Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 91 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Customers frequently encountered unexpected additional charges, often doubling the initial price, especially for insurance or administrative fees. Many were refused the car they had paid for due to strict, unclear booking requirements, such as specific credit card types or exact name matching. Consequently, numerous people reported significant difficulties obtaining refunds for services not received, often losing their pre-paid money. Some people were dissatisfied with the lack of clear communication regarding essential booking details, like required credit card features or specific driver information, leading to last-minute issues at pickup. Additionally, customers found support to be extremely limited when problems arose, often struggling to resolve issues or navigate the complaint process effectively.

Don't book car hire with Ryanair

Don't book with Ryanair, just book directly with the car company and save yourself the hassle. We stupidly thought it would be easier because it's all done through my ryanair account. We have lost all our money and had a refund denied despite being told it would be refunded in 5-7 days, then 19-23 days after that.

Never rent a car through Ryanair!

I booked a flight with Ryanair, and at the end of the booking process, Ryanair was offering rental cars, before checking out. I had a look. Ryanair was offering online the same rental car supplier + full excess loss cover at a cheaper rate than the one I had through my usual broker. So, I decided to go with Ryanair. What I did not know is that their booking process has a bug, and automatically books rental cars with the customer being by default resident of Ireland, which I am not and have never been. There was no particular space in the rental car booking process to mention any particular residence. The only residence details I had mentioned were for my flight booking. At first, I did not notice that in the fine print of the rental car booking T&Cs. I only discovered it by coincidence weeks later, when rental car rates had increased a lot. I contacted Ryanair as this is their mistake. They lied. They replied that I had probably mentioned Ireland "by mistake" or that their system would have "detected" that I was in Ireland while booking (I have never been to Ireland in my entire life), that the excess loss cover was consequently not valid, and that taking the car from the supplier would not be possible. Basically, they had sold me an invalid care rental and invalid excess loss insurance, WHICH IS ILLEGAL!! My rental car booking had to be cancelled and replaced by a new one, of course at a time when rates had gone up. I was shocked. According to Ryanair and their lying team, the extra cost should be on me, of course. At Ryanair, even when it is their mistake, the customer pays. Acknowledging any mistake is not part of Ryanair's DNA anyway. The only think they do is to offer their fake apologies.
Conclusion: never book any rental car through Ryanair, unless you are resident in Ireland (and wants to take the risk of discovering other surprises in their T&Cs, upon which they will let you down).

Dreadful

Dreadful. Booked with Ryanair and booked excess waiver. Hire was through Record Go, hard to find ( small company) unhelpful staff and the car was a mess and wouldn’t lock. The excess waiver turned out to be with a 3rd party and I could have bought annual cover for the same price I was changed for 9 days.
NEVER through Ryanair again.

Never book car rental via Ryanair (Express Car Rental, Bydgoszcz)

Never book car rental via Ryanair.

We booked from Express Car Rental (Bydgoszcz) via Ryanair, our car was never there. There wasn’t anybody waiting for us, we were waiting ages and trying to contact them. It was a huge surprise to find out that they working only till 11PM, and the hotline is up only till that time. Ridiculous, planes are flying 24h/7.

Finally, we decided to ask different company if they know anything about them, and I have been told that this is the usual practice, as they don’t have office in airport and they are working only till 11PM, they basically don’t care.

Ryanair doesn’t want to give us money back, thank G-d we were able to dispute it via bank.

Avoid, avoid, avoid!

Never book extras via Ryanair

I wasn't allowed to pick car up due to forgetting licence, no other options, so had to cancel at the desk. Original booking stated 3 days charge for cancellation. I was charged the full 8 days by Ryanair stating I'd not cancelled and it's in thier T&Cs apparently. Joke is there are no support numbers to call in any of the emails and I canceled 'in person' at the desk. I'll never book any extras via Ryanair again.. I am a frequent business traveler.

