Froze bitcoin for 22 working days due to minor issue.

Freeze funds for minor issues. Can't give lead time for when unfreezing. Non-customer facing department deal with it and no one can give you an accurate answer. Froze my bitcoin for 22 working days even though I jumped through all the kyc/aml hoops immediately. Final insult was blocking me on X for respectfully asking for resolution. Will NEVER use again. Went to Kraken. Bitstamp is a P.o.S exchange.

Not a scam but terrible customer…

Not a scam but terrible customer support and verification procedure. I was verified customer and they suddenly asked for reverification - that took almost 6 months where they asked very private documentation. During that time my assets were frozen.
I would not recommend that service.

heads-up for anyone attempting to use the once trusted service …

25/03/26 heads-up for anyone attempting to use bitstamp: I’m experiencing major issues withdrawing funds that I moved from cold storage. Despite a long history of successful and trusted transactions with bitstamp, my withdrawals are now bouncing back to my bitstamp wallet with no explanation provided, I've lost around 50GBP on failed attempts to withdraw my funds today.

Bitstamp has been extremely frustrating and financially damaging

Bitstamp terminated my account without explanation after confirming it was in good standing. Because of this, I was forced to sell my Bitcoin at a bad time and lost about 40% of my investment. Customer support refused to provide any reason, citing “confidentiality.” Very concerning experience.

Stole Funds

Stole Funds

They froze my account for a year for no reason, rarely responded as I chased and would not let me withdraw.

They then forced shut my account without reaching out and only shut the account and liquidated my funds once the market rate was lower than what I had purchased. They refused to respond to legal action and they refused to assist or justify to their behaviour or pay back.

I'm frightened they'll keep my money.

I have to admit, it appears this company has gone down hill since it was took over by Robinhood and KYC has been implemented. Or rather the KYC has been poorly used, as it seems to take a shoot first ask questions later approach. It's the same story everyone else is giving, withdrawals and deposits blocked for no reason even though I've been a loyal customer for about 10 years. "Submit more evidence for this" "submit more evidence for that". It certainly seems like perhaps their systems are automatically blocking accounts?

Luckily I can at least still buy and sell if the market moves using the money already on there but I'm so scared that my money will just end up being stuck in their hands even though it is genuine and legitimately obtained. Honestly, customer support is vague and feels like the responses are copy and paste, and it feels like I've got to climb a mountain to prove im a legitimate investor. I know KYC is new but I'm scared now after all these other reviews. It's sad to give such a low rating because they were brilliant and prompt up until recently. However this is a reflection of how I feel at this moment, I know it will probably be okay and there's probably a delay from the volume of people having KYC issues but it's very scary.

The silliest part is that you can buy coins from THEM, and they still will block you from moving them.. either asking you to prove funds or confirm origin of a different crypto sent in from Binance for example. If you've sent them like 5 bitcoin from some random address you've never used, fair enough, maybe put that particular transaction on hold, but when they can clearly see, you bought coins from them from your bank account from them, why are they blocking you withdrawing in GBP or moving those coins? If you state you will invest up to $10,000 for example, please dont go over accidently buying crashes, you'll trigger a KYC review.

I will change this review if this issue is resolved.

*UPDATE*
The problem has gotten worse, I now cant even sell my crypto if I wanted to because they've now also disabled trading and there hasn't been any response from bistamp, I can't do anything at all and im just stuck until they reply which could take God knows how long. Appalling. It has to be their systems automatically blocking you because no human can be so silly? I was literally just waiting for them to reply from March 4th after sending info and trading was blocked today on the 25th?

The only mild saving grace is that they did respond to my complaint and new support ticket promptly, so it doesn't seem like they're avoiding me, I just hope I have trading reactivated again at the very least because its not fair.

Don't trust them. They are scammers. First they block your money, then they ask you to prove your identity, income, tax number, and other personal information. Even after providing all the requested information, they still don't enable the account.

Update 03/12/2026
Bitstamp by Robinhood contacted me again through the Trustpilot website, asking for the same information that I had already sent them before.
It seems that they only care about their reputation on social media, while at the same time they “screw over” their customers.

Bitstamp asks for personal documents - Looks like a scam to me

Thank you TrustPilot! I'm one of the lucky few that was able to withdraw my $ from Bitstamp before they froze my account. Suddenly I got a very strange message that said:

We kindly ask you to submit any financial documentation which can confirm the origin of your initial sent funds, such as monthly salary pay slip, annual tax revenue statement, investment portfolio, dividend payout conformation, property sale contract, inheritance or similar. In addition, please describe your account usage in as much details as possible.

