Hill Skills weekend course

Excellent course (Hill Skills) really clear and practical, and built my confidence too. Before the weekend course I couldn’t read a map, now I can plan and follow routes on my own with an understanding of what I’m actually doing. Tom explained things in a simple way that made sense, and I felt supported throughout. I learned how to use a compass properly, read contours, and make safer decisions in different weather conditions. It was a really useful and enjoyable experience that’s given me the confidence to explore the hills more independently.

Excel Outdoors does exactly that

Excel Outdoors does exactly that - allows you to excel outdoors! I signed up to a Lowland Leaders training course, delivered by an instructor/facilitator/leader named Tom Kelly. Tom proved to be extremely knowledgeable together with experience that shone throughout! I left the course feeling much more confident than when I went in, and enthused by what I'd learned over the two days. Thank you so much, Tom, and indeed Excel Outdoors- a highly-recommended, must-do course for those who wish to lead ventures into the great outdoors for schools, colleges, other organisations or just to learn more from a personal perspective. Wonderful! Stanley O. Ayodeji.

Superb Training and Experience

The training weekend for the Lowland Walks Leader was brilliant! The location was great for practising the skills that I had gone to learn. It was interesting as we were always on the go and our instructor gave us lots of extra knowledge about the woodland, flora and fauna as we walked. I came away from the weekend with my skills in place and completely happy that I can go and practise these before returning for the final assessment. A superb experience!

Despite the rain it did not stop us…

Despite the rain it did not stop us from searching for mushrooms. And Wow! we were not disappointed, found a variety of wild mushrooms all shapes and sizes. Tom introduced to us what is safe and more importantly what isn't safe and if in doubt just don't pick.
Our group on the day were very friendly and helped one another. We even got to taste some mushrooms at the end, oh and a sample of very tasty homemade brandy mmmmmm. Super day to get out walking, chatting. Great for your mental health too :) Would definitely recommend and look forward to the next one.

Tom and his team of leaders are immense!

Tom and his team of leaders are immense!

The team are all well qualified and well versed in their respective fields and the courses that they run are exceptionally planned, executed and followed up on.
I completed a lowland leader qualification with the team from Excel and I felt thoroughly supported throughout.
Prior to starting a course or navigation intro day with them, they will explain fully what is going to happen, give you all the support and guidance you need and will fully meet your expectations of what good practice looks like in outdoor leadership.
