Beyond the Monsoon
Beyond the Monsoon: An Unforgettable Annapurna Circuit with Breathe Nepal
We really wanted to trek in Nepal, but we initially ruled it out because our only window was August. We were worried about the monsoon, but the team at Breathe Nepal encouraged us to go anyway. They explained that the Annapurna Circuit, due to its height and geographical position, lies largely in a rain shadow area, meaning significantly less rain.
They were spot on! We were incredibly lucky: almost no rain (just a couple of nights and some light drizzle one day). We didn’t see a single leech, and we enjoyed stunning views of the peaks. The temperatures were very pleasant, and the trails were nearly empty. We shared the path with the same small group of people throughout, making some great new friends along the way.
Logistics & The Journey:
Breathe Nepal organized all the logistics perfectly. Since there are no domestic flights during this season, we traveled in private jeeps. It’s important to know that the roads are in rough shape and the journeys are long (12 hours on the first day!), but the upside is seeing the country up close: the rainforest, waterfalls, children walking to school, and the breathtaking evolution of the landscape.
Trekking Highlights:
The variety of landscapes is brutal—from lush rainforests to the high-altitude challenge of the Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters. The early morning views of the Annapurnas were deeply special. We also loved the trek from Muktinath to Jomsom, with spectacular views of Dhaulagiri and the legendary strong winds upon arriving in Jomsom.
Our Guide:
Our guide, Kabindra, was very attentive and always made sure we had everything we needed. A huge "thank you" to him for playing a basketball game with me at 3,600 meters—an experience I’ll never forget!
A Note for Experienced Mountaineers:
As we are experienced mountaineers, there were moments where we felt our guide was a bit over-protective, which limited our freedom of pace. Since we are well-acquainted with high altitudes and how our bodies react, we occasionally had to push for itinerary changes or skip planned breaks to suit our rhythm. While we understood his focus was safety, we preferred a bit more autonomy.
Overall, it was a trip where everything went right, and we will remember it forever.
