Simple and easy way for the firm and clients to process payments and set up payment plans. Emails can be sent through Clio with a secure payment link where clients can pay with a debit or credit card without having to travel into the office.

Clio offers robust hyperlinked data and a deeply integrated search field

Clio offers robust, hyperlinked data and features so that you can easily navigate through the platform's different areas. While many law firm CMS platforms struggle to make so much data digestible, Clio's intuitive layout and deeply-integrated search field allow you to search contacts, matters, and files to find what you need quickly. Clio is always evolving, proving that their engineers are committed to making it a living software service.

I wish I would have done more research…

I wish I would have done more research before I signed up with Clio. I used them several years ago for billing only, so I just went with it. First, their onboarding process was a mess. The person that put us with didn't even show up for our first session. Then, we sent documents for creation and what they sent back was worse than what we sent them. We never got a proper onboarding, we never got to use most of their platform. I cancelled before the first month, and then they charged me. I guess if you are a medium to large sized firm that has the time, money, and resources to integrate this into your platform, it might work well. They should not even offer this as an option for a small firm or sole practitioner. There are better, less expensive options out there and that money grab is awful.

Misrepresentation During Sales Process and No Accountability After Purchase

My issue with Clio is not about the quality of the software or its general policies. It is about how the product was sold to me and how the company handled the situation after it became clear that the sale was based on false information.

Before purchasing Clio, I explicitly informed their sales team that my company is dedicated exclusively to immigration document preparation and administrative support, not legal representation. I specifically asked whether a bar license was required to use the platform, including core features such as receiving client payments and setting up payment plans. I was clearly told that a bar license was not required.

Relying on that representation, I purchased the software. After onboarding, Clio unilaterally disabled my ability to receive payments and offer payment plans, precisely because I do not hold a U.S. bar license. This directly contradicts what was represented to me before the sale.

When I raised this issue and explained that the purchase was made based on incorrect information provided by Clio, the company refused to take responsibility and declined to issue a refund. Instead, they retained my money despite acknowledging that the platform could not be used as promised for my disclosed business model.

This is not a disagreement over terms of service or a misunderstanding of compliance rules. This is a case where a product was sold based on assurances that later proved to be false, and the company chose to keep the payment rather than correct its own mistake.

Selling a product under misleading representations and then refusing to refund once those representations are proven inaccurate is unacceptable and raises serious concerns about Clio’s sales ethics and accountability.

I strongly recommend that potential customers—especially non-lawyer professionals—obtain all representations in writing and independently verify them before purchasing.

Sync issues with Xero

If a problem is not immediately fixable, customer support goes silent. We are having issues with payments receipted in Xero not synchronising with Clio properly. Errors are common. Would not recommend Clio to users of Xero in Australia.

Clio is inept.

I closed my account with Clio months ago but they continue to bill my card. Attempting to speak with someone is always met with, "wrong department". Clio is the single worst company I've done business with in a while.

No way to put a claim number or a tax…

No way to put a claim number or a tax ID number on invoices, no way to write a check for a refund to a client that has overpaid an invoice, no way to properly put a credit card payment on a matter, loading documents and saving them for use is a total disaster, when you send invoices, unless you forget to uncheck a box, you send an invoice telling your adjuster a grand total of all invoices outstanding for multiple matters when you just want to send them one invoice for one file. There is no way to permanently turn this feature off... so if you forget... oh boy. onboarding was TERRIBLE. I am searching for another option after two months.

I use Clio as a client

I use Clio as a client - it’s my attorney’s platform that I have to use.

I find it cumbersome and more recently, the two factor authentication feature fails 8/10 times. This especially frustrating as I sometimes need access to documents that need a quick response from me, and I’m not able to get to them.
I called the support number but was thrown into an automated CS loop and there was no option for me to pick that would deal with my problem.
Clio for clients functions are remedial at best. There’s no search feature to get to documents quickly. It simply tracks a chronological list of docs. It also struggles to handle large files such as pictures or videos. I wound up having to drop a lot of evidence into Box so that I could get it to my attorney.
I don’t know what you guys are paying for this, but its functionality is really basic. And customer support really sucks for your clients.
Make sure to check out multiple options when shopping for this kind of software. I’d think that more functionality is out there.

