Pleasant holiday with Great Rail, to a pleasant part of Germany. Well organised and great tour manager. My only comment would be the day in Quedlinburg was a bit of a missed opportunity and disappointing. We left late in morning for a short ride on the steam train and then bussed back for some limited free time and then a guided tour round the town. Both experiences great, but day was in part wasted due to late start and limited free time. Arriving earlier would have given different options, like more free time and or the option to complete the whole harz railway route. Hotel pleasant, great dinners, breakfast options limited. Glad I went and despite thoughts and delay to return journey I’d recommend once again GRJ

Trip should have been 7 days, not 6, even though that'd would have pushed price up a bit. The itinerary itself was good as were the excellent hotels but the journey back was horrendous, firstly because of the extremely early start on last day (5.30 am) compounded by horrendously delayed trains connections (not Great Rail Journeys fault of course) but when several of us (at least 6) who were reallocated seats on a later train, only to find they were already occupied, our Tour Manager just sat in his seat, it was the Eurostar lady who kindly took care to find us empty seats in another carriage. The return journey should have been broken overnight at eg Cologne (Koln) as it was on the way out. The day trips were great, but the day to Quedlinburg (beautiful town, excellent local guide) ended far too soon, we'd no free time, (just a short time on arrival for lunch) then straight back to Wernigerode when there was no rush whatsoever, we could have had a couple hours after the Guide's tour to explore the quaint shops etc and still have loads time to be back for dinner at 7.30pm. To sum up, a very enjoyable trip, just return journey horrendous, that's why most of us said it should have been done over 2 days making the trip 7 days instead of 6. And more free time in Quedlingburg. Finally, have to say the Tour Manager was a bit disappointing imo to be honest, yes he did 'what it said on the tin' by organising each day, but that was it. I know Tour Managers are not Guides, but heavens above they normally (in my experience both with GRJ previously and several other escorted hols) give a little bit of local info and so on. Nice guy - yes, but, well, I've said what I've said (that's my opinion) hate to be critical...

Very good hotels, interesting steam railways and towns. Outward journey faultless, but return was subject to long delay at Cologne which badly impacted onward travel.

I went for the snow and discovered fascinating history and politics. Great group, fantastic tour leader (always helpful and on top of things) and really interesting trips. Let down by Deutsches Bahn but all worked out in the end. Hotel in Wernigerode in terrific position.

A holiday on a rail track less travelled! The steam trains were much more efficient than DB and were also as picturesque as they were nostalgic. The trip to the top of The Brocken was chilling in more ways than one. The towns we visited were rich in history and beautiful with their half timbered houses, We had two good guides. Apart from the patisserie, I don’t go to Germany for the food but the hotel’s was fine. The company was excellent and good fun, and our tour guide John did a great job. I can recommend this holiday as a winter break and it was also most enlightening.

Julie, our tour manager, ran everything very smoothly, this was my first GRJ trip and talking to some of the others on the tour unusual in that it was a very small group so not typical. Julie did a great job of getting us from place to place on time and recomending local restaurants.

Despite various disruptions due to weather, etc the holiday achieved its intentions and felt very smooth. Bev did an excellent job dealing with the challenges. The hotel was comfortable and the food very good.

An excellent itinerary and a very enjoyable experience. Just local German hiccups which our tour manager ably worked around.

We had a wonderful time. The snowy scenery was beautiful and the towns we visited were interesting and historic. The steam train trips were fun too. Both hotels we stayed at were excellent and our guide Bev was friendly and helpful.

Our base town and hotel was good and the Unesco Heritage site of Goslar was excellent. Some issues with German trains but the Eurostar Plus and First Class Trains were very comfortable.

Excellent holiday combining trips on the HSB steam railway with guided visits to Goslar and Quedlinburg. The weather caused a few problems with the schedule but these were ably resolved by our tour manager and the folks back in the GRJ office.

Thoroughly enjoyable and interesting. We were in very safe hands with Charles, our Tour Leader. The hotel was excellent; warm, comfortable and extremely clean. These tours are quite intense and sociable and I would only recommend if you are happy with that, as we are.

Ok. The trains were great, rest of the holiday, so so. Would not travel with this company again.
