over £50 compulsary hidden extras

We booked a car through Car Trawlers. We had prepaid but on pickup, Hertz added over £50 for winter tyres and this was absolutely compulsary. They would not release the car without the payment. They said that it was compulsary by Danish law but if so, then it should be added at the time of booking. They claimed that it was car trawlers' fault but the Hertz site itself is also very quiet about this requirement. Be warned, the price you agree in advance is not the true price in winter and it's a lot extra. Up to 40% of the booking fee and maybe more. Somebody needs to sue them. Then they'll include it in advance.

In answer to the Hertz response:
Thanks for the response but you need to look at your own website: winter tyres are shown as an optional extra and even if you click for more information, it says:
'Snow Tyres
In Denmark it is not mandatory to have snow tyres on your car, but from the 1st of December to the 31st of March, you can add snow tyres to your car with 24 hours advance notice, for all vehicle groups.'

Dear Pnomis,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are sorry to hear that the winter tyre charge came as an unwelcome surprise at pick-up.

In Denmark, winter tyres are required when weather conditions make it necessary. As a rental company, we must ensure that all vehicles are safe, roadworthy and compliant with the current regulations under such conditions. For operational and safety reasons, once winter conditions apply, our fleet is equipped with winter tyres for all relevant rentals during that period.

As your reservation was made through a third-party provider, CarTrawler, we unfortunately cannot guarantee that all locally applicable or weather-dependent charges are displayed during their booking process. While we work closely with our partners, Hertz cannot be held responsible for missing or incomplete information on external websites.

We understand that being asked to pay an additional charge at pick-up can be frustrating. However, when winter tyres are required due to prevailing conditions, the charge is mandatory and must be applied before the vehicle can be released. The winter tyre fee reflects the significant operational costs associated with fitting and maintaining winter tyres across an entire fleet.

We appreciate your feedback and will use it to continue improving transparency and communication around locally applicable requirements.

Kind regards,
Isabell - Hertz Denmark

Non disclosed charges

Not thrilled to have been charged 10€ a day for winter tyres that they advised is a REQUIREMENT during winter in Denmark. Why is Hertz billing customers for winter tyres that are of Hertz responsibility? It is your job to ensure the cars you rent are road worthy.

This was not disclosed during my booking - granted I did book outside of Hertz, however that is no excuse, Hertz should ensure that all their bookings, including booking from partner websites receive the information BEFORE they arrive at the rental office and then are out of options but to pay.

When trying to book through Hertz website I am still unable to find information on these charges.
The information available is regarding Snow tyres and mentions they are not mandatory but you can have them from the 1st of December.

I would not recommend.

Edit after reply from Hertz:

Go check your own website. When making a booking through Hertz website, the only information I can find there says they are not MANDATORY but CAN be requested IN ADVANCE from Dec1 (my booking was in November). I have screenshots from YOUR website.

Direct quote from HERTZ WEBSITE:
“ In Denmark it is not mandatory to have snow tyres on your car, but from the 1st of December to the 31st of March, you can add snow tyres to your car with 24 hours advance notice, for all vehicle groups.”

My point still stands, you can always ensure your customer receives an email with the information needed within time to cancel their booking if they don’t agree with the terms.

If you have to swap all tyres anyway because it is mandatory by law, then your customers shouldn’t have to pay for that service or it should be directly included in ALL bookings within Denmark.

Why is something that is a requirement being made to be an EXTRA payment at collection?

Hi Kate,

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are sorry to hear about the confusion regarding the winter tyre charge.

According to current Danish legislation, all vehicles must be equipped with approved winter tyres when weather conditions require it. This includes a tyre fee when renting with us, which is applied in accordance with the regulations and the rental terms applicable to all bookings in Denmark.

In your case, the reservation was made through a third-party provider. Unfortunately, when bookings are made outside Hertz’ own channels, we cannot guarantee that all information - including mandatory fees such as the winter tyre charge - is presented accurately or in full during the booking process. While we work closely with our partners to ensure proper communication, Hertz cannot be held responsible for missing or incomplete information on external platforms.

We fully understand that being met with an unexpected fee at pick-up can be frustrating, and we take your concerns seriously. Information about winter tyres and the legal requirements is available through Hertz’ own channels, and we continue to work on improving visibility and clarity - both internally and with our partners.

Your feedback is valuable and helps us enhance the customer experience and communication regarding mandatory requirements.

Response to edit:

Our winter tyre policy has been updated due to the new legislation in Denmark. The fee you were charged ensures that you are driving safely, and in compliance with the law. It also protects you from potential police fines of DKK 1,000 per tyre for using unsuitable tyres in winter conditions.

This is why we apply the winter tyre fee during the winter season — to keep you safe and legally covered.

Kind regards,
Isabell - Hertz Denmark

Data Scam - AVOID

Data Scam.
Returned our rental, had it inspected, got the final invoice confirming no damage / charges etc. Then a month later get an email saying it has been in a crash and I'll be charged £thousands.

Still going through it all, but is worrying that they have my card details.

Hi Lee,

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We understand your concern, and we want to assure you that all damage claims are carefully reviewed by our dedicated Damage Team.

As part of the rental agreement, which was signed at the time of pickup, customers agree that we may charge for damages, fines, or additional fees related to the rental for up to six months after the contract has ended. This ensures that any incidents reported to us after the return can still be properly investigated and allocated to the correct rental.

If you are still going through the process, we kindly encourage you to contact our Damage Team directly at damage@hertz.nu, who will be able to provide you with all the relevant documentation and assist you further.

I hope this helps clarify the situation!

Best regards,
Isabell - Hertz Denmark.

Company didn't explain about the clock on the front of windshield!!!