Clio does not deserve any rating higher…

Clio does not deserve any rating higher than 1 star. I paid for a year in advance for their Grow and Manage. This was not an annual charge; I felt it was easier to just pay it. What I did not expect was the terrible service (really bad) and the lack of a formatted application to apply to my criminal practice. It finally got so bad, I went over to LawPay. But guess what happened to the money I paid them; you guessed it, they told me they are keeping it. This is one of the sorriest legal software businesses I have dealt with. Go to LawPay -at least you will deal with an honorable business and a functioning product.

Hi Debra,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback — I'm very sorry to hear about your experience. I understand how frustrating it must have been.

I'm glad to hear you've successfully onboarded to LawPay and have found a system that better fits your current needs.

Regarding your refund request, as outlined in Clio's cancellation policy, annual subscriptions are non-refundable once activated, even if the account is cancelled before the end of the term. We’re unable to approve a partial refund in accordance with Section 9.3 of Clio’s Terms of Service, which all of our customers accept during the signup process. Because yearly subscribers receive a discount by committing to a full year, user licenses are purchased for the entire annual term, and refunds or credits cannot be issued for unused time.

As outlined in our Terms of Service:

“No refunds or credits will be issued for partial periods of service, upgrade/downgrade refunds, or refunds for periods unused with an active subscription, including, but not limited to, instances involving the removal of a Subscriber.”

You will l, however, continue to have full access to your Clio account and data until the end of your prepaid period.

Thank you again for sharing your experience — your feedback helps us improve, and I truly regret that your time with Clio didn't meet your expectations.

Long Time Clio User

I've used Clio since they started in 2008. It was a bit of a leap of faith in my part, but after spending time with the founders at a conference, I just had the sense they were good people and were going to have a solid product in the early days of cloud-based practice management software.

I wasn't wrong.

Clio has continued to develop, launch cutting-edge features, and achieve tremendous growth. It has been a major part of my practice and helped my staff and I deliver top-notch client service and work efficiently. Although Clio is no longer the small start-up in Vancouver, their service and support has remained the best in the industry.

I know this because at one point, I tried another product. I wanted to try another solution after being on the platform for many years. About a year and a half later, I was back with Clio. They have the best product and support, and their new AI features recently announced are ushering in a major transformation in the practice management space.

extremely long refund times.

I made a payment for lawyer fees to a firm that used this software. There was a miscommunication with expectations so the law firm refunded me the payment. I get a notification from Clio stating that it will take 5-10 BUSINESS DAYS before my money is back in my account. I needed this money to retain another lawyer for a case on Friday(2 days away. They only refunded me today).

So now I do not have the funds to hire another lawyer which will leave me unrepresented which will end up costing me much more than the 1k that is owed to me. How on earth does it take 5-10 business days to issue a refund? I was going to use this firm for my divorce but now they will lose my business and any other firm that uses this software.

We’re sorry to hear about your experience and understand how stressful it can be when timing around refunds impacts an important legal matter.

To clarify, Clio is the software provider used by law firms to manage their client payments and cases, but we do not directly process or control client refunds. The refund timeline you received is set by the payment processor and your financial institution, which can take up to 5–10 business days depending on bank processing times.

We encourage you to reach out directly to the law firm that processed your payment for the most up-to-date information on your refund status.

I signed up for this service with a one-week trial, but as soon as I discovered it was missing the most important tool I use for my business, I canceled immediately and asked for a refund. They refused, hiding behind a “no refund policy,” even though I barely used the service and canceled right away.
This is not only poor customer service, but also misleading. A trial should give customers the chance to evaluate a product without risk. Instead, they keep your money even if the service doesn’t deliver what you need.
If you are considering signing up, be very careful. They do not stand behind their service and do not value their customers.
