Great idea but flawed and may depend on a reviewer's writing style

Great idea, possibly more accurate for items with hundreds of reviews, but needs far more work. I suspect it may rely on certain words often used in marketing other than just someone with copy and paste skills to be deemed as fake reviews, or more unique writing styles in order to be deemed genuine..?.. but the results can sometimes be nonsensical regardless, eg for a pair of headphones with 72 reviews:

Least authentic review - 'Some reviews say that the cable is to long and heavy utter rubbish. With the right equipment these H/Phones are pound for pound unbeatable.'

Most Helpful Insights - 'Some reviews say that the cable is to long and heavy utter rubbish.'

Regardless, it's a project that's well worth continuing with and improving on, as the big two stores (amz, bay) are only getting worse with fake reviews and counterfeit and cloned products using brand names that do not really exist. The tool expanding and being able to work with more than just one or two major stores other than the above would also be helpful

If a dealer bad-mouths it

If a dealer bad-mouths it, it probably is a good product.
Think about a state insurance commissioner that is disliked by the insurance industry. Probably means they are the one to vote for.

It just doesn't work...yet

It just doesn't work. Fakespot is a noble idea, but they are not there yet. I really like the way the add-in is designed from a functionality perspective, but the AI needs to be ironed out.

The concept of fake spotting is very important. I think they will get it right, but for now, it isn't something I can trust. Hopefully, they are well funded because I really want them to succeed.

The company has been unresponsive for three weeks and three attempts to contact them.

The rating tool can look at the same exact data on two amazon ASINs (under the same parent ASIN/same review/same description) who have different colors and grades one with an A and the other an F. Doesn't make a whole bunch of sense.

Further, their knowledge base contains some misrepresentations. For instance, the cost of Vine on Amazon is not $2500-$7,500 ("To participate in Amazon Vine, sellers pay anywhere from $2,500 to $7,500 per product and provide free products.") but $200 flat. There is no expectation of friendly reviews, in fact, they are some of the harshest reviewers.

Fakespot is such an unreliable service

Fakespot is such an unreliable service. I've rated hundreds of items on various websites. Somewhere along the line I found out about Facespot. I thought, "Wow, a a site to help find out what crap reviews are out there! What a great service." So I checked them out. I've been checking out their ratings of reviews for around 8 months now and you just can't trust them either.

I've seen them rate items with hundreds and thousands of reviews with a D rating or not give them a rating for not having sufficient reviews and then something with as low as five 5 star reviews get an A grade, items with reviews where it was obvious the reviewers didn't actually use the product. I know because those experiences were impossible if someone actually used said products.

I put a lot of effort into writing reliable informative reviews and I've had more than one of my reviews pop up in their analysis as the least authentic review. I've read reviews they've marked most authentic, on things I've not even reviewed, which completely sound unauthentic.

Whatever algorithms they are using are garbage. They may as well come up with random grades. I find them highly unreliable.

Garbage In, Garbage out. LAWYER UP !!!!!

Fakespot issued a warning label for our business on Amazon. We have fulfilled thousands of orders online with only two complaints in the last two years and are rated as 4 stars out of five on Amazon. Yet Fakespot has issued this Warning label while providing none of their own reviews whatsoever, No A through F rating (only a ? provided), their own statement that "The product reviews were unavailable when we attempted to do our analysis". Our business has suffered as a result and we are in the process of collecting damages to file a lawsuit to get their attention. This is the equivalent of slander and I hope all other businesses similarly impacted will also sue Fakespot. As a former Systems Analyst, I refer back to the statement of Garbage IN, Garbage OUT.

" A REALLY DECEPTIVE FRAUD"

I am the accountant with a U of Michigan MBA upon reviewing the classifications of reviews, It appears their "AI" says reviews less than 10 words are "Real" and long reviews "FAKE" and long reviews with technical terms from an expert in the product area "REALLY FAKE" SO FAKESPOT "AI" I rate as " A REALLY DECEPTIVE FRAUD"

Had I known about Fakespot earlier it…

Had I known about Fakespot earlier it would have saved me a boatload of trouble! I'm so grateful to have found it several months ago. I use Mozilla for every purchase for the Fakespot add-on.
Before I knew about Fakespot I bought an item on Amazon that had 10,000+ (!!!) 5 Star reviews! It wasn't as advertised and when I attempted to use the return as stated in the ad page, the seller refused. Amazon wouldn't return my money "because they hadn't shipped it". 10,000 5 STAR REVIEWS! I finally had the bright idea to check the seller's own website = 1.5 stars and 100% complaints about product, service, and no return of funds paid. Guess what? Their website is no longer visible. HOW COULD AMAZON NOT HAVE KNOWN THIS?! I just thought to check what rating Fakespot has on this product on Amazon.. 1.5 stars! Yes, I absolutely LOVE and trust Fakespot and don't buy anything without it. Check yourself.... When Fakespot tells you the truth, find the company's own website to see the reviews there...

