They won’t return your deposit!

I had a very disappointing experience with Gascoigne Halman, particularly in how they handle tenant concerns versus landlord interests.

From the very beginning of the tenancy, we raised multiple issues regarding lack of proper hot water and an inadequate boiler system. We repeatedly contacted the agency, explaining that the hot water was not functioning properly and that the system required constant manual adjustment just to get basic hot water. This not only caused inconvenience for a family with children but also significantly increased our electricity costs due to repeated heating cycles.

Despite clear communication and follow-ups, no effective action was taken to resolve the issue.

Now, at the end of the tenancy, instead of fairly assessing the situation, the agency has aligned entirely with the landlord and is attempting to make unreasonable deductions from our deposit, including claims that are not properly supported with evidence.

It is particularly concerning that:
• Longstanding maintenance issues (including hot water problems) were not addressed
• Property condition issues such as damp were ignored during tenancy
• Yet, at check-out, these are being indirectly used against the tenant

This gives a clear impression that the agency prioritises landlords’ interests while failing to fairly represent or support tenants, even when legitimate concerns are raised during the tenancy.

I would strongly advise prospective tenants to:
• Document everything
• Follow up in writing
• Be cautious when dealing with deposit deductions

Unfortunately, this experience has shown a lack of balance, accountability, and fairness in how tenant matters are handled.

Positive review for the Sale branch

Julie Chapman at the Sale branch was extremely helpful on our sale and purchase. You could tell she really cares for her clients. Very thorough with her communication (more so than our conveyancers) which was so appreciated. Our transaction was quite a convoluted process with 5 parties in the chain, she kept us reassured throughout the year long wait!

Friendly professional Team

I found the team at Altrincham very professional and friendly. I had lived in my house for 27 years, so I found the whole process really stressful, especially when the first purchaser pulled out of the sale at the last minute. My house sold again straight away, and one member of staff in particular Joanne was very knowledgeable and reassuring, she was always willing to compromise and listened to any concerns I had, which was more than my solicitors did. I would use them again without hesitation. Thank you Jo x

Horrible Experience for first time buyer

I had a very disappointing experience buying through the Altrincham office, which would put me off using them again in the future. The whole process took 7.5 months and, while the delays were not Gascoigne Halman’s fault, the way the situation was handled made the experience extremely negative. I was made to feel as though I was in the wrong for asking for clarity by Gascoigne Halman ( Missing documents, lease info, incorrect parking space talked about for months) , and I felt pressured to complete even though my solicitors were advising me not to, i.e. I was called. at 3.45 on Friday saying that if I didnt complete by EOD the seller would put the house on the market. At this point we discrepencies between the sellers documents and the land registry . Overall, this resulted in a very unpleasant experience as a first-time buyer.

Even on the day I collected the keys, there was no congratulations from Gascoigne Halman, one agent would not even pick up her head, and the agents seems to purposely not put the bottle of Prosecco normally given, which further tainted what should have been a positive moment. Their lack of knowledge about the property was also concerning—particularly as I had viewed another property in the same block with Thornley Groves, who were extremely knowledgeable.

I was also unhappy with the way I was treated personally. On one viewing, when I asked to view the property with only the agent present so I could talk freely ( Property was empty with nobody living in it ), I was made to feel uncomfortable by a member of staff who I felt encouraged the seller to attend instead, stay and did not like me asking questions. After completing and receiving the full email records (accidentally to my solicitor ), I discovered this had been done deliberately, with the suggestion that having the seller present “might make me complete quicker,” despite the fact that we were still missing the full and complete lease at that point.

I would not recommend this agent to first-time buyers, as the way my purchase was handled completely tainted what should have been an exciting experience.

I had the pleasure of working with Ella…

I had the pleasure of working with Ella from Gascoigne Halman to sell my house, and I couldn’t be more impressed. She went above and beyond throughout the entire process, dealing with multiple issues quickly and professionally. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and her communication was excellent from start to finish.

Ella made what could have been a stressful experience incredibly smooth, and her commitment and dedication genuinely stood out. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking to buy or sell, and I would absolutely use her again in the future.

Thanks again, Ella!

Depends on what you want

Very good when dealing with renting out a property. Great, fast communications, friendly service.

However, managing the property is below par. I have to chase up things and still waiting for a contractor re heating in the freezing temperatures.

We recently sold our home in Altrincham…

We recently sold our home in Altrincham through Gascoigne Halman and couldn’t be happier with the service we received. From start to finish, the team was professional, proactive and incredibly supportive.
A special thank you to Joanna, whose speed, efficiency and clear communication made the entire process run smoothly. She kept us updated at every stage and was always quick to respond to any questions we had.
We would also like to thank Robert for his help in getting our property onto the market so promptly and presenting it in the best possible light. His advice and guidance from the outset gave us real confidence in the process.
Overall, we’re extremely pleased with the service and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gascoigne Halman to anyone looking to sell in the area.