Europcar Scam

Why can’t you give a minus review, NEVER hire from Europcar, through ryainair website. I am personally convinced they are running a scam, especially from Knock Airport in Ireland. (don't deal with Killian Kane). We were so careful with the hire car, we even vacuumed before we returned it as there is a large sticker on the dash saying you would be charged £100 if it needed valeting on return, not that it was even slightly dirty, two mature ladies hiring!
After returning the car they said we had damaged the vehicle, we couldn't even see what they said we had done, only when I got my hands and knees looking up to the sky could you see a slight mark. (You do not inspect the car like that when you pick up a hire car). It was such a hairline scuff on the petrol cap that would have come out with T-Cut, however, they charged us £720. We even filled the car up with fuel on the way back to the car hire and didn't notice the mark, this is how insignificant it was. They knew it was there as they came back and told us within 2 mins of looking over the car, you could not see the mark just standing looking at the vehicle. I could not attach photos on this review but have done so on Trustpilot. Do they really not want repeat customers? They even told us they would not get the damage repaired until the car goes back to the lease hire company, they would not show us they had marked it on their paperwork for the next hirer, so how many other people will they get with that mark, and how many have they already got before us? It is definitely a scam.
As the mark was not visible with the normal eye sight you would not go back in and mention the mark to be added to the paperwork, this is how they are running the scam. Even though we had taken photos of the car on pick up it was raining heavily and marks like this do not show when wet.
I advise you, do not hire from Europcar, use any other company but them.

I am happy with this service

I have used the service many times without any problems. When I finally had a problem, I was helped to have a full refund. I think the majority of the bad reviews are because of the rental companies are not clearly stating their fees, and terms, and for example that we as customers feel grossly overcharged when we forget our credit card (at least I did). I will recommend that Ryan Air, more clearly by each rental company state their typical extra fees to be aware of, and perhaps the number of customer complaints, they had concerning the rental company - something like: "For this rental company, we had 95% unproblematic rentals 4% complaints for hidden fees, 1% other problems". For example, when I tried to pick up a car at Alamo in Kaunas Airport (Lithuania), I found out that there are such fees as "cleaning fee", "late pick up fee", and outrageus extra cost, if you forgot your credit card. Also, Ryan Air should ban the rental companies, that excells in letting customers believe they have a clear and transparent deal, just to scam them when they are picking up the car.

NEVER BOOK A CAR WITH RYANAIR

NEVER BOOK A CAR WITH RYANAIR
- no price benefit
- the total amount of booking is debited immediately
- you get e-mail confirmation from the car rental company (e.g. Budget), but not from Ryanair car hire
- cancellation/modification conditions are hidden behind the link to the usual T&Cs
- your booking is NOT visible in your Ryanair client bookings; you need to go to a separate Web page that is hard to find. If you have not noted your booking number when you booked, you are screwed.
- unable to change booking via Budget
- impossible to extend the rental period and return location as it turns out no modifications or cancellation possible less than 48 hours before booking. Cancellation incurs 3 day rental cost.
- In sum, misleading and zero flexibility (typical of Ryanair’s deliberate strategy to trick and screw people)
-ALWAYS BOOK DIRECTLY WITH CAR RENTAL COMPANY, NEVER WITH RYANAIR CAR HIRE

Hired car via Ryan Air

Hired car via Ryan Air. Was not met at airport by car hire representative. Called and navigated my way through website Chat Bot. Requested call from real person. Finally advised Ryan customer service cannot do outgoing calls. Was given link to resolve issue with specific instruction to click on 'Customer Service' on the next screen. THERE WAS NO "Customer Service" button. Could go no further. No $100+ Refund for unused car hire did not happen.

