Not really feeling it...

According to Codecademy.com, I'm about 15% of the way through my python course. However I find the site very frustrating. They teach as though I have a photographic memory. I do practice sessions to try and master what I've learned but the practice sessions are either far too easy, or too hard. The most frustrating thing for me is the sort of lazy way in which the assignments are explained. They give minimal instructions. The upside is that I can use an interactive AI chatbot to get help. Unfortunately, that chatbot is not available during practice sessions.

Very bad writing/content.

The course structure is good but the content is some of the worst written that I have ever come across in learning to code. The structure and thinking of the lessons and scenarios is truly abysmal. I've found that a lot of my time has been just trying to understand the simple thing that they are very badly explaining. I wouldn't reccomend doing their courses.

Excellent Learning Platform for All Skill Levels

I’ve had a great experience using Codecademy. The lessons are clear, interactive, and well-structured, which makes it much easier to stay focused and actually retain what I learn. I especially appreciate the instant feedback when coding — it helps me learn through doing, not just reading or watching.

The platform covers a wide range of topics, from beginner basics to more advanced concepts, and it’s constantly updated with current tools and languages. The projects and quizzes are also really helpful for applying what I’ve learned.

Overall, Codecademy offers incredible value, especially for the price. Whether you’re starting from scratch or looking to upskill, I highly recommend it!

Shady renewal practices

Bought Pro over a year ago on their 50% offer, which was a great deal and I do believe the product is good.
I used it for a few months and then fell out of the loop with the practice, in the past several months I have been getting repeated and incessant emails advertising "sign up to get 50% off pro" to the same email address I'd previously purchased the offer at - I incorrectly assumed this meant I had at some point cancelled my sub to avoid the recurring full price bill, and these emails were encouragement to sign up again at the sale price.

Wrong. I got a recurring bill for the full price on my credit card, AND still am getting the advertising emails for 50, and now today 60% off. During this process I did not get a single reminder email regarding my subscription which is standard practice on annual billing with others I've used like MasterClass.

I tried replying to their emails asking why I was getting the advertising emails while being charged full price in the background, and got nothing.

Highly unethical company.

I would give it 0 if there was the option to do so!!

they MASSIVELY over-promise the value you can get out of their courses, that aren't up to date. the "professional" certifications are a glorified version of their free plan, holding your hand tightly like a kindergarten toddler, whilst at the same time leaving out FUNDAMENTAL explanations. i regret wasting my time with this, FREE courses on Youtube do a better job at teaching you than this.

Love this

Love this. It is very good, and teaches how to code in a simple way. And, you can learn how to code in a certain amount of time, which is very quick. A brilliant website, don't mind if you have to pay, cause you can already get a free course. I'm learning JavaScript and use it every day so I can code for later life and it makes it so much easier. Thank you for whoever made this. You are great. Love it, 5 Stars.

Computer science student at university…

Computer science student at university here.

I was looking for some additional resources to learn more about data science/machine learning and other fields in comp science, as well as some real-life style code projects to do. I heard of codeacademy many, maannyy times in the past, so I bought a free trial and decided to try it.

I did not have pleasant experience to be fair - the code practice sections are basically hand-holding fest with making you type code exactly as they tell you. For me this is not a good learning method as I feel like I am learning nothing.

Codeacademy offers portfolio project which don’t have hand-holding but there’s very few of them.

I am not sure, probably this style of teaching is good for other people but I’d rather to move to textbooks and other learning resources and cannot recommend Codeacademy.

Very Unhelpful service

I am a university graduate and was looking for a new career path and came across this. On the phone they convinced me that this was possible to do alongside full time work and a masters which is not possible. The starting steps are unclear and for the first month I was actually doing the wrong course which therefore led to added stress regarding meeting deadlines etc. I have had multiple emails with them back and fourth explaining my situation and told them that look this is just not for me and it’s not feasible for me to do this course alongside the Masters and work (like they told me).I understand the refund policy I have just asked them for a little bit of help regarding at least a partial refund as I haven’t even touch any of the materials needed to pass the course. I didn’t want to come to giving this review but this seems like this could be the only way to get through to them. They are not having any of it and now I have paid £1400 for something I don’t have the time for nor even have the passion to do as I realised that this course just isn’t for me. Also, if you pay monthly you can cancel the subscription anytime, but when u pay in full this completely irradiates the chance of a refund? Seems ludicrous.

Really unhappy with the service as a whole (both customer service and the learning tools provided).

Admitted to double charging me – then refused to refund

I’ve had an extremely disappointing experience with Codecademy over a billing issue that remains unresolved.

In 2023, I was charged for two separate subscriptions under two different email addresses. I only used one of the accounts. The other was created after what seemed like a failed signup—there was no confirmation on the website, and I assumed the process hadn’t gone through. As a result, I ended up unknowingly paying for two subscriptions for over a year.

In April 2024, I contacted Codecademy support and clearly referenced two unexpected charges—one of which related to the unused account. I asked for clarification and a refund, but received no reply.

When I followed up in 2025, they acknowledged the second account and attempted to issue a refund, but said it was no longer possible due to system limitations. Instead, they offered account credit, which I declined. Despite this, they applied credit anyway rather than issuing a refund.

To recap:
• I was charged for a subscription I never used.
• I disputed the charge while a refund was still possible.
• Codecademy failed to respond at the time.
• They later admitted the double billing but refused to refund me.
• I was offered credit after explicitly declining it.

I’ve now submitted a chargeback and filed complaints with Swiss and EU consumer protection agencies.

I’m sharing this experience to warn others. Check your billing history carefully. If anything goes wrong, support may be unresponsive, and even when they acknowledge a mistake, they may not refund you.

they lure you in with a well laid out tutorials and lessons but as you go to the more complex stuff you soon see how poorly they have laid out the content and your forced to find external material to complete the lessons as they failed to explain how to do certain things. look if im paying $400 AUD i expect to have all the material there ready to go, if i wanted to go find everything i would have just done the free option and learned through yt which is miles better

Numerous significant problems

Numerous significant problems. Codecademy Full-stack engineer course is quite/very dishonest about how long it takes to complete each section of the course. The current section I'm on says 150 hours total to complete, but the estimates are wildly out, sometimes with as little as 5 minutes for a project with 18 separate sections that takes hours to finish, or a full article 5 screens long given >1min to read.

Expect it to take minimum twice as long as suggested for many parts. Sometimes, literally all day for a free-reign app build from scratch rated at 30 mins completion.

For context, I have a distinction at MSc Educational Psychology from a top-rated UK university.

The barrage of technical information is like a fire hydrant and does not allow you to process the information or properly use it in a way that you can understand. Most of the time, you're just following instructions to type in code that you don't understand the contextual application of.

Many review questions are just the same ones on repeat and left already filled in the same way you typed them last time, meaning they're already done for you.

My recommendation is not to touch this company for any reason

Unfortunately I cannot give code academy a negative rating as they don’t have this feature on trustpilot

My daughter’s school IT teacher recommended code academy… as a tool my daughter found it useful

As a parent paying the bill I can say that these people are absolute leeches sucking the money out of the account even when subscribing monthly, cancelling the account and putting a stop on the credit card company

Don’t touch this company unless you want to have money sucked out of you

When a block was put in place by the credit card company they just changed merchant numbers to overcome the block on payment

If the second block doesn’t work I will cancel my credit card

What a terrible level of customer care and service. We would have used the service again when my daughter had more time again. There is no chance I would use this ‘service’ or company and there is no chance I would recommend it.

I will be taking action by working with the school to stop promoting this awful ‘service,

My recommendation is not to touch this company for any reason
