customer service lacking

I like to support a small business so I thought I’d give jacks lab a try.

They get two star because yes I eventually received what I paid for but goodness I did pay dearly for it, but that’s normally just what happens with small businesses, I get it

So. Eventually got my photos back, only half of what I expected to receive based on what I sent them.
I emailed back asking where the rest were, I got another wordless email with a couple more photos, not all of them.
So I sent anooother email saying there are some missing still, got a reply saying no sorry that’s all the photos on your film. I replied saying no that’s right, there should have been at least 10 or so more and is there a reason they haven’t been developed? Dodgy film or corrupted somehow? I’m no expert so I was genuinely curious.
I then got a reply, finally, with all of the developed photos. No context or explanation or apology for the drawn out process.
So I asked, why have they now been found and sent?
A short short reply saying,
“Apologies I didn’t read your order properly, cheers.”

Yikes

So yes I got the images, eventually. customer service skills really lacking for a small business.

Used this lab for past few years

Used this lab for past few years, 5 stars - all good, both dev and comms. Recently the website is down and it looks like it has stopped developing but has not communicated this on the site or to customers, this could have been handled better (ie existing paid orders).
Note this is clearly due to trying to live/work in the uk and closing small businesses (stats are available online) is now part of the plan unfortunately. Good luck.

Terrible. Is it a scam?

They took our films and £44 at their shop on 5th December 2025, with a delivery estimate of a week or two at most. We have heard nothing since. The website has gone and the shop appears to be permanently closed. Emails are not answered.

THE best!! I’ve always seen a huge difference in quality when developing with Jacks’s Lab in comparison to any other.
They truly care about your film, develop and scan it with love and precision. I’ve not been anywhere else for years! You guys are smashing. Thank you so much 💗

Great service

They’re quick, with high quality scans and a very friendly service. I always use them for scans and am always pleased. They’re slightly expensive but it’s absolutely worth it

Legends

When it comes to developing our film, there’s only one place we trust — Jack’s Lab. The quality’s always bang on, but it’s their care and passion that keep us coming back. They treat every roll like it’s their own, and it shows in every scan.

We can’t pop in without getting lost in a half-hour chat about something random — oat milk, films, Sean Paul, dogs, or occasionally, actual photography. They’re just genuinely good humans who love what they do. And because everything’s processed in-house, you always know exactly who’s handling your film.

A proper dream team — the only lab we’d ever trust with our rolls.

My film has finally arrived

My film has finally arrived, fortunately it was only a test film to check if a Rollei Sl66 was working properly.
I sent the order to Jacks Lab on the 11th of August, the order arrived with them on the 14th of August, at which point I was told it would be completed on the 29th of August, just within their 7-14 day turn around time, which was fine. The 29th came and went and I heard nothing from them. I emailed them on the 2nd of September and was told they had a problem with their mail service and apologised for the delay. Again no more information for nearly a week. I emailed them again on the 8th and once again they apologised and said the film had now been picked up by Royal Mail that day and was tracked, no tracking number was given.

Finally on the 13th of September I received an email from Royal Mail saying they now had my parcel from Jacks Lab, and that it would be delivered on the 15th of September. Just over a month after it was received at Jacks Lab. (Royal Mail tracked is usually 24 or 48 hours, not 5 working days.)

I understand that the process takes time, what I don’t understand is the lack of communication, they only responded when I emailed them, it would have been nice for them to get in touch as soon as they knew they had a problem with the post. Sadly I will not be using them again.

Great people and brill service

I’ve always had such a great experience with Jack’s Lab. They are really knowledgeable and super helpful especially to film noobs like me.
The online process is really simple to receive the digital copies and the fact that their service takes a bit longer now than the first time I used their services just goes to show how busy (and popular) they are and it’s all thanks to their fabulous customer service. Highly recommend them to anyone who wants to develop some film or get their camera repaired by Nathan at No Clear Meaning.

Unprofessional and Disrespectful Experience

I reached out to this company to explore the possibility of a partnership with my brand. Instead of a constructive conversation, I was met with arrogance and a dismissive attitude from the owner. Rather than offering insight or feedback, he outright belittled my concept and made it clear he didn’t believe in the idea at all.

There was no effort to be professional or even respectful—just negativity and condescension. As someone running a successful e-commerce business, I’ve dealt with many companies, and this was by far one of the most disappointing interactions I’ve had.

I would strongly advise anyone considering working with this company to think twice. If this is how they treat potential partners, I’d hate to see how they handle paying customers.

Reply from Jack's Lab

Hi Charlie.

Thank you so much for your valuable feedback.

As I explained to you over our Instagram exchange; we are a small independent film lab, we're interested in servicing our genuine customers, not individuals or companies who are looking for cheap deals and to exploit the film industry.

You claimed to be interested in a partnership; I asked for more details about your brand. You said there was no brand yet. I asked for any details you could give me about your potential brand, any details, names, ideas, products, services, costs, anything that could give me a reason to continue the conversation with you, given that you were messaging from a private account with 0 post and next to no followers - We've had our fair share of scammers. I also don't like my time being wasted.

You weren't able to provide any of this information, yet still asked me to quote you on film development, digital scanning and printing of 35mm film on an inordinate scale - with absolutely no data, details or even vague information to back it up. I provided you with a quote nonetheless on this basis.

You then proceeded to tell me that my quote was "crazy and unjustifiable" and that you'd receive a comparative quote from another similar service of around a quarter of the cost. You continued to insult my businesses legitimacy, our justification for our prices and structure, our viability as a business, oh and then you decided to insult me personally as just "some photographer from Bristol" (of which, yes, I am just a photographer from Bristol) running some shoddy business from my mums garage (she's not alive anymore...so, good one). All whilst I was lucky enough to have been approached by your good self; a "successful e-commerce business entrepreneur pulling six-figure months'. Lucky me.

So yes, I questioned your own business model's viability, and I questioned your ethical and moral standpoint of squeezing services from small independent businesses for next to nothing, whilst it's damn hard work to make a buck in this industry at the best of times.

If you want bang average (at best) development, with absolutely no care, attention, expertise or dare I say it, love - then I would encourage you to take your business to a larger, commercial lab who's margin is happy to be squeezed.

If you want a good, local, boutique, honest, caring lab, then we are they. But we will not do things so cheaply that we can't pay our extremely hard-working staff a standard living wage.

All the best with your new reusable camera business. Warm hugs.
