Avoid this Company
We rented a Range Rover through this company, and in the middle of our lease period we opened our front door to a large, muscular man representing the company.
He came into our house and put our toddler son’s car seat in the hallway and claimed the car had been left unlocked overnight and this breached our rental terms and so the car was being taken back.
We had had the car for 3 weeks at this point, and had always ensured both locking the car as well as putting on the additional steering lock. Before making his presence known or letting us know of any issue, He had already broken into the car using a second set of keys, moved the vehicle to a different street. Prior to this, the car had been parked outside the house, with the steering lock intact, just as we had left it, with no evidence that it had been broken into.
He offered no proof that the car had been left unlocked and only referred to a third-party security alert raised around 2am (nothing was provided to us by the company at this time). He demanded our set of keys and stated that he had to take the car. Our toddler son was upstairs and myself and my wife felt physically intimidated by him, and with few courses of action open to prevent removal of the car (it had already been moved, he had keys).
After he had departed, I immediately called the company. They repeated that there had been a security alert raised around 2am and that it was their procedure to recover the car. They again offered no evidence that the car had been left unlocked, or broken into. Further, they stated that it was their policy not to tell the hirer of the car of the security alert, so the first we heard of the supposed incident was the following morning with the car being taken away.
The Company has been entirely dismissive, arrogant and intransigent on their actions and in further communications with us, which they think are perfectly justified. These include
• Sending an “enforcer” to take possession of the car without even knocking on the door, using their own set of keys and taking it away
• Specific policy to NOT inform the customer if they think the car is unlocked (which gives them carte blanche to claim anything they like)
• Specific policy to NOT inform the customer or even the Police if they think the car is being stolen!
• Have the gall to claim that – without proof – the car being unlocked is a huge security issue whilst at the same time doing absolutely nothing about it except call a man 150 miles away 12 hours later to go and get the car.
As a final point, the company did NOT provide any Terms and Conditions of the hire in the several months leading up to us starting the lease. The first time we got them was on the back of the rental details sheet when picking up the car in a dark, Heathrow car park. They had previously omitted the Terms and Conditions when they sent me the rental details sheet, i.e. they specifically left them out.
For potential renters from this company, No.36 of these Terms and Conditions is as follows:
"36. The supplier reserves the right to terminate the rental and recover the vehicle anytime without prior notification or reason."
To reiterate, this will not be shared with you until you pick up the car. So be warned, the Company will make you sign a lease agreement where they can repossess the car at their will.
Lastly, it will hardly be a surprise to add that we have not been reimbursed either our security deposit or the balance of the rental period after the car was taken away. Legal action is now underway to recover both our money and claim damages.
