My husband was diagnosed with prostate…

My husband was diagnosed with prostate Cancer. The Macmillan nurse never did anything the doctor said for her to do and only spoke to him once. Both my parents died of cancer. They never did anything or did any visits. We had to do everything. I would never donate. I give to Cancel research instead.

Macmillan genuinely saved my life after…

Macmillan genuinely saved my life after my cancer diagnosis. I have had support from their helpline and counselling funded by them. They have always made time to talk to me and listen to my concerns. I was diagnosed with a very rare cancer during Covid, and the oncology department provided very limited information on my condition and I had to make life changing decisions with very little info. Macmillan were there and not only were able to provide me with the information I needed, but empowered me to make the best decision for me at the time. They were the only professionals during all the surgeries, procedures, chemo and isolation that consistently treated me like a human being and offered me kindness and compassion. I’m forever grateful

Having lost 2 family members to Cancer…

Having lost 2 family members to Cancer and received very poor support from "MacMillan" Nurses I had a very poor opinion of the charity. Having read one of the responses to a previous review I wonder if the reason for this that the so called Macmillan nurses no longer have any direct link to the charity but continue to fly under that flag because the funding for the position originally came from the charity. This situation was never made clear and we were under the misapprehension that we were dealing with the charity. If was not the case perhaps I have judged them unfairly.

Wish I could give zero stars UNBELIEVABLE!!!

I cannot believe Macmillan state “we’re here for everyone” when they clearly are not!!!! My grandfather was diagnosed with terminal cancer in December 22 and given less than 6 months to live. We have been told numerous times that Macmillan will go and visit him. He has had 1 visit and this was only to talk about the benefits he can receive. WE DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE MONEY. What an unbelievable charity that do not care. I hope to god that I never have to rely on Macmillan at any point in my life as they are useless and do not do anything what is the point of them being here and people donating money to them!!!!

Hello, thank you for getting in touch with us. We are so sorry to learn that your grandfather has not had the support that he was promised and understand how upsetting that this must be. Our Macmillan Palliative Care Nurses are usually put in place following an assessment by your GP or a request from your grandfather’s cancer team. Do you know if this has been done? I have included the link for the needs assessment if this hasn’t been started so you can reach out to them immediately. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/social-care-and-support-guide/help-from-social-services-and-charities/getting-a-needs-assessment/
Jade if this has been completed would you be able to reach out to his doctors to chase what is happening or call one our cancer specialist nurses on 0808 808 0000 and they will look at supporting you on how to chase this up.
Our National Support Line is available 8am to 8pm 7 days a week on the same number. Here you can speak with teams of Information and Support Advisers, Cancer Information Nurse Specialists and a Money and Work Service. Jade they may also be able to look at what other support may be available in your area so it would be worth giving them a call whilst you chase for palliative care.

If you would like to look at raising a complaint Jade can you email us at feedback@macmillan.org.uk so we can support you with this. Thank you for reaching out to us and we hope this helps

Thank you for reaching out to us. Macmillan Nurses that offer palliative care at home hold our name as we will have supplied the initial funding for the positions. Sometime this can be for 2 years or more, it depends on the arrangement with the hospital trust, who we work very closely with. Very often this funding will then be taken over by the NHS, but again we will continue to work closely with them.

The allocation of these nurses are managed either by a medical assessment from your GP or a decision from your cancer team.

There is so much more that we do than just talk on the phone. Have you called our National Support Line? They can be reached on 0808 808 0000 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm. Here you will find teams of Information and Support Advisers, Cancer Information Nurse Specialists and a Money and Work Service all on hand to help.

Our Finance Team work Monday to Friday 9am to 8pm and on the weekend 9am to 5pm . They can review your finances with you and see if there are benefits you can claim and help you with these. They can also look to see if you are eligible for a Macmillan grant (macmillan.org.uk/cancer-inf…).

Our work team can support you with conversations you can have with your employers so that you have all the information that you need for this. We have nurses available to answer questions you may not have thought of in your GP or hospital's appointments and our support advisers are there to listen and can look to see what else may be available to you locally.

We currently are offering for those with cancer who are eligible 6 free sessions of Bupa counselling. We also have the Online Community (community@macmillan.org.uk) where you can chat to others who might feel a similar way you do and have some words of comfort and advice.

If you have called the National Support Line, our support is over the phone or via web chat but we can also support you by looking to see what is available to you locally if you prefer a different type of contact.

We have local Macmillan Centers that are separate to the National Support Line, where you can obtain face to face support.

I hope this helps explain a bit about how Macmillan looks to support people with cancer, but if you have any further queries please do get in touch.

Incompetent is putting it mildly!

Absolutely let down by this so called charity! My mum was let down and given false promises when she got diagnosed with her terminal illness. Don’t even get me started on her waste of time Macmillan nurse! They’re an absolute joke! Stop donating to these fools!

