They have a forking policy that straight up just tells you to go f*** yourself. You're forever locked into their farm with no way out, and when you've used their service. Oh, you know how terrible their uptime is, maintenance is constant, and I'm not even sure what the 'maintenance' is. It never did anything good.

The people who preach about how great this farm is are just delusional. Do yourself a favor and go to wiki.gg.

I recently moved my fanon home wiki from Fandom to Miraheze over a year ago, and we've been more traction after we closed the original Fandom wiki when our full database (40,000+ edits and over close to 600 images/pages) were transferred. After it was transferred, and we closed down the original Fandom wiki, we enabled the necessary extensions and a customizable skin, and we've officially made Miraheze our new home! Aside from the occasional downtimes and the odd 5xx errors, I love the friendly and positive community Miraheze has, and they've been very helpful on the CSS forefront. So far, we've had no problems with Miraheze and our editors there have been getting used to the new customized Refreshed skin to go along with this, something we could NEVER do with Fandom.

It's a less intuitive wiki hosting site than Fandom.
It's usable.

But I prefer Fandom.
It bugs me that people are switching.
I would actually 5-star this if the two brands made a deal that lets wiki hosts update the other site to copy the one that's being looked at

Great site! I use and edit multiple wikis. No censorship like Fandom which deleted several of my wikis. Fandom also has annoying ads which Miraheze does not.

I have been using this for a while now and I have had absolutely no problems with it. A highly customizable, fast, ad free wiki hosting platform. Really easy to learn and get used to it. Much better than other competitors. The community is also very active and supportive!

A lot of wiki are refused. Approval is managed by a guy who started a year ago. Strict rule.

They mix true with false information

I've been using Miraheze for more than a year now. I don't think the negative reviews are fair at all. Although Miraheze has definitely had its downsides and issues over time, it's absolutely the best you can get, especially considering that it's entirely free and volunteer-run. There is a bit of a learning curve, but I don't mind, and I really like using the site and creating and editing wikis on it. It's soo much better than wiki hosts like Fandom, no ads, no selling out, and great volunteer help. Many of the negative reviews here have been really poorly-written, just complaining about specific pages on Miraheze wikis. Miraheze does not create or endorse wiki content, they should complain to Miraheze Stewards about the bad content. As for that review mentioning the data loss incident, that has been over a year ago now and massive changes have been made to internal infrastructure to prevent it from happening again. Also, that incident was kind of the fault of the hosting provider, they physically disconnected a running server improperly, nobody at Miraheze had any control over that.

+ lots of control over your wiki (including extensions, skins, user groups, and the option to have a private wiki). I think this is about the most control over Mediawiki settings you can have without actually running your own instance of Mediawiki
+ good responses from volunteers. sometimes support requests get lost in the Discord if things are really busy but usually you'll get a response if you make a support thread or just ask again
+ little interference from above. they're not gonna force random changes without approval from the community.

- service can be unstable at times (server hiccups, 504s, though large outages are rare). they seem to be quite underfunded and understaffed, so I understand. it's not a big issue for my hobby project.

I personally haven't really had a problem with any toxic users or anything, I think that's something that depends more on the local community and climate rather than the wiki host (whether that be Fandom or Miraheze or any other).

Overall my experience with Miraheze has been good, and I recommend people seriously consider it as an option when they want to make a wiki.

I moved my wiki to Miraheze in June after struggling with bad wiki hosts that bloated your wiki with ads and self-hosting which was so hard and ever since then, my users have not been happier!!

Whenever I needed help, Miraheze's volunteer team was there helping me on Discord and on their community noticeboard even when I asked questions like about CSS or JavaScript or basic things like how to rename users. Their stewards also joined my local community and Discord and answered users questions or solved them for them which was a huge help because there were so many new things to learn but because they use MediaWiki it was easy to get adapted to it.

All the other farms I had tried to use were bloated with ads or ran a very old MediaWiki version which made things unusable, bots broken, and more. I was so surprised to see that Miraheze had hundreds of extensions available for me to choose and that they ran the latest MediaWiki version.

