Great location but dated hotel
The hotel is beautifully located with impressive views, and from a distance, it looks every bit the luxurious destination it promises to be. However, my stay fell short of the high-end experience I expected.
The common areas like the downstairs and hallways certainly exude a sense of luxury, but that’s where the charm ends. Another reviewer mentioned the excessive self-promotion of the owners, and I found that to be true; their Camelot Castle News feels anything but humble or news.
Upon arrival, the reception was manned by functional staff who seemed disinterested in providing a warm welcome or offering any local tips. When I inquired about the possibility of an upgrade, I was met with silence—no response, no small talk, not even a polite refusal. It was a strictly transactional interaction that left much to be desired as a first impression.
I can only speak for room 303, but if it reflects the standard, then this hotel is in dire need of updates. The room was cramped and felt dated, with a mismatched collection of old furniture, an outdated TV, and a worn-out sofa. While the bed was comfortable, the overall decor lacked style and coherence.
The bathroom was the biggest disappointment. It was far from the high-end experience I had hoped for, resembling something from a basic home improvement store setup: a small, basic sink and toilet, and an uncomfortably tight shower cubicle that took about a minute to produce hot water, same with the sink. The shower space was so cramped that I had to partially step out to lather up, which would be impossible for someone with limited mobility. After exploring Tintagel Castle and the South West Coast Path, a refreshing shower would have been ideal, but this setup was reminiscent of a campsite.
The car park was another oddity—it was unlit and very dark, which was strange given the number of expensive cars parked there.
Given the feedback from other reviews, I chose to skip breakfast. The smell of food greeted us immediately upon exiting the front door, suggesting that the kitchen's extractor fan is poorly positioned. Additionally, the presence of a pizzeria felt out of place in what should be a high-end establishment, diminishing the overall ambiance.
Wifi is very poor, low signal strength and kept on kicking me out - in this age, this is a necessity.
While the location is undeniably great, with easy access to the South West Coast Path and stunning views, the hotel fails to capitalise on these assets or deliver on its luxury promise. For the price paid for a room only, there are far better options in town if you're willing to compromise on views.
