Great service 5☆. fish and chips very mediocre, chips tasted like yesterday's warmed up
The best fish and chips we’ve ever had
The best fish and chips we’ve ever had. We booked the table earlier in the day thankfully as the restaurant was full when we arrived. We were seated straight away and our waitress was fantastic. The food didn’t take too long and was cooked to perfection. 👍

Be prepared to wait for a very very long time even when seated. Disappointed after such a long wait. The fish and chips were nothing special. It's just not worth it. Go Trenches instead as they are so much better.

We have had cod and chips from the takeaway several times and thought we could rely on it being amongst the best. Very let down today and won't be going again. Cod overcooked and dry.
Wonderful experience
Wonderful experience, stunning food , our waitress was very attentive, one of our party had dietary requirements and nothing was too much trouble
Go elsewhere if you want a pleasant meal.
I'd never been into the magpie cafe until we were staying in whitby a while back.
I had eaten fish and chips the day before so decided to have lasagne, well it arrived and I found really thick lumps of almost uncooked green pasta at the bottom of the dish. I pointed to the waitress that I was not happy paying £16 for food of this quality, she went off then came back and just said it's green pasta.
Didn't even say sorry you didn't like it.
Nothing! Why people flock to this place amazes me, you have to queue up for ages to sit in an overcrowded greasy spoon with mediocre food.
I'll be trenching elsewhere in future.
First-time back in a couple of years.
First-time back to the Magpie Cafe for a couple of years, but standards have definitely gone down somewhat in my opinion.
Arrived at 18:15 to be greated by some chap who asked us to wait outside at the top of the stairs. Trouble was, my wife is disabled and isn't able to stand for too long.
When we were finally allowed in, we were ushered upstairs via a winding twisting staircase that we both found rather difficult to climb, etc..
As for the Cod and Chips: £12.95 for what was just a 6 ounce piece of fish I thought was rather expensive. Mushy Peas were £2.00 for a small portion. A small Pepsi was £2.10; not even a proper can either! Coffee was £3.50, but not the one that my wife actually ordered as they gave her a filter one instead.
Sorry! In my opinion the Magpie Cafe is nowhere near as good as it used to be.
As for Mr.Doorman, he completely blanked us as we left. Needless to say, we didn't leave a tip!
Wouldn’t visit again.
Food was pretty good but the treatment me and my wife received off Mel, ‘the waitress’ (if you can call her a her or a waitress) was absolutely disgusting! I think I’d prefer to be hit in the face by the door than the welcoming we received off her.
Birthday meal
Ten of us went fish was like any other fish in Whitby good but chips not as good as some fish shops in Whitby, not be going back had to pay separately for peas.the John Smiths beer was not good either well can say I've been
Great attentive service, lovely cod!
Great attentive service, fabulous battered cod and beautifully cooked! Me and partner thoroughly enjoyed our visit 😊 very reasonable prices too!
Horrible soggy chips that taste rank
Horrible soggy chips that taste rank. Fish had greasy batter and tasted rather strange. Definitely not fresh fish. Our own local chippy make fish and chips better than this place. Avoid this place. Definitely rank. 🤮🤮
First time using the Magpie and last
First time using the Magpie and last. Fish was tasteless, even with plenty of salt it was poor. Gravy was tasteless as well. Chips and sausage were ok.
Fish and chips for three
Booked a table for three a week in advance, got plonked on a table barely big enough for two kids. Stuck by a wall, no views whatsoever. Tartar sauce in a bottle, better fish and chips at the Fishermans Wife up the road. Got the impression they want you in and out sharpish. Living on its name, as the experience was very poor. Will be going to Trenchers next time and won't be returning to the Magpie.
Poor food and cooking
What a disappointment after visiting the magpie. Whitebait tasteless covered in brown crumbs, looked more like small sardines than whitebait. Seafood hotpot overcooked and not cooked in the sauce which was oily, very poor. After eating here for years and travelling over 100 miles to do so we will think twice before visiting again.
Fish all great
Fish all great, Mushy peas great, chips totally underdone
Sorry, never again.
Sorry, but, we will not be going here again. Been a few times and let the bad points go due to such lovely fish. However, it is too full and hot and uncomfortable, I understand the business wanting as many customers as possible. But, we booked in advance table for two, as it was a special anniversary. You couldn't fit 2 kids on the small table we were sat at let alone eat comfortably. A very very Expensive awful experience.
Magpie all that shines is not gold
Called in today 8/7/2023 for a meal, it’s years since we were in there for a meal.
We ordered fish chips three times and scampi and chips. The fish chip meal £15.95 came with chips and fish, no tea no peas or beans, no bread, everything above fish chips was extra! It’s the first time I have had fish chips in a cafe that’s all you got, at an a expensive price as well.
The chips were undercooked a bit raw, maybe because we were one of the first in. They brought three meals out then we had to eat quite a while for the fourth meal. We needed a second drink and had to leave our meal to find someone to order it, then it took quite a while to bring it.
My opinion:
Overpriced for what you got.
Quality of the meal (chips) poor
Service poor.
I won’t be calling in again as I feel that the meal was overpriced, they doubled the price of fish and chips to put them on a plate and give you are chair to sit on, I will go to mr chips next time.
Very expensive
Very expensive, insufficient space or time allotted to add salt and vinegar to your take away, pressured to move on.
Certainly not an April fools!
At one time The Magpie Cafe was award winning, clearly not anymore ! The service was really slow, we ordered 2 fish and chips the fish was pink inside and the Burger was not quality for our money and it was cold! The second fish looked like it had just finished swimming and the chips was disgusting
Overpriced and awful
The starter was nice, however the "fish?" and chips were terrible. The cod was tiny, thin, dried up and the batter greasy and tasteless. The chips were soggy and not at all nice. Mushy peas were ok. Expensive and horrible. Our local fish and chips at home are far superior.
