A most unpleasant experience w Customers Bank
On September 2, 2025 I found that someone fraudulently applied for a PPP Loan using my name and former home address as the business address of a used car place of business. Customers Bank approved the loan on 4/21/2021 for the amount of $20,833.
• I have never applied for a PPP loan.
• My former address is a single-family house in a suburban subdivision. I sold the property in August 2016.
• I have never been employed in the used car business. I am a 40-year RN. My credit bureau reports show my healthcare employment.
• Due to previous breeches of my data with a 3rd party healthcare clearinghouse, AT&T, Experian, and the IRS, I am aware my data is on the dark web. My credit bureau accounts have been frozen since 2012.
I have reported the fraudulent PPP loan to the FTC, SBA, and Customers Bank (the lending institution, guaranteed by the SBA). I have reviewed and placed fraud alerts on my 3 credit bureau reports.
All of the above was shared in my initial report to Customers Bank. When I attempted to get info from Customers Bank, the Help Desk rep was evasive and misleading despite multiple emails and attempts to get the information.
• I asked to know if any money was disbursed to the applicant.
• I asked how Customers Bank was able to access my credit bureau reports as all have been frozen since 2012
• I asked where the applicant received their loan documents e.g. email, snail mail.
• I asked with whom I was communicating via the Customers Bank PPP Help Desk (directed to by the FTC).
• I asked for a telephone number so that I could speak with a representative of the Bank.
The rep responded
• using the wrong loan number for “my” account.
• answered only one of my questions – no money was disbursed to the applicant.
• provided a telephone number for the PPP Hotline which was no longer in service.
• asked me to provide my Social Security number via email for validation of my identity.
• Advised that the loan was cancelled because it was not approved. I sent the rep screenshots from the SBA’s myPortal site showing the loan was approved by Customers Bank on 4/21/2021 in the amount of $20,883 with a Maturity Date of 4/21/2026.
I asked for a copy of the Customers Bank loan documents. I was advised that I would need to provide Customers Bank with copies of my police report and my Identity Theft report to the FTC, a copy of my drivers license, and a signed and notarized Affidavit of Identity Theft. IF only Customers Bank would have been so diligent in proving the identity of the fraudulent borrower, we wouldn’t be here today.