Awful management and communication

As per all the other negative reviews - terrible communication - poorly written emails, unprofessional in manner and just awful to deal with. From moving into property, water pressure issues and constant cold showers. After months of back and forth was told (by a manager) 'oh well you are on a rolling contract, so you can just find another property' as appose to just having the issue fixed? Turns out it was a pump needed for the boiler, and of course the landlord did not want to pay as it was 'expensive'. It wasn't. Paying over a grand a month for no hot showers and terrible management is expensive. Clearly they prioritise landlords and not tenants. We left as suggested and do not recommend for renting at all - save your self the stress and sour puss faces.

100% recommend Gascoigne Halman Glossop!

We recently bought our first home through Gascoigne Halman in Glossop, and the whole experience was incredible thanks to Karen and the team. As first-time buyers, we honestly didn’t know where to start, but they explained every step so clearly and made the process feel straightforward and stress-free.

Karen was always available to answer our (many!) questions and nothing was ever too much trouble. She made us feel genuinely cared for, not just like another customer, and really gave us that personal touch from the very first viewing right through to completion.

A special mention also to Danielle, our mortgage broker, who was just as supportive and approachable. Both of them went above and beyond for us — whether it was chasing solicitors, setting out clear deadlines, or just keeping us reassured when things felt overwhelming.

We felt like part of the Gascoigne family, and we’re so grateful for how smooth and enjoyable they made what could have been a stressful process. We’d 100% recommend Gascoigne Halman (and especially Karen and Danielle) to anyone buying or selling a home.

Worst agent I have ever seen

This company is really unprofessional but leading the Altrincham area due to less competitors in the market. By mistake they send some emails to me as Tenant and actually were supposed to send landlord suggesting that they can increase the rent and committed to another contract so on. In the otherway round Landlord sair I want to go away from them and its waste of money on Managed service.
Really unpleasant business their doing in this market. Stay away from them. Local council should come up with certain rules towards this kind of cunning businesses

I would give less stars if possible

I would give less stars if possible

During the tenancy it started already. the garage door fell down TWICE. and it took them 10 months to fix. Only when i started to not pay the full rent they started acting fixing it 2 months before we needed to leave the premisis

Altough they make a check in and check out report they dont look at it. Claiming ridiculous amounts of money for things that where already like that before we moved in as visible on the checkin report.

We've been waiting for 2months now to get our deposit back and they keep answering once every 3weeks if we're lucky and if they read our 10emails every 3 weeks to remind them

If I could give them 0 stars I would.

If I could give them 0 stars I would.
From the outset they seem great, but as soon as the agreement is signed they stop caring about anything except getting the rent in each month.
They'll happily let themselves in without speaking to you, they say that they only have to send an email 24hrs in advance.
They never return calls. They ignore maintenance requests and then try to say that you damaged things that never worked and were highlighted on the initial move in.
As for returning your deposit, I am currently going through a claim against them through the dps as after 4 weeks of vacating at the end of tenancy, they have not done a thing woth regards to authorising the return of deposit. Once you aren't paying them rent anymore, they won't return calls, messages, emails. Go in in person and funnily enough, "oh sorry, they've left for the day and I work in a different dept. I'll leave them a message and get them to call you in the morning"

AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Landlords Beware!

Landlords beware! Three postgraduate student Drs moving from Scotland to complete their clinical training in the Manchester hospitals for three years were looking to rent a good, clean property in Didsbury with a generous budget. Best tenants you could ever hope for-offering UK based parental guarantors if required too. We saw a potential property and so rang this company and I will say that at least they answered the call, unlike some other
Didsbury letting agents, but the call handler was dire! She was immediately negative-along the lines of well, I’ll have to put you on a waiting list if you want to view that one…Therefore, I tried to engage her on what we were looking for to see if there were any other possible properties to view but she was very clearly disinterested and desperate to get off the phone. I can’t understand why Landlords use letting agents like this one-I would have been so annoyed had I been a Landlord and known this company was simply passing over good tenants like these and it must be happening all the time which is why I’m writing the review so that Landlords are aware. A horribly negative experience with this Agency and others around the Didsbury area. I can safely say that based on our experience, these agents are definitely not serving the best interests of their client landlords. I fully recommended OpenRent-a beautiful property has been secured with absolutely no fuss whatsoever because we have been able to communicate directly with the Landlord-all messages and calls followed up and almost by return too. These letting agents need to seriously up their game and start treating prospective tenants and their enquiries with more interest, respect and professionalism.

Very Poor Customer Service!

the lettings division are very poor, they are very quick at taking your money, but when something goes wrong they take an eterinty to return or respond to emails or telephone calls.

Once you have vacated you cant get your secured dposit back, again the communication process and customer service is no existant.
