Medical necessities for holiday and home.
Before travel, check you are well with no underlying medical condition. If you have chest pain or increasing pain, don’t travel. l once had to attend to a young man with history of angina in a ferry boat. As you know, there are no doctor onboard ferry. After repeated plea at 6 am, l went to his aid as l was the only one.
Anywhere you go at any length, medication includes painkiller, anti inflammatory tablets/ cream , anti nausea, anti dizziness ( prochlorperazine), antibiotic eye cream chloramphenicol, if still dry eyes, blink 30 times regularly to produce tears), hypo-forte eye drops, anti diarrhoea , constipation, antiseptic cream, insect bites, indigestion Gaviscon ( which is the best ) and sanitizer wipes. And your own medications that you have with you personally in case of flight/ luggage delay.
Depending the length and the places of our destination. On cruises, food, air con and excursions are some of the major issues . Cough is the common complaint as the air filter is not great, it’s also advisable to put room temperature as near to room temperature.Very important to have dry cough mixture as it cost £50-100 to get to see doctor and the mixture. l take Happinose barrier balm for on flight and air con rooms or nearby covid victims with face masks available at all time. If you sit next to someone that cough with the mouth open especially a chesty cough, walk way. l always get antibiotics from my doctor for longer trip over 1 week.
On excursions to mountainous regions, l bring knee, ankle , wrist and elbow braces as well as airstrips of different sizes. l also include iodine spray and chloxhexidine cream. For cracked heels, Flexitol 25% urea is an instant relief. Any foot cream with no urea is a cheap scam.
Proper seasoned trainers with gym socks as they have a grip which helps with mobility, and should you be used in rough terrains , keep a closed watch on the grounds. I see people fall with terrible injuries without being mindful.
Proper insect or uv clothes/ hat is advisable for hot weather. And sun block with uv rating.
Those on cruises , it would help to like to learn the basic skill of overcoming vertigo with inner ear exercise from physio ytube which give relief within 24 hour.
If you are elderly, a smart watch is a good way to monitor your health - oxygen saturation below 95 % is an alert, pulse and blood pressure below and above your normal pulse. l always have blood sugar and urine kit at home to use eg abnormal urine colour or smell. The best source for any query is google-put your question- “ why l feel so ill when l am eating and doing the right exercise ?” It would give you the direction to go forward , if no access to google , invest in a good doctor /GP and request for regular blood screening, free breast and stool test and for men - free PSA to exclude prostate cancer.
l am not a doctor but these are based on my personal experience as a traveller and a retired nurse with 43 years experience.
