Afternoon tea for the local children

Yesterday the owners of the hotel did afternoon tea for many of the local children including a visit from Santa and his Elf also presents for them all. Gail and I cannot thank them enough for being so kind, thoughtful and generous as our daughter had the most wonderful and magical time, i must mention that all this was completely free and included a picture with Santa by a professional photographer. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and the Christmas decorations are wonderful, in the past we have spent several New Years Eve celebrations here and we have never been disappointed. Thank you again!

Camelot castle Tintagel

Well we had a great stay at the hotel. 2 nights Friday and Saturday first weekend in November.
When I read the negative reviews I dispair at what people expect and want. I employ staff who stay several times a week in city centre Premier Inns for the same as we paid.
The hotel looks magnificent all dressed up for Christmas. Room with Atlantic ocean view and four poster was great. Hotel is warm and welcoming. Staff at the Dining room are lovely and responsive. In the Winter there is not a lot to do but relax, read eat and drink with some scenic walks thrown in.
In two weeks we are stopping at a big big name London hotel for 3X the price of this and I bet it will be nowhere as good an experience as this.
We'll come back next Spring or Summer.
Well done to John, John's wife and Ted and all the staff. Ignore negative reviews.

Outstanding visit for coffee & cake

A visit for coffee and cake was an extremely pleasant experience. The ground floor shone grandeur and class, by far the nicest location in the area. The staff were friendly, welcoming and happy to help. Exploring the grand room and view was relaxing to hear a piano player lesson an advanced student.
The men’s and apparently women’s were very country class that suited the ground floor.
Highly recommended visiting.
Honey cake 10/10

Just returned from an amazing few days…

Just returned from an amazing few days away. We had booked the 3 day midweek break which includes breakfast. The room was beyond our expectations we had a very comfortable 4 poster bed a settee and a table and 2 chairs in the bow window overlooking the sea. The furniture was just right for the type of room, personally I don’t like ultra modern I prefer quality. I admit the en-suite was small just like the ones you get on a cruise ship but who spends all their time in the bathroom?
The staff were both friendly and professional and the food was excellent we had evening meal in the restaurant the first night, we had afternoon tea the second day for our anniversary and Pizzas for our last night. All the food was excellent.
The breakfasts were good I had a cheese omelette the first morning which was a good size and very tasty, I had scrambled egg on toast with avocado and then a full English on the last morning.
Can’t wait to come back

Totally disappointing, do not stay here.

I booked a two night stay here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. From the moment we walked in, I knew that I had made the wrong choice. The place was more like a bric a brac shop with very old and dated furniture that needs a good clean and an new upholster. Our room was disappointing. The bed was very uncomfortable and the shower room was so small, you knocked your knees on the door when you sat on the stained toilet seat. The coffee was meant to be the best in Cornwall, well at £4.75 a cup you'd hoped it was. We've tasted better!!
The staff were very hardworking and most were friendly. We will not be recommending anyone to stay at Camelot Castle. We left feeling hugely disappointed.

Not what I expected

Stayed there two nights. The bathroom was very small as it was just a small shower cubical no bath, the wrong room was given despite booking for 4 adults we were given a family room. The receptionist blamed us for incorrectly booking but we showed the booking details which clearly stated 4 adults and yet no alternative was given. The shower/toilet facilities were disappointing and very small. The room was small as there was 4 adults this was for a family two adults and two children) and I was surprised no mini fridge available which comes with even the cheapest hotels. No room service/no phone in the room and if wanted room service we had to go down to the restaurant and have them deliver to the room with an extra charge. We later found out that once you order your food or drinks at the bar then we could have taken then food up ourselves. Only one lift that is locked so not accessible at all times and is not big for anyone that has a wheel chair, be a very tight squeeze . Location is nice as it’s on the coast. The restaurant in hotel is very limited does not really cater for all and the shops that are within walking distance do close early. There are seating areas to eat , one where you can wear your comfy clothes (where the bar is) and another which is to dress up which needs to be reserved but we didn’t bother as it’s the same menu nothing different. Food disappointment and expensive, I asked the person behind the bar what the fish of the day was she had no clue and didn’t even bother asking/finding out. Not enough staff which is why the person behind the bar was rushed off her feet as she was taking food, drinks and serving the food on her own. At one point the person at the front desk served our meal.

Rude!

We went in for a coffee as a party of four. We were clearly not welcome from the start, the waiter’s facial reactions were so as to suggest “ what do you lot want!” I said hello and that we wanted a coffee. The coffee that they themselves claimed was “ the best in Cornwall”. He offered us seating at a sofa, which I said was unsuitable for my disabled father and he then reluctantly took us into the main room.
A man who introduced himself as the owner said “ are you being looked after today I am Co-owner” My mother replied “ yes everything is fine thanks” he gave a look of contempt and went to speak to others with better accents as opposed to my mothers accent.
We reluctantly stayed, as it is complicated to move my father and relocate.
We then left and as as we exited the hotel, we noted a signed photo of Donald Trump and his wife. Had I known that I would have been giving money to someone proudly displaying the photo of a convicted felon I most certainly would not have spent money here. Extremely unprofessional and my money was clearly not good enough for them.

Disappointing ☹️

We booked two nights but checked out after just one night as a hotel employee made us feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome by making unfounded, inaccurate and unjustified comments which upset our children. Very unprofessional and very impolite. We will not be going back that's for sure. In addition, we had an outdated room with an uncomfortable bed and the restaurant service was far too slow [we waited over an hour for food]. For us, it was an awful and upsetting experience.