Horrible and Shady

I used this a while back and quickly became disillusioned with its reliability. However, curiosity made me try it out again, and this time I was horrified with the results. I used it on my own products and discovered that it accused me of deception. Wow. I assure everyone that I've never paid for a single review EVER, and I've never coerced anyone into writing one.

Then I used it on a competitor whom I thoroughly distrust and saw that that person got an A rating compared to my C. Obviously, FakeSpot is as fake as can be. Use it knowing that they are giving out terrible false information.

I love the FakeSpot plugin for Amazon

I love the FakeSpot plugin for Amazon. I think it's especially helpful to see how many vendors are butthurt that their products aren't promoted by the company.

I HAVE noticed an uptick in vendor reliability when shopping on Amazon since installing and using FakeSpot. And, on EBay, FakeSpot makes it slightly easier to avoid sellers with recent bad reviews.

Highly questionable app. Does anyone else find it strange that a product from a vendor on one website can have an [A] rating yet the same product on a different vendors site can have a [D] rating?

Hi jtb, Fakespot does not rate the quality of products. Instead, Fakespot rates the reliability of consumer reviews and third-party sellers. That's why your experience on one site is different vs. another. You can also click into the analysis to see the product page on our site and why the AI engine gave the grade it did. Now that you know this, we hope you give Fakespot another try and update your Trustpilot rating. (And apologies for the late response, we just started to use Trustpilot ourselves.)

Seems great at first, but has some serious issues

I have used Fakespot for about a year. At first I loved going on here and looking at a products review ratings and determining what products to trust and what to ignore. However, after using it for quite some time, I have noticed that it has increasingly been over critical of legitimate products that I know are good and I know are getting authentic good reviews. Once you see that a service like this can't be trusted for certain products, you wonder what it can be trusted for. After all, it's goal is to provide a more transparent product review by using algorithms that pick characteristics in reviews that they claim aren't really authentic. But if they themselves can't do the job right, than why use them in the first place? If you have to be skeptical of Amazon's original reviews, than it's logically futile to add another layer of skepticism to the mix.

It is ironic that Fakespot is fake

It is ironic that Fakespot is fake. Their analysis seems mostly guesswork, that's based on whether reviewers review other products, and some wording combinations, and whether the same people write reviews for the same company.

As an author who doesn't give af about reviews, I have never wasted my time soliciting them. There's a comment at the end of each of my books asking the reader to write one. But, I think we all know they mean so little.
As a reader who doesn't trust reviews, I read the summary of a book, check some of the top reviews, look at a couple of my book sites to see what others say, then read it. If the book doesn't marry up with the reviews, it automatically gets a 1 for trying to deceive me.
As consumers, we've become accustomed to reading each one, make up our minds whether they're real or fake, and continue based on our own hunches.

Fakespot trying to win us over as the tool that helps us do that in a snap, is a joke.

Wouldn't be surprised if legal action isn't taken against these fraudsters.

Also, it is suspicious that many products from China are rated quite highly...

Hi Fox, our analysis takes into account a myriad of factors - the Fakespot Engine uses state-of-the-art AI to detect eCommerce fraud and has been trained on billions of reviews.

Regarding your suspicions about seller location, there are millions of products that come from many countries so inevitably some will come from legitimate sellers with legitimate ratings. If you have particular cases you think are suspicious, we'll gladly investigate further - thus we’ve contacted you via Trustpilot to better understand your concerns and look forward to hearing from you.

False Claims about Reviewing Shopify…

False Claims about Reviewing Shopify Stores with No Data. I used to use their rating app on Chrome, but realized after doing some more digging that it isn't that accurate, but it also doesn't actually compile any data on Shopify stores that it claims to rate. This is completely a disservice to anyone trying to use their services. If you want to get into the why's, I think it's because they have more desire to put companies down than to help with valid ratings based on the language they're using in their marketing. This isn't a legitimate company.

Defamatory and Harmful to Legitimate Businesses

I thought this was brilliant until I ran it on a company I know has 0% fake reviews. It came up with loads of F's and D's that are all incorrect. I now believe this can be a devastating tool for legitimate and honest businesses and hope it will be improved to actually provide correct information that can be relied on. It's a shame that Fakespot.com do not respond to businesses they are incorrectly (defamatorily) promoting as fake to resolve this issue. To everyone who thinks it is displaying information that is correct and helpful, it is not. I will never trust or recommend it again until I see the incorrect false scores removed. Fakespot does not work as it is promoted to and the users do not know this. There is no trust or transparency in displaying genuine businesses and their products as fake. I have found Fakespot to be totally slanderous.
