Not allowed to rent a house
Wanted to rent a house, was told I had to use checkboard app to complete the referencing stage.
Turns out that they only accept a passport and driving licence for ID. Having never been over seas, and not having to drive I don't have either. This meant I couldn't continue with the referencing through the app.
After contacting them via the number on their webside, they simply said there was nothing they could do and that I would have to speak with my housing agency, who in turn said that by law they are not allowed to go without me finishing the referencing stage as it's used to prevent any possible money fraud.
I'm now constanly reminded via email to complete my ID check, reminding me that I'm no longer able to getthe dream property me and my partner wanted to rent, and the smug "help" hyperlink they provide for if you are having issues with this step simply refers you to a page that states "Sorry at the moment we are not accepting any other documents."
Not everyone has a passport and driving licence.. they clearly know this to be the case otherwise they wouldn't have a help section about it. So why no alternative?

As part of the referencing process, Checkboard only accepts valid photo ID documents such as passports and driving licences.
It is mandatory for any landlord or agent to gather evidence of these documents in order to comply with government regulations, regarding the right to rent checks and anti-money laundering.
We like to use the example of travelling and going through border control. This process would be similar to presenting a passport.
Checkboard might advise the client to discuss it directly with their agent to see if there are any further options to explore.
We understand how this could be an inconvenience for individuals that do not have a passport or a driving license. For that reason, we are constantly monitoring for updates in the guidelines set up by the government to update our system accordingly.

I have carried out several reference…
I have carried out several reference checks via checkboard. It really is amazing. Much much cheaper than traditional referencing (last time I paid it was 5 pounds), but it does so much more.
Apparently they have bots to check bank accounts to ensure that rent has been paid regularly, or the potential tenant has received a regular salary etc.
In the recent reference checks I got carried out, not only did I get all the usual information of CCJs, previous address, employment etc, but I also got copies of their work contracts, proof of ID, address proofs etc. So there was really no paperwork for me to collect. If the tenants pass, you are automatically eligible for rent guarantee insurance.
I have used this on many occasions and I can't imagine carrying out reference checks in the traditional way now.
These guys deserve to be much more popular.