Why didn't they explain or at least have a paper explaining what the clock on the left side of the passenger front window was for? We parked at a grocery store, walked in for less than 15 minutes. We came out to a ticket on the window. We asked the hotel and they explained that you need to put the hands on the clock indicating the time you parked and left your car----even for 10 minutes. So, a month ago we got a $178 charge from Hertz for the ticket. Knowing that we were American, surly they would explain a few simple important details before we left with the car!

Hi Mike,

Thank you for sharing your experience. While we understand your frustration, it is ultimately each traveler's responsibility to familiarize themselves with local driving and parking regulations when visiting another country.

Many European countries use parking discs in designated areas, and signage indicating their use is usually present. We recommend checking local driving laws before traveling or asking rental agencies about any important regulations when picking up a vehicle.

I hope this helps clarify the situation, and I’m sorry to hear about the unexpected fine. Safe travels in the future!

Best regards,
Isabell - Hertz Denmark.

Hertz Denmark is a Scam

In July, I rented a car via an airline website from Hertz Denmark (which is a franchise by Via Biler Udlejning A/S), which I pick up upon arrival in Copenhagen Airport. The check-out went smooth, and the front desk took a print of my credit card for possible extra’s, as they called it. During my stay, I unknowingly passed one of the automatic speed controls on the highways around Copenhagen. Upon the end of my stay and returned the car and retrieved by deposit. One month later, I received an email from Hertz Denmark, which said that I had an unpaid police speeding ticket for speeding. They informed me that they had already drawn the amount for the speeding ticket + an administration from my credit card, and they has blanked out the information for myself to check and pay the speeding ticket. The email also contained a link to a picture, which clearly showed myself driving the car, so I didn’t dispute the speeding ticket or that Hertz Denmark had drawn the money from my credit card. Now, two months later, I receive another email from Hertz Denmark that I had an unpaid police speeding ticket and that they had drawn the money from my credit card. I check the timestamp, picture and amount, which was all the same as in the firsts email. I immediately called and email Hertz Denmark. It is impossible to get in contact with the franchise company Via Biler Udlejning A/S, and when I finally managed to get a woman from switchboard on the line, she said that she couldn’t connect me, and that I would have to wait until someone responded to my email. After a couple of days, I decided to make a reclamation to my credit card bank, with the request that they blacklisted Hertz Denmark and Via Biler Udlejning A/S. After three weeks, I finally got my money return from the credit card company, but no apology or other message from Hertz Denmark. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend Hertz Denmark or its franchise company Via Biler Udlejning A/S, which is conducting daylight robbery by taking peoples money straight from their credit cards, not answering emails or phone call and not having a resolution process.

Hello Andy,

Thank you for sharing your feedback.

We sincerely regret the experience you had with Hertz Denmark. We understand how frustrating it must have been to deal with unclear communication, duplicated charges, and a lack of support during your attempts to resolve this issue.

We are currently experiencing a high volume of inquiries in our Fines department, which may have contributed to the delays in addressing your concerns. Please rest assured that your feedback has been noted and will be forwarded to the relevant team to ensure such situations are addressed and prevented in the future.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Best regards,
Isabell - Hertz Denmark.

Worst service ever.

Worst service ever.
No information shared with me about an additional charge of +800euro for a rental that was originally 150 euro. They only took the money from the bank account without any information. The cost was due to a small small scratch that was probably already there before.
After the money was taken from the bank almost 2 months passed by before i got any reply about this cost when sending several mails and contact forms. Horrible.

Dear Oskar,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are truly sorry to hear about your dissatisfaction with our service.

Please allow us to clarify the situation. Upon returning your rental, our team identified a small scratch on the vehicle, which unfortunately required repair. As outlined in our rental agreement, any damage beyond normal wear and tear is subject to an additional charge. We do regret that this information may not have been communicated as clearly or promptly as you expected.

Unfortunately, the pictures you have provided us with was taken after you've left the Hertz parking lot. As stated on the contract, and on two flyers in the car, documentation needs to be made before driving away. Furthermore, the contract states that "By providing card details and enrolling in our automatic card payment service, you authorize Hertz Denmark to charge your credit card for additional payments related to the specific rental up to 6 months after the last day of the rental agreement."

If you would like to discuss this matter further, please do not hesitate to reach out directly at damage@hertz.nu.

Best regards,
Isabell - Hertz Denmark

Check you car with a fine toothcomb before driving off.

We hired a small car from Hertz at Copenhagen airport. They have the collection point in a dark underground car park where it is virtually impossible to check the car for damage due to the darkness. The car had not been washed which made it even harder. We did our best to check it with our phone lights. The car was great and we believed that we had returned it in perfect condition. The return area is a large open plan car park opposite the rental office, nobody was available in the kiosk to sign out the car with us. Within a couple of hours, we received an email from Hertz charging us 5300 DK (600 GBP) for a so called dent in the driver side car door which is impossible to see in the three photos they sent us. I had washed the car on the day of the return and no dent was visible at the time. This is a very disappointing experience with a car hire company which we had used many times before and we will look elsewhere in the future.

Hi Marc
We are sad to hear about your thoughts on your experience with Hertz at CPH Airport. We are very proud of the service we normally offer all of our customers in Denmark, and we would like to hear more about this case. As a normal all of our cars are parked in the fully lighted parking area in CPH Airport along with all other rentals cars. There is no underground parking lot at this location.

Regarding the cleanliness of the car our records show that the specific car was duly cleaned both inside and outside before this particular rental. The state of our cars is a top priority before handing them out to our customers so we are interested in hearing more about this experience.

We would very much like to hear more details from you and as we can see a case if open between you and our damage department, we will get back to you in that specific correspondence.
