled in the hundred+ parcels I receive each year.
I suppose the greatest incentive to write this review was not just the quality of these books.......as youtube exists, but that they replied to a message on the weekend with a personal reply.
