Good itinerary very good tour manager visits well planned with comfortable coach travel
We were left very disappointed with our few days in Yorkshire. 'Glorious Yorkshire' 5 nights May 2026. We can not fault Great Rail on their excellent communication, or the lovely excursions which we enjoyed. It was all very well organised. Our tour guide was wonderful. However, the hotel that Great Rail selected left a lot to be desired. It was detailed as a 4 Star. The room we had actually had no storage space other than a small wardrobe to hang a few items in. We kept the rest of our belongings in our suitcases on the floor which was not ideal. At least it was clean and the beds were comfortable. Breakfasts in the hotel were extremely poor. Food actually seemed quite scarce! We had to help ourselves to tea or coffee from a machine. It's a small point, but at other hotels, we have been served beverages at the table in the mornings. Sadly, the first evening meal which was included in the cost of the holiday was perhaps the most dreadful meal we have ever had. The chicken, potatoes and broccoli tasted of nothing but salt and, even though we and our fellow guests hardly ate any of it, we suffered afterwards with a burning feeling in our throats. The three course meal took two hours to serve to the group, finishing around 9.30 p.m. We know that our lovely tour guide passed on all the complaints to the hotel kitchen, but we had already decided that we couldn't risk eating another meal there. We learned from our fellow travellers that the meals did not improve during the rest of the week. It was our decision, but added extra to the cost of the break. We realised that it's a risk you have to take if you book with Great Rail and discover that the hotel and meals you have paid for in advance are not what you would have expected. On a good note, the staff at the hotel (the Elmbank Hilton in York) were friendly and helpful. Sadly, the rail travel both outward and inward also went badly. Again, no reflection on Great Rail, but when we booked First Class Travel we hadn't reckoned that we would end up having to stand or sit on the floor in the First Class carriages because of various delays, cancellations, over-crowding, etc. I am over 70 and really needed to be able to sit down for all the travel. So this is something to bear in mind when you book. In summary, our holiday with Great Rail would have been greatly improved by a better choice of hotel. Making the evening dinners an optional choice would have been another solution.
An amazingly varied programme of trips. They were all fabulous and we had plenty of time for each destination.
A well organised holiday,a lovely hotel ,a friendly helpful tour guide, and good company in our group. The places we visited were well chosen and the time free and time together was well balanced. A really enjoyable experience.
It was OK some days and very enjoyable on other days

An excellent holiday. The tour manager kept me well informed on each days itinerary and had an in depth knowledge of every excursion. The vegetarian option at dinner was limited, but that was the hotel at fault for lacking in imagination. The delicious desserts made up for it. I particularly enjoyed the journey on the North Yorks Moors Railway. The guide at Castle Howard was riveting with so many tales to tell. I look forward to choosing my next holiday.

A good trip but the hotel was disappointing and with no lift not good for those with poor mobility - for us possible but tiring. For a great Rail journey there was too much coach travel !