The staff excellent

The staff excellent, caring and helpful. The food was good, although as a small eater I couldn't do justice to many of the meals on offer for dinner. So I had a starter as a main meal most of the time. It would have been helpful to me to have a main meal child portion! The room we were in was lovely with a sea view. Comfy beds.
Spotless. Only faults: shower room tiny (I'm 5ft 1 inch and 8 stone)! The towels inadequate. The lift a bit ancient, caused many giggles as we navigated! My little dog loved her holiday and was made very welcome. Lots of lovely walks around the hotel. More poo bins needed. The hotel so very beautiful, loved all the chandeliers ! Such lovely architecture.

Great location but dated hotel

The hotel is beautifully located with impressive views, and from a distance, it looks every bit the luxurious destination it promises to be. However, my stay fell short of the high-end experience I expected.

The common areas like the downstairs and hallways certainly exude a sense of luxury, but that’s where the charm ends. Another reviewer mentioned the excessive self-promotion of the owners, and I found that to be true; their Camelot Castle News feels anything but humble or news.

Upon arrival, the reception was manned by functional staff who seemed disinterested in providing a warm welcome or offering any local tips. When I inquired about the possibility of an upgrade, I was met with silence—no response, no small talk, not even a polite refusal. It was a strictly transactional interaction that left much to be desired as a first impression.

I can only speak for room 303, but if it reflects the standard, then this hotel is in dire need of updates. The room was cramped and felt dated, with a mismatched collection of old furniture, an outdated TV, and a worn-out sofa. While the bed was comfortable, the overall decor lacked style and coherence.

The bathroom was the biggest disappointment. It was far from the high-end experience I had hoped for, resembling something from a basic home improvement store setup: a small, basic sink and toilet, and an uncomfortably tight shower cubicle that took about a minute to produce hot water, same with the sink. The shower space was so cramped that I had to partially step out to lather up, which would be impossible for someone with limited mobility. After exploring Tintagel Castle and the South West Coast Path, a refreshing shower would have been ideal, but this setup was reminiscent of a campsite.

The car park was another oddity—it was unlit and very dark, which was strange given the number of expensive cars parked there.

Given the feedback from other reviews, I chose to skip breakfast. The smell of food greeted us immediately upon exiting the front door, suggesting that the kitchen's extractor fan is poorly positioned. Additionally, the presence of a pizzeria felt out of place in what should be a high-end establishment, diminishing the overall ambiance.

Wifi is very poor, low signal strength and kept on kicking me out - in this age, this is a necessity.

While the location is undeniably great, with easy access to the South West Coast Path and stunning views, the hotel fails to capitalise on these assets or deliver on its luxury promise. For the price paid for a room only, there are far better options in town if you're willing to compromise on views.

What a disappointment!

What a disappointment!

The location is stunning and deserves a hotel to match, but the Camelot Castle fails to deliver on every count.

The first impression when you walk in is just plain weird, a cross between a tacky gift shop and a narcissistic gallery of faded photos of the owner with various 'celebrities' and a homage to Donald Trump.

The decor is dated and dominated by artwork of a single artist, that does nothing to enhance the environment.

A major criticism is that the place is dirty. The majority of soft furnishings are stained and dirty, this is in the public areas and continues in the bedroom. The carpets are dirty and stained in our bedroom.

Talking of our bedroom, we were given an upgrade and had a seaview with a four poster bed. The room was a good size and enjoyed amazing views. However, the furniture was a strange mish-mash, with nothing matching. The four poster bed had a poor mattress and the bed creaked with every movement which contributed to a very poor nights sleep. As for the bathroom! It can only be described as the same as you'd find in a caravan and small would be a kind description! Just plain weird!

Breakfast. Don't, just don't bother. £15.50 per person is a total rip off. Only 3 cereals and they are stale as uncovered. The bowl of fruit looked to be days old. Pastry selection consisted of croissants and nothing else. The coffee was foul and undrinkable. The cooked breakfast was very poor quality with the mushrooms virtually raw and my partners sausage uncooked .

All in all it, given the premium prices being charged by this hotel, I would expect so much more and can't help feel that the Mappin family are taking the proverbial out of it's guests and giving as little as possible.

Avoid!

Feel let down by service

Fantastic location and the castle really has the wow factor and beautiful views from the windows overlooking the sea that was the good bit but then letdown by the service you get. when I went to Reception to book in I was given the keys to 2 different rooms I told to go off and choose which one I want but the one that I wanted was already pre-arranged for me before we got there so not sure why I was given keys to another room as I had already arranged this before coming to the hotel. The room we had was the deluxe 4 poster bed with black tiled bathroom (301) top premium room costing £570 for two nights. I did expect a lot more service from the staff, but that didn’t exist. After inspecting the room I did find a couple of issues one being a hole had been drilled into the headboard of the bed looks like a camera had been fitted there previously, in the bathroom there was a lightbulb not working and the curtains were very nice but first thing in the morning you don’t want the Sun shining through and waking you up around 5am they were definitely not blackout curtains. Throughout the day the doors were slamming which went on until around midnight and seem to start around 7:30 in the morning. In the morning we went down for breakfast which was not included in the price that was an extra £30 for the two of us. We found the staff in the dining area very friendly and helpful but the breakfast itself was of very poor quality the bacon was more like plastic. After our two nights stay we checked out. Feeling very disappointed, we handed the keys back in and they checked to see if there was anything else to pay which there wasn’t and all they said was thank you. Nothing about did you enjoy your stay? Was everything okay? Me and my wife just walked away feeling very tired and disappointed at our stay. I would not recommend staying here to anybody. which is a big shame being it is such a fabulous location and beautiful looking hotel, but let down by the poor service.
