Catfishing, Broken Promises & Shady Business – A Complete Scam Disguised as a “Boutique Agency”

This company is the definition of shady. From the start, the red flags were there. They constantly rescheduled meetings and claimed someone would reach out to me — five times over — before finally going through with a Zoom call only after I made it clear I would go with another company if they didn’t follow through. That alone felt off. But it only got worse.

After the initial meeting, things seemed slightly more legit — until I was contacted on WhatsApp by someone named “Jennifer,” claiming to be my account manager. Out of due diligence, I searched her name and photos to get familiar with who I’d be working closely with and discovered she was impersonating a real person. I even contacted the woman being impersonated — this was full-on catfishing.

I reported this to Build Your Socials, and instead of expressing real concern, they brushed it off with a robotic, chatGPT-style email claiming she was “hired from Upwork” — yet on the WhatsApp business profile, she was listed as the Head of Social Media Marketing for their company. That doesn’t just “happen” by accident. It seemed like a blatant lie, one of many.

They said they’d assign me a new manager. This time I insisted on a Zoom meeting to ensure I was speaking to a real person — again, I had to chase them down for about a week just to get it scheduled. Countless ignored emails and delays later, they finally agreed.

Guess what? The “new” account manager messaged me from the same WhatsApp number as the impersonator. Same job title. Only difference? The profile picture was changed to a plain black image with their logo. At that point, it was clear: this company hides behind fake profiles, AI-generated emails, and “official-looking” contracts — but behind the scenes, it’s a mess of deception.

There were countless inconsistencies: in our original meeting, they said they were based in Switzerland and New York. But WhatsApp showed a UK number. Then, meeting invites came through with Thailand time zones.

In the final Zoom call, the so-called account manager didn’t even know which package I’d purchased. After all this, they canceled my account — not because they were “too full” like they claimed, but because I caught on and called them out. They had the audacity to spin it by saying they maintain a “highly selective roster,” when in fact, they told me during onboarding that I was a perfect fit and “they wouldn’t push me to sign up if I wasn’t.” It wasn’t until I told them they were doing a lot of things that seemed like a scam (false identities, not delivering services, unresponsive, etc.) and that I would be reporting it as fraud that they canceled.

That’s seems like their sales tactic: flatter you, promise you premium service, and take your money — then ghost you, make excuses, or try to shut you up if you question anything. Their “selective roster” is just a way to filter out people who won’t fall for the scam.

They claim they’ve been in business for 10 years — yet the earliest Trustpilot review is from May 2024. You can’t find anything credible about them online besides their own website and these sketchy, too-polished reviews that now feel totally manufactured. That’s a classic tactic of fake IG marketing companies: create a new brand, flood it with paid/fake reviews, and hope people trust it long enough to get some quick cash before it implodes or rebrands again.

If you’re reading this, I’m begging you — don’t make my mistake. I’ve already had to cancel my debit card and take further steps to protect myself. Their whole business model is built on vague language, false identities, and AI-polished responses to cover up deeply unprofessional, borderline fraudulent conduct.

And Trustpilot — please don’t let these people wipe honest reviews off the platform. This is why real and honest feedback is needed. People deserve to know the truth.

They will keep you hanging on, gaslighting you with “we appreciate your patience” while delivering nothing of value. If I could give 0 stars I would. Save your money, your time, and your sanity.

Unwanted sales email

I've received a few emails offering their services. I'm not interested, but there is no way to unsubscribe from their unwanted emails without replying.

So I'm probably their oldest client at 54 😅 and was completely clueless about social media marketing for my consulting business. My daughter kept telling me I needed to "build my brand online" but I had no idea where to start.
The team at Build Your Socials was SO patient with me. They walked me through everything step by step and never made me feel stupid for asking basic questions. They set up my LinkedIn strategy and helped me create ads that actually positions me as an expert in my field instead of just random posts about my day.
In just 1 month I've gained over 2,000 LinkedIn connections and landed 3 major consulting contracts directly from social Media media leads. I never thought I'd be someone posting on social media regularly, but now it's just part of my routine. They really know what they're doing and genuinely care about your success. Can't recommend them enough!

Been in the fitness industry for 8…

Been in the fitness industry for 8 years and through I knew social media pretty well. Boy was I wrong lol. Build Your Socials showed me I was basically doing everything backwards. They didn't just grow my numbers (though my Insta went from 2k to 12K in 2 months which is insane), but they actually taught me the strategy behind it. Now I understand why certain posts flop and others take off. The ROI has been incredible. I've booked more online coaching clients in the last 3 months than I did in the entire previous year. My only regret is not finding them sooner. If you're on the fence, just do it. Worth every penny.

Honestly wasn't sure about this at…

Honestly wasn't sure about this at first because I've been burned by social media "experts" before. My bakery's Instagram was stuck at like 15k followers for months and I was posting daily but getting maybe 3 likes from my mum and two regulars lol.Build Your Socials didn't promise me overnight fame which I actually appreciated. The guy I spoke to (think his name was Marcus?) was really honest about timelines. After about 6 weeks I'm sitting at 23k followers and actually getting DMs asking about custom orders. Had my busiest weekend last month since opening.Only minor complaint is they took about 3 days to respond to one of my messages, but they were upfront about being swamped so can't really fault them. The content calendar they set up for me is a game changer - I'm not stressing about what to post anymore.Would recommend but manage your expectations. It's not magic, just proper strategy that actually works.

Keeps You Hanging On

I got on a phone call and the service seemed to be worth the try. I signed on and started paying monthly. For 6 months, I haven't received the services due to one reason or another, but kept being offered additional services free of charge to make it right, with the promise that someone would be reaching out or that Augustus, the owner, was overseeing my account personally due to the issues I was having. As of today, I have received no communication for 18 days and have not received the services I paid for. I have documentation of email after email.

I have no idea how they found me

I have no idea how they found me, but after 3 tries from their end I finally gave in. To be honest I was expecting it to be another fake bot company so I was biased from the beginning, but after 3 months I can comfortable leave a review to say that I am impressed, I have actually seen my reach, impressions, likes, views , comments etc etc all grow. I know whats bot and whats not as I have been in the industry for more than 4 years now. Thumps up for Build Your Socials to actually deliver and not act like every other company till now.
