I would not trust them to sell me a car....

In spite of some of the poorer reviews we read about his garage we decided to go and test drive a Peugeot 508 SW selling for under £16000, which was our maximum budget.

Although we booked a test drive for a specific time, when we got there the car was at the back, 3 rows deep and filthy. No effort whatsoever had been made to make the car look anything like it did in it's pictures. We were left waiting while the car was extracted and brought to the front, and at no point were we offered a drink, which would have been a nice touch.

To be fair the sales person did point out some of the scuffs and marks on the car, and we were assured they would be addressed pre-sales. When the car was started the 'Service' warning spanner was illuminated, and we were told this is just overdue a service (or maybe not). On taking the car out for a drive the overwhelming smell of stale cigarette smoke was terrible. Worse than that was the poor performance of the car.

Driving up Bedhampton Hill towards the A27 (a very slight hill) I could barely get the car to 30mph. Then, when driving down the on-slip to the A27 (it is a declining road) the car barely got to 50mph in 'sport mode' with my foot flat the floor! This was quite enough of a test drive for us, it was bordering on dangerous, so we went back to the garage.

I explained the issues to the sales person and he assured me that the car was probably in limp mode and that it would be looked at the next day (Monday) and he would call me with the outcome. I was concerned that we were sent out in a car, in limp mode for a test drive.

Over a week later and nothing, so today I called and asked about the car. I was informed that nothing had been done, and it would probably be looked at today, Monday 30th March. Probably, or probably not?

My guess is that they are hoping someone with less experience with cars would just buy it 'as is'. I also noticed that the car, in 1 week, had gone up in price a fair bit, now listed at £16,195 (previously listed at circa £15,500).

When I asked how this could happen on a car that has potentially serious issues, I was told they do not set their prices, Autotrader do. Which if you are gullible enough to believe, then good luck!

A quick lookup on poor performance gave this result:
"Poor performance in a 2021 Peugeot 508 often stems from known issues like timing belt degradation, oil consumption, or software glitches. Key symptoms include sluggish acceleration, engine warning lights, and jerky transmission, with potential causes including wet belt failure, engine component issues, and faulty electronics."

In summary I found the staff helpful, but just enough to make a sale. The car was dirty and not as shown in the advert, and the information I was given regarding valeting, repairs and price are all wildly inaccurate.

I am so please I did not purchase The Peugeot 508 SW (with related scuffs, marks, dents, missing boot cover and potential engine issues) which is still up for sale at an inflated price, thanks to Autotrader(???), if you wish to believe that? Buyer beware. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark!

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your feedback.

I'd like to start by apologising that the vehicle wasn't accessible when you arrived, however I can see you were booked in on a busy Sunday afternoon, we have 2 staff members that work on a Sunday and sometimes if the diary is full, we struggle with having every vehicle out and ready due to space restrictions on site and manpower. (We'd love to have more staff available, like our main-dealer competition, but we are a small, family run business and with the ongoing cost hikes in all aspects, it can be very difficult to always have a surplus of staff available whilst trying to manage the running costs of a independent local business.)

I'm glad my sales exec pointed out the scuffs on the vehicle, I can only assume he explained that these would be rectified before sale.

In regards to limp mode, we would never knowingly send a customer out on a test drive in a vehicle that had mechanical issues. However, the nature of the beast when dealing with over 70 pre-owned vehicles, is that you sometimes are faced with unforeseen mechanical problems. I apologise that this tainted your test drive.

We currently have over 20 vehicles that are reserved for customers, that are going through the final preparation process, which consumes the large majority of our service diary. The reason the Peugeot has not been rectified yet, is not down to neglection, it is due to time constraints. We only have a fixed amount of technician hours available each week and sadly we have to prioritise vehicles that have been reserved and booked in for collection.

In regards to our pricing, when you called today for an update (even after your bad experience when first viewing the car), you were informed that the vehicle had gone up in price. We update all of our prices weekly, to keep in line with the market average (Autotrader pricing guidelines). Autotrader do not SET our pricing, we simply use their recommended pricing as they are the market leaders and provide the most accurate price points. I can assure you that the Peugeot is not online at an 'inflated' price, it is stated as 'Good price' on Autotrader as of 5 minutes ago when I checked. I would imagine there would be no complaints if the vehicle had dropped £600 in value, so customers must also understand when the market value increases.

I am understanding that your in-depth, 1-star negative review comes from 3 factors:

1. The vehicle not being accessible when you first arrived and not in the condition you had hoped
2. The vehicle going into limp mode upon test-drive and not rectified in your expected time frame
3. The vehicles market value increasing in the time between your initial test drive and phone call today.

2 out of 3 of these points, we have no possible control over, so its really disappointing to see that you've shared a negative review based on them.

We will continue to try to provide the best possible experience for our customers, but are well aware that we may not be able to meet everyone's expectations.

Kind regards
Jack - Director

GRAVEL HILL CAR SALES

GRAVEL HILL CAR SALES, based in Havant, Hampshire.
What a FANTASTIC, PROFESSIONAL service they offer. Stress-free and welcoming atmosphere.
I purchased my latest car from here 18/03/2025 and drove away with it serviced and MOT’d for a full year prior to collection. They also provide an excellent after-sales service too, and are only happy to oblige any concerns. The whole process was a happy experience and all their cars are offered at very, very reasonable prices. They ARE NOT cars purchased at auction either. My car came direct from a Volvo main dealership.
I SHALL LOOK HERE FIRST when buying my next car. Best regards, Heather Prendergast.

Great after sales support!

great after sales support!

I think that mark a of really good car dealership is how they treat you when something goes wrong. I bought a 2012 Ford Focus from Gravel Hill recently and it had a couple of faults. The staff here never dismissed my concerns, they took a look at the car and fixed everything in a timely manner.
Well worth a visit if you are looking for a 2nd hand car.
