Fantastic weekly webinars - thank you!

The Thursday lunchtime webinars run by the Data Science Festival have been fantastic. They are a really great resource to be inspired what some of the work that other people are doing. I found the level of the talks to be good blend of the basic consepts for people who are new-ish to the field and more techniqual explainations of how a project was actually executed and why it was done that way. Thank you to DSF for organising and hosting them and to all the speakers for the work they have put in. I have been reminded of why I started into Data Science and would love to attend the festival in Nov. for more of the same.

DSF Manchester with N Brown Group

Fantastic event held on 18 February at the Data Science festival hosted by N Brown Group in Manchester. I am told they are one of Manchester's oldest and biggest companies, which hold a rich history of innovation in both retail and distribution; this was really evident at the event.

The formal part of the evening was some great talks delivered by the professionals making up the N Brown Group data team.

The presentations highlighted many work areas, such as Data Science, ML engineering, Strategic analytics, all of which were well represented in the evening as a whole. The live examples demonstrated the strength of their products and teamwork.

The financials were well explained by the director of Data Science.

Elements of the evening included the following talks, which were the highlights of the evening for me.

My first choice was a talk that described an approach for profiling and understanding customer segmentation, where their main segments were neutral or loss making, good and profitable. Details were given regarding the features used for modelling customers.

Then I enjoyed an intuitive explanation of optimization using XGBoost through a lemonade profit maximisation example. The key takeaway message was that XGBoost allows the creation of custom loss functions for building a model that directly optimises the model's true objective.

Culminating in, a talk on Image recognition showed some innovative use-cases leveraging deep learning techniques such as product tagging, visual search, style matching, style generation and virtual wardrobes.

The networking opportunities, and refreshments were to a high standard. The whole event left me feeling welcomed and informed.

A must-go data event

From a perspective of a non-Data Scientist:
- Talks were inspiring and informative: a showcase of many quality speakers. Lots of interesting topics blew my mind. It's a very good way to explore data science as a profession from different angles. I am inspired to learn more about data science in details after the event.
- Friendly fellows: from attendees to recruiters (even I am not their target audience)
- Smooth logistics; concise and in-time comms
- Highly impressed by the no-cost-to-attendees model. Inspired me to do similar things on other topics.

Great work team. Thank you for all the hard work. Looking forward to your next round!

Insightful, Informative, Friendly!

Great event that provided plenty of insight from the data science team at N Brown Group - from outlining business process to getting into the nitty gritty of developing their Customer Lifetime Value model.

The free drink and pizza was a winner too!

Data in research and in industry: Prediction and interpretation

There were two talks, one about Data science in industry and one more focused upon research. I thought that the speakers went to great lengths to explain complex ideas in understandable ways so that even without a background of terms it was possible to gain a lot from listening. I will definitely follow up and try to find out more about data science as a result. The organisers were also very generous and we had refreshments. Lastly, I met some interesting people who were very approachable so I would really recommend to anyone to go along. I don't live in Bristol at the moment and I was really pleased to get a ticket to go. Thank you very much to everyone involved.

Insightful, friendly, nice event

Well organised post work meet up about Data Science in practice in a retail business. Nice format of 4 speakers and topics - well done to in house speakers in front of a good sized crowd. All very smooth set up and organisation and topics pitched nicely to be challenging but not too complex.

Excellent meet up

Excellent meet up, providing useful information from across a very different type of business to what I've been used to, and yet still showing that Data Science can be used anywhere.