Lastly, please elaborate what is the purpose and destination of your cryptocurrency withdrawals and provide relevant documentation/screenshots supporting your statements. Please ensure that your personal information (name, email,...) is also clearly visible on the documents/screenshots provided.

I thought this was an identity theft scam (and it very well may be one), but now I see on TrustPilot that others have received the same demands. I stalled them...

GET YOUR MONEY OUT OF BITSTAMP BEFORE THEY FREEZE YOUR ACCOUNT!!!

Thank you TrustPilot!

Update: On March 5, 2026 they froze my account, but I only have $1 left after I withdraw all the money from Bitstamp. I also withdraw all the money in my Robinhood account, since they will likely be next.

Update, March 11, 2026 - I am now even more of the opinion these document requests are part of an identity theft scam. I use several Bitstamp competitors now, and they only ask for a drivers license and a selfie photo. Asking for documents that contain personal information like pay stubs with SS# , bank account statements with account #, etc. can only serve one purpose.

Update April 10, 2026 - Bitstamp keeps sending me the same "form letter" asking for paystubs, bank or brokerage statements, and other personal documents that none of the other request. There is no legitimate reason to request these documents. Wish I had found trustpilot before I ever opened an account with Bitstamp. The good news is I pulled my money out before they froze my account. My balance is now less than $5 USD.

Hi everyone Be careful with them! Suddenly they don't let me withdraw the coins.. They told me they need to do verification. I provided them with everything they asked for (ID, bank confirmation, etc.) and they still don't let me withdraw the coins for a month now that it's under review. Coins that I bought from them. Really cheeky and looks like a "bite". I told them Danny is going to post it online and I see Danny is not the only one. Does anyone know what's going on there?

Despite being a 10 year user

Despite being a 10 year user, my account has been blocked for the second time in a year even though KYC has been thoroughly done and validated. Bitstamp is asking again exactly the same thing as the previous KYC. Seems like they don't read former support tickets. Blockage comes without notification and no answer from the support service to be expected soon.
I should have taken my distances when it first happened.
I would avoid using their services from now on.

Customers are getting recurring account blocking

Something bizarre is happening with Bitstamp. Lots of customers are having their accounts blocked until they AGAIN send address information. I've had an account for years. But just like others, I'm suddenly blocked until I send in ANOTHER utility bill with my address. Every few months this is happening. Each time, it's taking longer for Bitstamp to reply and unlock my account. It's been 2 weeks this time. I just opened an account with a US crypto exchange in minutes that has NO history of constant account-locking for addresses. Bitstamp account CLOSED! Stay away!

Do NOT use if you don’t want your funds frozen

About 70 thousand USD were illegally frozen.

I strongly advise against using Bitstamp if you value access to your own funds.

My account was fully verified, yet withdrawals were blocked and my funds effectively frozen. Support kept requesting additional documents that are either irrelevant or impossible to provide in my situation, with no clear legal basis or deadline.

What is especially concerning is that this can happen after you deposit funds and complete KYC. Once your money is inside, you may lose control over it for an indefinite period.

There is no real support resolution — only delays, copy-paste replies, and shifting requirements. The only option left is escalation to the regulator.

This is not how a trustworthy, regulated exchange should operate.

Do not use Bitstamp unless you are prepared for the risk of your funds being frozen without a clear timeline.

Over 5 weeks holding uncredited ETH deposit – no resolution or meaningful update

EDIT: After two and a half months, I have received the funds. I was required to join a video call with Bitstamp and verify my wallet, etc. My interpretation is that the issue was due to operational issues - which although I find unacceptable, is not nefarious. Ultimately, I would rather use a crypto exchange that is compliant, and secure, but that can be slow. Updated review from 1/5 Stars, to 2/5 Stars.

I deposited ETH to my Bitstamp account in late December 2025.

The funds arrived on-chain at the correct deposit address but were not credited to my balance. Instead, they were forwarded internally to a main contract address (standard sweep behavior), resulting in a net zero credit at my deposit address.

Now over 5 weeks later, the deposit remains held and uncredited despite full cooperation on my part:
- I provided all requested originator/Travel Rule data and updated tax documentation (TIN/NI/UTR under CARF), which support confirmed was accepted around 20 January.
- I explained the deposit flow in response to their query about the sweep behavior (received acknowledgment but no further requests or progress).
- I submitted a formal complaint on 9 January 2026, with a stated 15-business-day timeline that has now passed (expired late January / early February) without any final response, extension notice, or substantive update.

Support and complaints responses have been limited to generic replies: "team is investigating," "we'll update when we have something," "rest assured," etc. Phone support provided no useful information.

No estimated timeframe has ever been given, and there has been complete silence since early February.

