We enjoyed our meal in the restaurant…
We enjoyed our meal in the restaurant and the wine was particularly good ( a Chilean Merlot ) . However, we found the restaurant staff frosty , if not , quite rude. Shame really … it spoiled our evening

Went for afternoon tea today and it was honestly incredible. The waiting staff were so on top of everything, even when my prossecco got low I didn't have a chance to reach for our bottle myself. Amazing, thank you so much for making friends birthday so special
Service was great food even better! Highly recommend.
Booked here for joint birthday meal for special one. The guys were accomodating at booking stage and made a special evening more special by bringing out a nice surprise after dinner.
OK its a bit more expensive than most places but i think the food and experience makes it worth it. You won't eat here every night but the Beef Wellington will make you want to. Wine choice is excllent and staff really couldn't do any more. They were polite and on the ball and made the night spot on.
Highly recommend Greyfriars Colchester
I went to Greyfriars with my date, mostly for a drink on the patio, there were perhaps 10 other customers there, sun was shining and the venue is impressive, sadly we decided to see if they had a table for two, firstly one of the bar men spent an uncomfortable amount of time staring at my date, while I was talking to him, bit creepy in fact. He said they had a table free and warned us that there was only one other table occupied so it would be quiet, fair warning!
The menu was rather uninspiring so I plumped for the garden salad followed by cod and fries, bad move, the salad was boring and I think they forgot the dressing, while the cod was ok, soggy batter and overly dry fries made it a disappointment, the food was of the quality of an average chain gastro pub rather than this amazing place that competes with London on quality that I'd heard so much about, perhaps I got a dud night but it was disappointing.
Very disappointing for a works Christmas do. We were a booking of 13 ladies. There were crackers on the table and Christmas gifts to exchange and we were made to feel like we were at school and told in a patronising manner to be quiet and keep the noise down as if we were eating in a library. We complained and said how offended we were considering we were not being overly loud or rude, just happy and in the Christmas spirit. We were offered a free round of drinks as an apology but by this point it had already ruined the parties ambience. Food was amazing but only recommend if you want to feel like you’re back at school and eating in the library with the head teacher watching in dismay!!

On the upside I got a second date!
In summary if you want to pay through the nose for average food and average service go to Greyfriars.