WARNING

WARNING - DONT EVER USE RAYNAIR CAR RENAL OFFERS. IT IS A SCAM.
At least in my case they made me a victim of something that is nothing but a scam: when I wanted to pick-up the car that I reserved and paid for, the company refused to honor the reservation unless I, as the driver, presented a Credit Card still valid for 14 months. Quite absurd, given Credit Cards are normally issued for just a few years and the new ones only sent out a few weeks prior to expiry. I.e., around one third to half of all customers will be refused at the desk, unless they have looked up this totally unusual demand hidden somewhere in the Terms and Conditions. Well, my credit card, with which I had paid the one week's rental to RYANAIR, was valid for "only" 11 months, so the rental company (PANEC) refused to hand me the car I had reserved and paid for through RYANAIR.
I took it for granted that the rental contract would be made void and that I would get a refund but RYANAIR REFUSED TO REFUND THE SERVICE WHICH I WAS PREVENTED FROM USING. Trying to get a refund was a nightmare of and in itself, but hearing that the whole amount would be lost convinced me that a scam it is. The explanation given was that once the reservation is not cancelled ahead of time, there is nothing they can do. Why would I have cancelled? Not in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that I would not get the car and be stranded at night at Riga Airport with my family wondering what to do.

Excellent service - bad reviews are misleading

Very pleased with the service from RyanAir car hire. Most reviewers seem to blame the usual tricks of car hire companies on Ryanair themselves who are just a broker.

We had a cancelled flight on the day and despite the car hire company themselves saying they couldn't do anything, Ryanair were happy to cancel it for a full refund and help me book another.

Excellent customer service with no time sat on hold and everyone I spoke to couldn't be more helpful.

Just need to use common sense to know how to avoid the usual tricks of car hire companies.

Be aware of hidden costs!!!

I rented a car via ryanair. The cost was 107 euros, but guess what! When I went to take the car I had to pay another 100 euro for guarantee and another 180 euro for insurance, total 387 euros! It supposed to be only 107 euros!
Another thing you must have in mind is to have a credit card on person's name doing the reservation. We didn't and they refused to help us find a solution!Of course they kept the money, ryanair was almost impossible to talk to at the moment, we found an email after hours of searching!no one answered the phone it was given if you had a problem!it was a really bad experience!

Scam - misselling of invalid insurance policy

Wish I'd read these reviews before booking.
Paid c.£40 for cover when booking with Ryanair. Got to the Go Record car hire desk at the airport to collect our vehicle and were told that Ryanair's insurance policy was not valid and that we would need to pay c.€170 for a new policy to have the car released to us. Or alternatively we could have paid a €1400 deposit, which clearly we weren't prepared to do. The employee behind the desk said that this happens with almost every Ryanair booking.
I'm going to contact Money Saving Expert to see if they would be willing to take up the mantle with this. It would be great if everyone else with a similar experience could also highlight this issue and hopefully we can shine some light on it.

SCAMMERS BE AWARE!

If i could I would give this service -100 stars. First, I paid 108€ for car hire, didn’t receive any confirmation, have been writing emails and calling them for 4 days asking for refund and less than 48 hours before actual booking they solved the mystery why i don’t have any confirmation email and they want to fee me because it’s their policy. Ryanair sent the confirmation to their made-up email which i have in app and which i’m not able to change. Now they don’t pick up the phone, just i think everyone from their help desk is replying to my angry emails and claiming something else. They are just bunch of scammers and obviously Ryanair is just making money on their third-party services because i really have feeling they made this on purpose because flight tickets or priority bags always confirmation goes to my actual email, just this service was lost in their system :) Mystery :)

I will never book car hire with RyanAir…

I will never book car hire with RyanAir again. Firstly my flight to Edinburgh was delayed by 6 hrs, but that is another RyanAir disaster story. But the fact was that I would now not be able to collect my car from SIXT at the original pick up time as I wouldn’t arrive until 2am which is 3 hrs after they close. Spoke to SIXT to try and rearrange pick up time, but they said because I had booked through a 3rd party they could’t help me and I had to speak to RyanAir. I had 6 hours at the departure airport and even during that time sending emails and trying to speak to their helpline (haha) it was impossible to get any assistance from RyanAir. So from now on I will book directly with the car hire company.

Paid for the same car hire three times…

Paid for the same car hire three times for the 4 days in France! Ryanair car hire is awful! First time was a simple name change from me to my husband.. get to the airport and the Hertz desk state no booking! They saw my first bookin that was cancelled, no sign of second but we had the paperwork! Called Ryanair and they said I wouldn’t get a refund if we booked at the desk.. hertz stated their systems have been down all week so we had to! So nearly £1000 paid and neither company backing down!
