Ticket office staff lie/unhelpful customer service

We bought return tickets to Vulcano from the ticket office in Milazzo. We didn't know which boat we would take to come back the following day, but the sales person assured us we could change them in Vulcano. In Vulcano, we found that we couldn't change the boat to return and we were forced to pay again. Customer service just quoted their rules which require any changes to be completed 24hrs before taking the journey and refused to reimburse us. Either deliberate scam or incompetent staff with unresponsive customer service. Don't book return tickets unless you know in advance which boat you'll take.

Dear Customer,
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We would like to remind you that purchasing a ticket implies acceptance of the General Conditions of Carriage. As required by the regulations, the ticket is valid only for the date, time, and route purchased. Our operators operate in full compliance with current regulations. If it were necessary to change the departure time, the request could have been made within the timeframe and using the procedures indicated on our official website.
Best regards.

To buy a ticket I need an account. To register for an account I need to receive SMS verification code. But I do not get these on my UK number even though I am asked to select country code. Tried several times using different numbers but no response. Why doesn’t Liberty Lines permit purchase with Guest account to avoid all this hassle?

Terrible experience

Terrible experience. We travelled by ferry from Milazzo to Stromboli. We were stranded on Stromboli for 3 days due to adverse weather for sailing. We had no warning beforehand that this could happen, otherwise we wouldn't have gone. On Stromboli the Liberty Lines office only opens for a few short windows a day. We had to regularly walk there to try find information on the the situation. Staff were unhelpful and they just didn't care. This seriously disrupted our holiday, flights, budget etc.

Do NOT go without checking the wind forecasts and weather conditions for the hydrofoil boats.

Luckily on day 3 a big cargo ship saved the day and got us, and the other tourists, off the island (Siremar).

Unusable website

The ferry ride is fine and they were kind to let us board first as my wife is pregnant. Trying to book tickets on the website however is pretty near impossible. Unless you click the exact right buttons in the exact right order the website will likely error out in some way and trying to start over likely won't work. Finding departure times on the website works fine.

Payment done with Paypal

Payment done with Paypal, money deducted but missing ticket.
Customer service tells me that sometimes Paypal makes a mistake, it takes money but fails in reaching the website /company for booking the reservation… what kind of reason is it? And do you allow a system like this in your website??? And they claim that happens sometimes “only” during high season but it’s 1st of June and it’s not high season yet.. I claim that it’s better they don’t offer Paypal payments option if it’s not working… they say “yes it’s working but sometimes not..” unbelievable…and now I have to wait for money refund form Paypal… then for me it means Paypal is not working on their website because it’s the first time in my life experiencing something like this with Paypal, it make no sense what they are saying…and now I have to wait refund before making another booking risking to miss the spot… please don’t offer Paypal if you are not able to make it work properly…

trips cancelled for unclear reasons. no customer service

We booked a crossing from Milazzo to Vulcano on 14 april 2025. When arriving in Milazzo it was notd that th 8:30 crossing had been cancelled. No reasons were given. The weather was very normal, no strong winds. It was completely unclear to us and other passengers what we should do. W were told to wait for th next crossing but this one was cancelled as well. This apparently continued the entire day. We soon got tired of this game and left Milazzo. When I sent a mail to Liberty Lines asking for a refund it was flatly declined and I was referred to the company thru which I had booked the tickets. Luckily this company (Ferryhopper) got in touch with Liberty Lines and was able to obtain a least a refund for the outbound trip to Vulcano. In my opinion Liberty Lines is a mess with not existent customer service and unprofesional staff. I strongly do NOT recommend them.

Not going again...

Outward and return journey to Ustica in one day. What can I say...while the outward journey was very pleasant and punctual, the return journey was a nightmare come to life. It got very stormy during the course of the day, so that by the time the ferry left Ustica at 5 p.m. there were already high waves. The hydrofoils were used until about halfway, but even as an inexperienced passenger you could tell that there were major problems with the boat's inclination and steering ability. By the halfway point, nothing was happening... the boat was turning in circles, loud signals were sounding from the engine room and the crew made no attempt to communicate with the obviously very worried passengers. A planned 1.5 hour trip turned into an odyssey lasting over three hours, during which the crew repeatedly tried to use the hydrofoils (which didn't work), the ship spun in the waves and passengers felt completely unsafe, particularly because of the ship's extreme sideways tilt in the waves. Unfortunately, I cannot accept excuses such as the fact that none of the crew speaks a word of English on an island ferry that is predominantly designed for tourism. But at least nobody gets upset about this assessment here, as nobody understands it anyway. ;)
To everyone else: if the sea is a bit rough and you still want to go to Ustica - take the bigger ferry!!!!

Too fast in the Milazzo port

Shame on you! Your captains come into the port at milazzo at such speed. Have consideration for the people paying lots of money in the marina to try to be safe from the weather only to be rolled around because of waves and surge from the ferries coming in!! Poor seamanship.