Hello C.A2, I am so very sorry to hear of the difficulties that you are having supporting your dad with a wheelchair. Nope

Nope.
Saw so much about MacMillan over the years. Been to various coffee mornings and donated here and there. Thought they were leaders in care for cancer patients until my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer with brain metasis. He was given a card for someone named Joanne, he called her once to ask some questions and was palmed off and told to ring his doctor. He rang to ask for benefit advice as he was worried about money after having to leave work and again got palmed off, no calls back.
In the end was poorly and placed on an unequipped ward we contacted them and heard nothing back.
One came and promised he’d be moved to a hospice straight away. A week passed, then another. His mental health deteriorated massively and after we actually rang the hospice ourselves did he finally get moved there to die three days later.
Three days pass and macmillan phone ‘to pass along condolences’ what an absolute disgrace they are! What do they actually do? I will never ever donate or participate in anything to do with them ever again

A shameful experience

Well what can I say terrible. Made promises which were empty, communication totaly not helpful, lack of any care or real interest was the only thing the nurse Jane that was assigned to my mum was successful in. Her collegues based at James Cook rang me a week after my mum passed to ask how she was. She even sent a card that saying sorry for my death couldn't even get my mum's name right. What made it worse in the few weeks since my dearest mum died I have spoken too, two other people in a small area of rural North Yorkshire had similar experience's. If this is the norm for MacMillian when it comes to a loved one during end of life I suggest they remove themselves from this care.
Would never recommend them or support them ever again.

MacMillan. Appalling and upsetting.

MacMillan. Well, what can I say. My experience of them is entirely negative. They make an awful situation worse. So called liaison nurses who are never there and never get back. They couldn't even sort out a simple form application. The trouble is that the local hospital uses them, so, in some instances one is stuck with them. Entirely unacceptable in a life or death situation.

They didn't care

When my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer, gp introduced us to Macmillan nurse and a representative came to see her a couple of days later. He told her about art therapy classes, etc and she was keen to do that. He was supposed to return with the arrangements 2 days later - but never showed. Mum & I phoned the contact No. we were given, but calls were never returned. We never heard from them again - Mum died 5 months later.
The TV advert of "for people living with cancer" - while I doubt that, they certainly weren't there for the dying!

Stop feeding Autocentrics

Stop raising money for this charity! It goes towards autocentrics living in big houses, having fancy Carribbean holidays and driving fancy cars off the back of extreme suffering. If you want to do good go and actually chat with someone who is suffering. Spend time with them, make them a cup of tea and keep them comfortable instead of giving your money to keep autocentrics comfy!

Do Macmillan actually nurse patients anymore?

The Macmillan nurse was the first person on the scene after I was told that my Mother needed to be moved to a palliative ward a few months ago. At the time I thought that Macmillan only looked after cancer patients, but Mum didn't have cancer. To be blunt I didn't like the Nurses' attitude at all. I found her patronising, insensitive and very dismissive and impatient when I had any questions regarding my Mother's care which were answered as vaguely as she could manage. She insisted on chatting to me alone in a raspy loud whisper away from my Mother outside the door where everyone else in the corridor could hear . Her manner was a little creepy if I am honest. If felt like an act. She seemed to have been given some kind of agenda to get my Mum onto end-of-life care and nothing was going to stop her. Back in the room she held my Mother's hand and talked softly as if she was a small child not an educated woman who 4 months before had led an active life . She had become weak and frail yes, but still had a sharp mind, and it was painful to watch her being treated in this manner. What my Mum wanted didn't seem to come into it. The nurse left the room vowing to return on the Monday to have another go to get her point across. Now she has passed on several months later I think about this moment a lot and how stressful the situation became at the time. I felt there was an agenda going on and I now don't trust Macmillan . 20 years ago, when my Grandparents passed on my Mum had been full of praise for the care and kindness they showed when they both went of cancer in a short space of time. This intervention by Macmillan wasn't nursing.

Just another big fat cat faux charity…

Just another big fat cat faux charity filling its pockets out of peoples misery. They also killed off my mother with totally inappropriate use of fentanyl. She had slipped and hurt her side and was under control with normal painkillers. Though having Alzheimer's too she was easy to take advantage of. I was her next of kin and no medicines were to be changed or added without my knowledge. The care facility knew this but the macmillan nurse was a bully acting way above her station with a total disregard for protocol. Id left mum for 2 days and all was normal. I came back and she was lying flat on her back in a semi comatose state with hands raised upright shaking. She had pinprick pupils and it was quite clear good ole fentanyl, the global killer of the elderly, was doing its job. I was too late to save her. The NHS did a total cover up job as they do with many elderly people that are being culled just for being old. NEVER EVER trust anyone who is supposed to be looking after your relatives. Watch them like a hawk. Never be afraid to question them. fat cat charities are only interested in ONE THING and thats CASH and fat cat salaries. The CEO gets nearly £200k + big fat expenses- PS check their atrocious reviews elsewhere like TRUSTPILOT.
