I’m glad I went ahead and replaced the buffer in my mid 80s surplus stock. The buffer that was in the stock, which was most like the original, had turned the color of black coffee and when I tried removing it, it came out in small chunks. After putting the new buffer in a pot of boiling water for a few minutes, the buffer popped right in, with just a little bit of resistance.

H&K Heckler and Koch A3 Buffer - Stock - Retractable Stock Buffer for HK MP5
These common wear items need to be replaced when they become yellow, brittle, and worn. Inspect your buffer for the following: discoloration, the buffer becomes hard and brittle, tears, cracks, or breakages of any part of the buffer.
Replacement of the H buffer on your A3 stock:
Use a set of needle nose pliers or flat head screwdriver to remove all the existing "H" buffer. In most cases, you have to remove the old buffer a piece at a time.
Place the buffer in boiling water for several minutes or until the buffer becomes pliable.
Press the new buffer in the opening in the back of the A3 stock until the buffer sits flush with the backplate. You may need to use a dowel to help push the buffer into place.
