Always knit and wash the sample!
I ordered two cones of cashmir yarns and was at first dubious of the quality: the yarn didn’t feel as soft as I had expected. Then I made a big enough sample with three different sizes of needles and washed it the way instructed. And the result was great (with the biggest needles)! Without the sample I would surely have chosen wrong needles.