This prolonged hold has exposed me to significant ETH price volatility and challenging tax deadlines, with no control over my assets or clear path to resolution.

While I understand regulatory checks (CARF/Travel Rule) may be involved for certain transfers, the lack of transparency, missed internal deadlines, and absence of any meaningful progress after full compliance is unacceptable for a regulated platform.

I strongly recommend considering alternative centralised exchanges if you plan to use the platform for larger transfers tied to real deadlines (e.g., tax payments, company bills, or time-sensitive obligations). Prolonged holds like mine (over 5 weeks with no resolution or ETA) can create serious jeopardy if funds are unavailable when needed.

I hope Bitstamp can provide an update or resolution soon.

Money just disappeared

I started a withdrawal operation some months ago. My bank never received that amount. Bitstamp, through a messy support staff, complained about USD/EUR issues and didn't helped me much to get my money back. Yet, they asked me a feel of 30 EUR to provide tracing, roughly the same amount I expected. Fortunately, the sum was quite small. But what if was greater?

DON'T USE THIS PLATFORM

DON'T USE THIS PLATFORM, NEVER!!!
I was using them for years, perhaps around 4 or 5, and now
i’ve been dealing with a serious issue on their platform for almost a month, and my funds are still stuck.
Since Dec 27, I’ve been unable to sell Maker (MKR) on their platform. Every attempt to sell gives an error (in the app and the web version), and even advanced orders never execute because the Maker price on Bitstamp is frozen.
For clarity:
✅ I had the same issue with IMX, but eventually managed to sell it after days of trying.
❌ But Maker is still impossible to sell.

Here’s what’s happening:
- Bitstamp shows MKR stuck around €1,100 for weeks (I had to complain several times and the price quickly updated for even lower)
- The real market price has been moving normally (e.g., €1,300–€1,500+)
- The price chart on Bitstamp hasn’t updated for weeks
- The sell button returns errors every time
- Advanced orders never fill because the price is outdated
- I could sell BTC and other altcoins normally — only MKR is blocked
I’ve sent many screenshots, explanations, and even offered a video showing the issue.
🤡 Support keeps repeating the same scripted replies, asking for the same screenshots again, or saying they “don’t influence prices,” which completely ignores the actual problem: their platform is malfunctioning.
It’s now late January. I still can’t sell Maker. I still can’t access my funds. And Bitstamp still hasn’t fixed anything.
This is unacceptable for a platform that claims to offer reliability and 24/7 support.
Bitstamp, I need a real investigation, a fix, and compensation for being unable to trade due to a platform failure!!!!!!!

Very disappointing experience

Very disappointing experience
My account was working perfectly fine for a long time.
Suddenly, Bitstamp blocked my withdrawal feature without any prior warning.

They asked me to attend a video verification call, which I completed successfully.
Despite that, withdrawals have remained blocked for more than 10 days, with no explanation, no clear reason, and no timeline.

I have not violated any rules, and there were no suspicious activities on my account.
My support ticket number is #2290424, yet the issue remains unresolved.

Holding users’ funds without notice or transparency completely destroys trust in the platform.

Honestly, I am not even interested in reactivating the account anymore.
There are much better and more professional platforms, such as Kraken, that respect their users and provide clear communication.

I would not recommend Bitstamp to anyone who values reliability and access to their own funds.

Locked account without warning or cause

Have been a customer for close to 10 years, but only used it for buy and hold until recently. Problems started, when I withdrew all my funds in October 2025. I wired some of the profits back, just 20k. Surprisingly they demanded to know where that money came from. I told them the money came from the profits I made on their own exchange and sent a screenshot of their own records proofing this. No more questions after that, so I thought the matter was resolved and continued trading.
In January 2026 they suddenly locked my account without warning or even a notice. I only found out, when I wanted to start a trade, which suddenly didn't work.

In the support section, I couldn't find any trace of my previous interaction so I explained again that these are profits from selling crypto on their own exchange and sent the screenshot as proof a second time. Customer service takes days to respond and asks more questions, this time about the initial investment all the way back in 2018.
Many days later, instead of reacting to the answers I gave them, they repeat the same boilerplate message that I just responded to. I've never seen anything as disrespectful with a customer service. It's like they are actively trolling their customers.

After this I gave up on this silly KYC thing and asked them to close down my account. It took them a whole of 5 weeks to shut down my account and they charged a 50 EUR fee for doing so. Not sure they would have ever done anything if I wouldn't have escalated to complaints. Customer support was completely useless when it came to shutting down my account.

Having your account locked for 6 weeks without warning with no obvious cause and no way to unlock or quit is unacceptable behaviour in a market as volatile as crypto. Stay clear!
