Recommend YDNA testing at FTDNA

Unlike other DNA companies YDNA testing is available at FTDNA which helped find my Surname relations back past the blockage of the early 1800's. I would recommend it, test all the grandparents lines over time when the funds become available.

FTDNA testing has proved my family tree

I have used various dna testing companies to help me prove my family history and find FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA) the best for tracing surnames via its Y dna tests. Also for revealing deep ancestral origins. I have been administering several surname projects voluntarily with FTDNA over many years and doing family history research since the mid 1970s.

Some tests is a waste of money

Some tests is a waste of money
I tested Y37 and family finder and i thought i will get a more precise haplogroup at Y37 but it gave the same results as family finder haplogroup.
Why would someone test Y37 if family finder is there giving autosomal and haplogroup results!! Waste of money

Reply from FamilyTreeDNA

Hi there — thank you for your feedback, and we understand your frustration.

You're right that the basic haplogroup you receive from a Y-37 test can appear similar to the one provided through the Family Finder test, since Family Finder provides a broad haplogroup prediction based on autosomal data. However, that’s where the similarity ends.

Here’s what you get with Y-37 that you don’t get with Family Finder:
Y-37 gives you paternal-line DNA matches. Family Finder connects you with relatives from all branches of your family tree (up to ~5 generations back).

But only Y-DNA testing like Y-37 can:
- Connect you with other men who share your direct paternal line
- Help confirm surname lineages and migration patterns
- Support genealogical research hundreds or even thousands of years back through matching and haplogroup refinement

We hope this helps explain a bit further how Y-37 can help unlock powerful, lineage-specific DNA matches that autosomal tests can’t provide.

The DNA for genealogy company

This is the only place that allows you to do Y-DNA testing and track your matches to other males who have tested their Y-DNA. In addition to that they have provided great mitochondrial and autosomal DNA testing for about 20 years now.
They have always been and remain the premier company when it comes to DNA testing for genealogy.

Great help in my genealogical research

I have used FamilyTree DNA for genealogical research of my family and it's amazing. Apart from occasional technical issues with their website, I never had any problem. Their Big Y and mtDNA test are the best. It takes time to have these done but it's worth waiting. I am managing couple of familly projects and their support team is always helpful. We should have reasonable expectations when doing such ancestry testings as they are just the starting point of your research in your family history. All the work starts after the test and you have to do it yourself unless you hire some expert genealogist to help you out. Overall very satisfied.

Great tool for African American research.

Had my son test, his father is African American and wanted to see what we could find out about his paternal line, since their family name could be anything due to slavery. We wanted to know if his matches would lead to if, or, where his direct paternal line came from. Would it be African? Would it be European? Either way, would it give clues to where his people were pre-1865?

We had great results. He tested at 111 markers and initially, none of his matches had tested above 67. He had 4 or 5 matches at a distance of 2 steps. I reached out and heard back from two of them. Both shared as much info as possible, one upgraded to 111. When they still matched at 2 steps, both upgraded to the full Y and remained just as close. I can now trace my son's paternal line to England, ealy 1600's, to America 1650's, to North Carolina where his 5×great grandfather was born to a white man and an enslaved woman, brought to Mississippi, where he served in the Civil War before gaining his freedom and down to the present time. It has been a challenging but wonderful and rewarding journey.

I've also tested my own brother and we have almost no matches. I am patient and figure it just takes time for the right match to test.

I highly encourage those thinking of testing to go for it and just learn all you can so it isn't so frustrating.

High Quality YDNA Testing

The only game in town for high quality YDNA and mtDNA tests. I think many of the poor reviews here reflect a misunderstanding of what these tests are for and what one can learn from them.

FTDNA is the best company to test with.

I've tested myself with Full mito, autosomal, and BigY-700. I also administer the accounts for numerous friends and family, and I'm Co-admin of one surname project and Admin of another project. Understanding DNA as it relates to your Genealogy and ancestors depends on you learning all you can about how it works. It doesn't give you all the answers you may want answered. Put in the time to understand it and most of your questions will be answered. FTDNA is the most comprehensive testing company. They are the best.

A niche DNA testing company

A niche DNA testing company, the only one that both tests many markers and has matches. Their “Discover” feature predicts the year of birth of a common ancestor, which prediction landed as close as two years away from the actual. But I am most impressed by the potential of their tree of humankind.

I've been a Family Tree DNA customer since 2006

I've been a Family Tree DNA customer since the spring of 2006. I am more than satisfied with Family Tree DNA. The results are very accurate, and their customer service is great. I have learned a tremendous amount about my ancestry and my own genetic make-up via Family Tree DNA. They are the gold standard in DNA testing. Testing with Family Tree DNA is one of the smartest things I've ever done. I highly recommend Family Tree DNA.