With no ads, a responsive support team, good software support and friendly people everywhere, it was really refreshing to see that services like this still exist in this day and age where every farm seeks to maximize the most money possible while giving you crumbs in terms of support and usability. They're completely non-profit and don't have any paid employees, everything is done by their highly motivated volunteers which is surprising. I've been suggesting Miraheze to everyone I know because the fact that they exist is amazing!! I appreciate what they do and leave them a good donation for their work.

This is my personal experience using Miraheze since September 2022.

My initial experience was mostly positive: completely free, no ads, customizable. Plus a few negatives: slow-ish load times, lots of downtime, a large and unnecessary Miraheze announcement banner, limited MediaWiki extensions.

But suddenly, on November 16, my wiki went down. Apparently due to an unknown database error, the last 3 months of edits on 1200 wikis—including mine—were lost. The previous backups were from August 2022—before my wiki and any of its hundreds of articles were created. After two weeks of unclear (misleading) messaging, Miraheze admitted that there was little chance of data recovery on November 29. Additionally they had no plans for professional data recovery due to its estimated cost. A few days later, I opted to recreate my wiki on Miraheze from scratch. To make up for lost time, I wrote and rewrote many articles from the information in my local notes. I was making peace with losing the first version of my wiki and was able to improve many pages with more templates and wiki experience. I intended from then on to create my own local backups—but the 'download datadump' feature was disabled temporarily due to other maintenance. I later learned that the feature was re-enabled on December 13.

A mere five days after I could have created my first backup, the wiki went down again on December 18. The next day, Miraheze announced that—fortunately—they were able to recover the thought-to-be-unrecoverable backups from November. Quote: "We apologise for yet another downtime on these wikis but this incident has helped foment stronger backup procedures to prevent catastrophic disasters from occurring." They told me my old wiki would be merged with my latest edits after they transferred some data. But one week of downtime later, on December 26, they admitted that—and apparently this really happened—someone unplugged a hard drive while in use, and—for wikis alphabetically after "O"—their edits after November 25 were completely lost. No chance of recovery.

So I've been burned by Miraheze twice. It goes without saying that none of this is remotely acceptable—but the reality is you get what you pay for. No guarantees, no reliability, no accountability. If your wiki is worth more than $50 a year to you then there is no reason to choose Miraheze over a commercial web host. Why is Miraheze the only free wiki farm with no ads? Because you'd be naïve to run one and you'd have to be stupid to rely on one. I was stupid!

Miraheze has come a long way since earlier reviews, establishing a stronger content policy to deal with problematic hosted content/communities all while continually improving available features and platform stability.

While new wiki administrators may find a learning curve compared to other hosting options, I consider Miraheze the gold standard in ad-free/free-to-host wikifarms and have no reservations in recommending them to others.

Toxic users have plagued this website making people like what they like instead of having your own opinion and will even make sure you never have an unpopular opinion and harass you for it. They need to get rid of their stupid reception wikis now!

Surprised to see the negative reviews. In my experience Miraheze staff have been very kind and helpful to me and have guided me with creating my wiki and were especially useful with CSS/JS. I would certainly recommend this wonderful project if you don't want to spend time and money hosting your own wiki

Excellent service for no charge. I am very impressed by Miraheze and other than being slow at times (which to me is understandable for a project which relies on donations only) it has been exactly what my small start-up project needed.

This site is horrible, with their Celebtard page. They called nice VAs, like Grey, a Clebtard, all because of a minor thing, and that they think she was some
part of some KickVic movement, which is a movement that was made by a former Channel Awesome person, that defamed him for false Sexual Harassment allegations. I don’t recommend this site.

This network is toxic. It seems that the owners of this network have no problem letting people create pages to attack specific people on the internet. Harassing them in sites where these people are active. If they would allow this type of behavior, people would warn others against their network as it should now.
